The urge hits you as you and Chaewon are putting groceries away. You’re sure your girlfriend is talking about something important, but all you can do is watch her, her small frame as she stands on the step stool to put away various spices in your cabinet.

“Chae-chae,” you start shyly, the use of her moniker immediately grabbing her attention.
“Hm?”
You feel heat rising in your cheeks now that you have your girlfriend’s full attention, her big bright eyes on you.
“Can I… get a hug?” you ask.
Chaewon’s eyes light up as she opens her arms to embrace you.
“Of course you can!” She jumps down from the plastic stool and pulls you into her arms.
Chaewon is shorter than you, but her embrace swallows you whole, encapsulates you in her warmth and her floral perfume. You shut your eyes and sink into the hug as you nuzzle against your girlfriend’s neck.
“You don’t have to ask me for hugs, honey.”
“I know, but you know how I am. It’s… it’s hard.”
“I know, honey. It’s hard, but you’re trying your best. I’ll come hug you and you can come get me for hugs whenever you’re ready, ‘kay?”
You hum, eyes still shut. Chaewon rubs your back, you can feel the soft warmth of her skin through your clothes.
“I love you,” Chaewon whispers. You’re still not used to hearing someone say that and mean it.
It’s still a little hard for you to say back, but it doesn’t feel scary to say like it did in your previous relationships. With Chaewon, it feels right. It feels safe.
You feel safe.
“I love you, too.”
