Belphegorâs Spells in 15x01
Belphegor, as well as being a sassy Dean fan-boy, and a twisted one at that (one who digs Deanâs painful past as a torturer/demon in Hell) is also a pretty damn good spell-worker, right?
As ever in SPN, spell ingredients are often, especially since the particularly blatant Angel Fall spell of 8x23 Sacrifice, connected to the Destiel subtext of the show: heart of a Nephilim - a product of angel/ human congress; Cupidâs Bow - used to make two dudes fall in love; grace [aka spunk] of an angel, and not just any angel - but specifically Castiel himself.Â
Belphegor, who thinks Dean is âgorgeousâ and who checks out a LOT of dudes during his speech about how people on earth are a lot more attractive than in ye olden days, has some interesting spell ingredients of his own:
His first spell involves grave dirt and the blood of an angel (specifically Castielâs blood):

Dean is in the background shot of this spell, which has so many resonances for the Dean/ Cas relationship. Cas raising Dean from grave dirt (from death, from Hell) - remember the shot of Dean crawling from his own grave in 4x01?
That famous line of Casâ from 7x21 Reading is Fundamental: âAlways happy to bleed for the Winchestersâ, which is particularly recalled by Casâ magnificent eye-roll as he ponies up the blood here in 5x01, despite suffering because of having to watch his beloved dead sonâs corpse âdefiledâ by this new, irritating, demon.
And the blood is symbolic of Castielâs sacrifice for the Winchesters, his incredible journey from Heavenâs soldier to a renegade with a human (and Nephilim) adopted family whom he loves.
The spell banishes ghosts - subtextually the implication is that Castielâs love and devotion (his willingness to offer his blood for the Winchesters/ Dean) has the power to banish the things which haunt them/ Dean.
Belphegorâs next spell involves salt and a human heart, and he performs it in the company of Dean:

We know the expression, ârubbing salt in the woundâ - well the subtext of this spell is about Deanâs heart in pain. He bickers with Cas during the episode, and things are clearly not OK between them. Jack and Maryâs deaths have hurt Dean and Cas deeply and, despite their continuing love for one another, come between them.Â
This spell temporarily contains ghosts behind a barrier. So that suggests repression.
Take the two spells together, one involving Cas and one involving Dean, and our sassy new queer-coded demon performs one spell which banishes ghosts and one which temporarily traps them.Â
Two choices - release the ghosts of the past or repress them.Â
One involves Castielâs willing sacrifice/ devotion.
One involves rubbing salt into Deanâs heart.
In the subtext, these spells, performed by a queer-coded trickster figure (aka a truth-teller) are concerned with the (repressed) love between Dean and Cas and the incredible power/ potential for its resurrection. Â

So Iâm updating every background picture on every social media platform and electronic device I have.Â
Alright friendos, buckle in, cuz Iâm about to crack the âwe are.â I know youâve all been seeing the arguments over whether it was romantic or platonic, or, as proxy, whether it was referring to deancas only or all tfw. Let me break down the dialogue a bit, first from the grammatical perspective and then the thematic perspective.

