sypnosis: you knew it was going to end. your relationship with dion was going to end sooner or later. so why did it have to hurt so bad? (meant to be viewed as romantic / ex - lovers)

"i believe we should end this, [name]." dion spoke in a soft and gentle tone. his tone was familiar to your ears, of course. he was your lover for months now and he only spoke to you in this way. yet, it seemed as if he was mocking this sweet tone by the harsh reality of his words.

your face dropped slightly. you knew dion was going to end this relationship sooner or later. but, you didn't want it to be this soon. you loved him too much, you wanted to stay with him forever. although, that would never be possible, of course. two men in a romantic relationship in the world of valisthea - one a prince, one the prince's loyal knight.

"of course.." you reply. your voice is barely a whisper - you're not even sure if dion can hear what you're saying. your heart is breaking away, piece by piece. "i just didn't think this was going to end so soon.."

dion's ears pick up your words and he sighs. he walks over to you and he takes your hands in his own. "i'm sorry, [name]. i truly am. but you know of our situation, you always have." he can't meet your eyes. the prince feels ever so guilty about his words, but he knows he can't take them back.

"couldn't we try to make this work?" you ask, your voice breaking. just like your heart. "don't you think we could try, at least?" a few tears started to well in your eyes, threatening to spill. you tried to look strong infront of dion, infront of the prince, infront of your lover. but, you couldn't right now. his words hurt you, more than anything.

dion sighed again. he wanted to agree with you, but reality wasn't always that easy. "[name], you know we can't. the situation with olivier being emperor, the war with odin, just my duties as prince.. it's all pilling up. i can't keep doing this. it'll hurt us more in the end if we keep going on like this." dion shook his head, moving one of his hands to place it on your cheek. he started to stroke it gently. "i'm sorry, [name]." he spoke quieter than before. the prince felt just as vulnerable as you did.

"of course.. i understand." you choke out. dion's touch is too much. you finally start to break down infront of him and show him how vulnerable you feel in that moment. tears stream down your face before you wrap your arms around dion's body, trying to hold him close, even if it was just one last time.

"i just.. i just wish i was a woman. maybe then our love wouldn't have to be be a secret." you mumble against the prince's chest, his blouse now stained with your tears. "this may sound selfish, but i wish you weren't a noble either. we could've actually been happy.. this wouldn't of had happened." more and more tears fell as you spoke to the point where no more words would come out, just sobs.

dion felt himself breaking down too. he wanted to cry, to kiss you, to say how he truly felt. but he knew he couldn't. the two of you had to end this relationship once and for all, no matter how hard it would be for the both of you. "maybe in another life, [name]. maybe then we'd be happy together." he whispered.

all you could remember was the good times with him. all the times you two sneaked around to be with eachother. all of the stolen kisses, hugs and sweet words. were they just going to be thrown away and disregarded now because you two were no longer an item? you couldn't bear that thought.

you wished things were different. you wished you had never fallen for the prince in the first place. his charm, his looks, his everything - you wished you didn't fall for him, but it was too late. you fell for him. you fell for him hard which is why it made everything worse.

"i wish i didn't fall for you.." you whisper, lifting your head up to meet dion's glossy eyes. "i wish i hadn't met you, then maybe this wouldn't be so unbearable." you continue, a few stray tears falling from your face where dion is quick to wipe them away. oh how much you hated that he was such a charmer. even in moments like these your heart still managed to flutter..

dion then leans in, pressing your lips against his for a final kiss. a final, bittersweet kiss. it left a bad taste in your mouth. yet, you lean forward too and kiss the prince back. dion tastes the salt of your tears on your lips. it's the first time he's every kissed you and tasted such a thing, but it would be the last too.

after a few moments, you reluctantly pull away, not wanting this to drag on any longer than it should. "i guess this is goodbye then, dion." you sigh, quickly wiping the tears from your face with the sleeve of your dress shirt. "i.. i hope you find happiness, your majesty." you spoke, adressing dion by one of his many titles.

