the “how is orv not a bl” line is actually really interesting to me because the way joongdok is written in orv kinda reminds me of old mangas (specifically shounen) from the 80s-90s where because of ~the times~ the story is centered on these action-filled, dramatic narrative arcs but had loads and loads of hints between the lines. the leads (or side characters) have stifling Homoerotic Tension and, often, really fucking explosive soap opera storylines

You know, the we’re gonna divorce fight and make it everyone else’s problem arcs (This is often an arc involving conflicting morals and/or a blackening of 1/2 of the pair)?

The we’re not explicitly a canon pair but we’re also not not together

The are we gonna fuck fight or battle to the death dynamic

The yeah we could be together but at this point to boil down what we have to a simple relationship is just not enough of a summary of our shared history

The ambiguous description of being one soul, one pair, partners, companions, one and only, etc. but never actually saying they’re romantically together

A lot of titles before had that undefined devotion between characters, where everyone in-world just accepts that yeah those two would damn the world and us for each other type of crazy

I guess that’s why i really love joongdok too. They bring that nostalgic, show-don’t-tell approach to love and absolute batshit insane devotion without having to be tagged as BL

(I have to say however, in the interest of avoiding misunderstandings, that I am not against BL works. I simply find this type of storytelling interesting and, again, nostalgic.)