15Ă01 Destiel meta
âYou okay?â
âYes but, uh..â
âGoodâ
Okay so we can all agree this was totally a dick move. But why does it hurt so much to have Dean saying that to Cas?
For that Iâm gonna do a little bit of a travel through some of Castielâs more significant moments of genuine emotional vulnerability where he actually talks about it.
"You misunderstand me, Dean. It's not like you think, I was praying that you would choose to save the town."
[...]
"I'll tell you something if you promise not tell another soul. I'm not a hammer, as you say. I have questions, I have doubts. I don't know what is right and what is wrong anymore, whether you passed or failed here, but in the coming months you will have more decisions to make. I... don't envy the weight that's on your shoulders Dean, I truly don't."
It's the Great Pumpkin, Sam Winchester, 04Ă07
âWhy are you here, Cas?â
âWeâve been through much together, you and I just wanted to say, Iâm sorry it ended like this.â
Lucifer Rising, 04Ă22
âIt sounds so simple when you say it like that. Where were you when I needed to hear it?â
"I was there, where were you?"
The man who would be King, 06Ă20
For the record, this whole chapter is a moment of emotional vulnerability for Cas, but considering that in most of it he was talking to God, and there was no response, I think that was mostly just talking alone. I chose scenes where he is showing vulnerable to someone else.
âI deserved to die. Now I canât possibly fix it, so why did I even walk out of that river?
The Born-Again Identity, 07Ă17
âAnd, at best, I die trying to fix my own stupid mistake. Or⌠I donât die- Iâm brought back again. I see now. Itâs a punishment resurrection. Itâs worse every time.â
Survival of the Fittest, 07Ă23
âNothing you could have done would have saved me because I didnât want to be saved.â
âThe hell youâre talking about?â
âItâs where I belonged. I needed to do penance for the things I did on Earth and in heaven, I didnât deserve to be out, and I saw that clearly when I was there. I planed to stay all alongâ
A Little Slice lf Kevin, 08Ă07
âBecause if I see what heavenâs become, what I made of it, Iâm afraid I might kill myself.â
Hunter Heroici, 08Ă08
âEveryone you know, everyone you love. They could be long dead. Everyone except me. Iâm the one whoâll have to watch you murder the world. So if thereâs even a small chance that we can save you? I wonât let you walk out of this room.â
The Prisoner, 10Ă22
Now a little parenthesis in why I consider this emotional vulnerability, because according to a friend itâs not so clear why I say it is.. Because he wants to save Dean for him, yes, but also for himself. Itâs not only that Castiel knows what Dean will do is wrong, or that he knows the true Dean would hate what he is becoming, itâs that he doesnât want to live that. Heâs saying I would still be here by your side, and I would have to watch you do this. Please think of what this will do to me.
By talking about himself, Cas is showing the vulnerability of saying this will fuck me up.
âDean I just, keep failing. Again and again. When you were taken I searched for months and I couldnât find you, and then Kelly escaped on my watch and I couldnât find her and I just wanted⌠I needed to come back here with a win for you. For myself.â
The Future, 12Ă19
And now I want you to think what all of these scenes have in common. Yeah, heâs talking to Dean. Maybe Dean isnât the only one in the room always, but these lines that are so powerful and so full of feelings of regret, pain, fear and anger on himself were all directed to Dean. This is not saying that Cas doesnât have emotional scenes with other people, he has plenty with Sam and Jack and those are beautiful too, but they are mostly about Sam and Jack, or maybe about how they are all a family, or maybe even showing mutual support, but they are not like this.
Now, I could rant for hours about why Cas only opens up for like this for Dean, but I the simplified version is that 1) Dean was the one pressuring to talk in a lot of these ones, and he was the only one that pressured him to talk about it, and 2) Dean knows what is like to be expected to be a soldier with no emotions, because he had to be that for John.
Their emotional constipation doesnât come from nowhere. Cas was an angel, they arenât supposed to feel, and yet he did. And Dean believes he has to be this strong figure Sam and everyone can lean on, someone whoâs above all that âchick-flick bullshitâ.
Cas knows that Dean understands the strong sense of responsibility and the reluctance to you know, show they have feelings. Dean âIâm allergic to talk about my feelingsâ Winchester has pushed him to talk about his.
So of course, when Dean asked Cas if he was okay, Cas was so relieved that maybe Dean wouldnât remain angry and him and they would be comfortable with each other again and the could talk, because Cas needs to talk. He has been through so much the last few days, he wants to talk about. And the only person he knows how to talk about those things is Dean.
But then just walked away, and Cas is being forced to bottle up those feelings. And I guess that you all know what happens when the Winchester decide to bottle up feelings.
Yeah, that moment when Jensen said Cas is going away, we are having a pretty awful break-up, again. Or, as @verobatto-angelxhunter calls it, a Divorce (if you havenât read her destiel metas what are you even doing with your life?)
So yeah, Iâm dying over here.
Just finishing the Office (yes Iâm very late), but I had to reblog Angela and Dwight. Of course I also love Pam and Jim, but Dwangela is my favorite ship in this show đ â¤ď¸