the prince nods at you after hearing your words. "of course. i wish you the same, [name]." he smiles, but a pain is in his eyes. he doesn't want to let you go, and he knows you don't want to let him go either. "i shall be off then, i have duties to attend to." dion says before bowing at you, acting as if you were the true prince. he then takes your hand and kisses it quickly before walking away. he makes it short, trying not to hurt himself or you any more.

more tears flow down your face as you watch your now past lover leave. "why do the good things always have to end..?" you think to yourself, not knowing dion is thinking of the same question.

the air was thick and heavy, the moments of your intimacy with dion lingering in the air as the two of you pant heavily. dion holds you close, even though the two of you are sweaty and extremely warm. he just confides in you.

"thank you for that, [name]." the prince whispers, kissing your forehead as he snakes his arms around your waist to drag you in even closer. you chuckle hearing how thankful he is. "you don't have to thank me, we are lovers after all. this is normal, dion." you whisper back, resting your head on his chest. "even though we are lovers, i feel like i need to thank you. you've helped me relieve my stress today, and i'm glad." dion sighed, placing a kiss to your cheek this time. "plus, me thanking you just shows you how much i care for you, does it not?" the prince ruffles your hair with a small smile on his face.

the dim lights in the tent reflect off of your bodies and you see dion's smile. so naturally, you smile back. you absolutely love how caring dion was in private and off of the battle field. he truly made you weak in the knees, and he always made you feel butterflies in your stomach.

you lean in even closer to dion and kiss his lips, sweetly and tenderly. it wasn't filled with the same intense passion and heat as it was a few minutes prior. it was just filled with an innocent love that the two men shared for eachother.

once the kiss ends, the two men pull away and stay close to eachother on the bed still. their naked bodies touching, and their gazes on eachother. you look at dion with so much love, and he looks at you the same. yet, it was almost as if the two of you always competed to see who loved who the most.

"i love you." you speak softly, not wanting anyone else to hear this exchange, even though nobody would dare step into the prince's private tent this late. "as do i. i love you too, [name]." dion responds, sharing the same soft tone that you spoke with.

"i am truly glad we could spend tonight together." the prince starts, and you listen. you always listened to him, because your ears never wanted to listen to anything else. "life has just been so stressful, all of my duties as prince and bahamut.. it piles up and takes a toll on me, even if i do not show it." he sighs, a frown tugging at his lips, but he's still glad you're listening.

you stroke dion's blonde hair gently, humming along to what he has to say. "well, you have put up with a lot. you are very strong, my prince." you say, trying to reassure the man who was laying next to you. dion sighs again, still feeling affected by all of his duties. you understand, being in his position must be tough - your own family using you for your powers in war. it's cruel, and dion knew it all too well.

"i guess i am strong, but that's all people value me for." dion mumbles, leaning in to your touch, your warmth. "they don't chose to think about what the prince feels.. ever since that traitor walked into my father's life, everything has gone downhill." he shook his head, acting as if that would help him get his mind off of things. it wouldn't. of course it wouldn't.

for a few moments, you lay in the bed with dion in silence. it's not a bad, awkward silence. it's a comforting one that lets dion know you're listening. "dion..." you start, not knowing how to finish your sentence. instead, you just press a kiss to dion's lips yet again, wanting him to know that you care. luckily, he understood the message like he always did.

"i'll always be here for you, dion." you whisper against the prince's lips as you part from the kiss. he nods in response, his frown ripped away from his face, returning to a smile. "no matter what you do, or what happens, i'll always be here for you. i love you." you reassure dion, and he nods again, still pressing your bare body against his. "i love you too. i know i can count on you no matter what." he replies back, not wanting to let go of you. he was always going to stick by you, no matter what. he wasn't going to go back on his words now.

and then the two of you layed together for the rest of the night, whispering sweet nothings into eachother's ears and stealing kisses. oh how you both loved the moments after..
