Early in today's episode of Helluva Boss (s2e09 "Apology Tour") Verosika Mayday is throwing a party with Stolas, the most recent person her ex hurt, as the guest of honor. She walks into the living room, sees Stolas there, and walks over to check in on him, like a good host does, no matter how drunk.

And I had to stop myself from alt-tabbing and searching to see if they'd recast the part, because the voice that came out was not Verosika Mayday's. It didn't sound like a succubus at all. It sounded like a tired, tipsy adult woman, probably pushing 40 and sad and a little tired, and concerned for the person she was talking to.

I mean come on, Verosika's not a main character but she's been in several episodes by now. We've heard her on stage, twice, we've heard her arguing with Blitz twice before this point, we've heard her talking to her crew, off-stage. We know what she sounds like. Drunk or nearly-sober, seductive or mocking or professional or angry, singing or speaking, she has a very consistent voice.

And this new-sounding voice actress listens to Stolas try to change the subject with a funny-sad unrelated story, encourages him to open up about his feelings, and then, when she turns to get him a slice of rage-cake, she's "Verosika Mayday" again. The enraged, drunk version we've heard before, and for almost the entire rest of the party she's "Verosika Mayday," with only one more slip into this "new" version of her that I caught, right before Stolas' big musical number.

And if Cristina Vee and whoever was voice-directing her did this on purpose, I'm awe-struck. Because it changes the whole character. It changes the whole way we should be seeing the succubuses in this show. Are succubusses voice-coached from childhood to Sound Sexy? To never ever let anyone, prey species or not, hear their natural voices? How many people have heard Verosika Mayday's real voice, when she isn't code-switched into sounding at least slightly perma-horny? Has anybody heard her real birth voice at all since childhood? Has Blitz?

I sincerely hope this was on-purpose, not a recording-booth error, because it's amazing world-building, and the "new" voice of Verosika slipped through at just the right time. Because if this was on purpose, I am even more in awe of Cristina Vee.

As kid, i thought that the narrators in EAH was the coolest thing EVER. Like, they talk with each other? No they actually MARRIED?! And they have a daughter who is also a narrator?! And one of the characters can TALK with them?! SO COOL
