Bucky watches from a distance as you hurl through the air and land right heel-first on the training dummy, knocking its head off and making it bounce off the floor with enough force to lodge itself into the ceiling. The room of SHIELD recruits clap and cheer, and when the dummy’s head flops back down you kick it like a hacky-sack at Maria Hill.

“Great demonstration,” Hill catches the head and tucks it under her arm. “Are you interested in teaching a course in hand-to-hand combat with a focus on aerial recovery? Legitimately?”

“Only if you promise not to fall in love with me.” You send a wink at her and then, as soon as you see Bucky’s bewildered face through the other side of the glass, you leap after him. He’s convinced you’re dumber than a bag of rocks, but you’re not deterred by it—especially not after Maria Hill’s validation. Puffing your chest, you skip forward, “Hey, Buck! I’m legit!”

Summary: You were with Steve in the Hydra Valkyrie when it crashed into the Arctic. 70 years later you wake up in an entirely new world and have to find out a few heartbreaking details from your past. It’s hard to find your bearings in the world that’s so different than the one you’re used to and just as you think you finally managed to find your way back, a certain someone unexpectedly returns. But he’s not the guy you used to love.

A/N: I don’t know how many parts this story will have but I’d say maybe about five? It won’t be identical to the movie, promise. I’ll skip the whole S.H.I.E.L.D drama and just focus on Buck.

I’m not sure if I like this part, hope you do though. Let’s see if it gets better lol.

Waking up has never been harder.

It’s not like when you usually slip out of an easy dream right back into reality just within the blink of an eye. No. This time it feels more like having to dig a tunnel with your bare hands through tons of snow in order to reach the surface and fill your lungs with fresh air. It feels like you’re only seconds away from choking even though you’re perfectly able to breathe.

Your eyelids feel heavier than usual and every single muscle in your body is as sore as if you haven’t made use of it in a long time. Adding to that, you have absolutely no idea what happened. There only seems to be useless mud where your brain should be. All you can remember is helping Steve hijack one of Hydra’s Valkyries, and then trying to sort out how to land it. But whatever happened after that is as big of a mystery as your current whereabouts.

Opening your eyes you’re welcomed by way too bright, synthetic light, making you frown. Your eyes burn like fire but you force them open in order to find out where the hell you are.

It doesn’t take too long for you to take in your surroundings since there simply isn’t that much of a surrounding to take in. You’re in a simple little room with mint green walls and friendly looking curtains you instantly feel the need to rip off.

Low music is playing in the background, which you only really notice because of the beautiful wooden record-player in one corner of the room. It has to be brand new since it’s not adding that low rustling sound to the music like your own record player always does. Bucky told you to get a new one ages ago but things got out of hand and music quickly became pretty irrelevant.

The stench was becoming familiar. When the guards had marched you through the gate it had been overwhelming, like hitting a concrete wall face first. You had no name for the scent. Nothing in your memory had provided even the slightest reference you could latch onto. 

It was a far cry from the crisp, fresh citrus and soothing lavender fragrances you had been accustomed to. Your downfall had been so quick, so complete, so final. Tears began to gather in your eyes. Easier to sleep, to avoid the utter wretchedness of the tail section. Turning to face the rusted metal wall, your eyelids softly closed, visions of airy light filling your head.
