I don’t talk about kpop on tumblr because I see this as a kpop free zone, I’m a big kpop fan but I like that my tumblr is removed from all that, I keep it restricted to silly edits on TikTok and my Spotify and when I have the time I will watch my faves’ shows on YouTube.

But I have to say I’m so upset about the Taeil situation. Not because I’m a huge Taeil fan, in fact, I’m a casual NCT listener and I didn’t even know who he was two days ago, but the way in which people are talking about it online is really distressing me.

I hate the way critical thinking and media literacy skills seem to have vanished from the online space because the way so many people are speculating and acting as if their speculation is literal fact is so irresponsible and harmful to the actual real victim. When you make up rumours/spread them what you are doing is muddying the waters, making it impossible to separate the fact from the fiction, and in so doing you obstruct the truth and hurt the victim.

People will literally read a comment or a tweet from a random person who pulls something out of their ass and believe it as fact and repeat it, creating this ripple effect that could have very damaging, real world consequences.

Believe and support the victim. Read credible news sources. Withdraw all support from the perpetrator. Please think before posting on social media.
