Okay, but non-romantic "soulmates", characters who shape and influence each other, who *need* each other, who may love or hate the other, but it doesn't matter because they need each other, whose story cannot be told alone, those are the best characters.
soulmates but not in a soft romantic way soulmates in a destined to change each other for better or for worse, cannot be who they are without each other, unstoppable together but they’re also the only ones who can defeat each other, equals, existences undeniably tied to each other way

a depressed character that never smiles and always has blank, black, dreary eyes.
but their eyes light up with small heart highlights when they see their love interest♡♡♡♡
me when the character trope where they want to belong to a place they know they can't, either because the people apart of the place do not accept them and/or because they are genuinely unable to bring themselves to change to fit in

im an absolute fan of when characters have their own twisted perceptions of love. like holy shit that guy thinks inflicting pain is affection! woah this silly man believes love is a form of ownership! give me more.
Cats and dogs ship dynamics are fun, but consider this: Mischievous Cat vs Stern Guard Dog. Hyperactive Orange Cat vs Tired Old Dog. Dumbass Cat Vs Smart Dog. There's so many variety, and yet the one I see most are Golden Retriever vs Black Cat.
