Yesterday I visited the Maretarium Aquarium, an aquarium in Kotka, Finland! Here are some pictures :)

A school of European smelt swim near the surface of a rocky aquarium environment. Some vendaces can be seen swimming lower in the water column.

A northern pike and a European carp are in view. The pike is floating still near the turquoise wall of an aquarium. The carp is somewhat turned to the camera, swimming towards it. The aquarium environment has driftwood and rubble.

A young European eel peeks out from among sand and gravel. It’s in its yellow eel phase, which is the phase when eels enter inland waters, but it is very small.

A European flounder and a turbot camouflage in sand. The European flounder is on the left, distinguished by its more oblong shape, meanwhile the turbot is on the right, distinguished by its rounder shape. Both fish are disguised in their sand-bottomed environment.

Three European perches swim to the right, two of them are ordinary with darker and lighter green body colours and red fin colour, meanwhile one of them appears to be greyscale, lacking these pigments. One more perch is hiding behind driftwood.

All the tanks and fish were very beautiful indeed! But the showstopper was definitely the Baltic Sea tank, which holds 680 000 liters of water. It’s the single biggest tank in all of Finland, it is seven meters deep, it gets its water from the Baltic right next to Maretarium, and it houses sturgeons, salmon, trout, perches, zanders, roaches… the list goes on.

A leucistic Siberian sturgeon, a European perch and a rainbow trout swim in the foreground. A large rock and several other fish can be seen in the back.

Several fish are viewed from below so that some of the surface of the water is seen. The species include Atlantic salmon, Siberian sturgeon, European perch, common rudd, and rainbow trout.

A leucistic Siberian sturgeon and a darker Russian sturgeon (diamond sturgeon) are seen on the rock-filled bottom of the aquarium. Several other fish swim by, including a European perch and rainbow trout.
