Since HELLPIERCERS is a tactics game with lots of weird movement mechanics and targetting rules, not to mention the swarms, we've brought on the one and only @raul-volp2 to illustrate these in his signature style. I love what he's done with the vibe here so much, sort of an SNES version of the hyper horror nightmares @jnbutlerart and @leafie-draws are bringing.

Best of all, when we're done, you'll have a whole set of these tiles and sprites to use in VTT and other places. Raul's an absolute king and I can't wait to see what else we do.

Tenra Bansho Zero

This game of high octane action, intrigue, honour and all-around kickassery is a beast of a thing. Some of its mechanics might feel the weight of its age, but I was surprised by the modernity of so many of its dynamics. It's not a simple game, and, some might argue, it's a bit broken here and there, but its mood and tone have always brought the table together in just enjoying it. The fascinating setting in a world inspired by feudal Japan, but with many sci-fi trappings, is vast and vibrant, detailing only a few of its areas, while giving just hints about the rest, but the timeline is what makes the difference. You can feel the world's history behind the characters and the situation, giving context to players and GMs alike. Its "every defense is a counterattack" system, and the wonderful Emotion Matrix (that determines the first impression you get when you meet a new, relevant character, is one of the most effective storytelling tools I've seen in a rpg, yet) really bring out the game's animesque mood, while the "no-self phase" where you manage your character motivations and the karma they accrued, gives it a mystical feeling that only highlights further its tone.

Questo gioco di azione sfrenata, intrighi, onore e generale spaccaculaggine è un piccolo mostro. Mentre alcune meccaniche risentono un po' della sua età, mi ha sorpreso quanto moderne siano molte sue dinamiche. Non è un gioco semplice ed alcuni potrebbero giustamente asserire che è un po' rotto, ma ha un tono e spirito tali che ha sempre portato i tavoli sulla stessa lunghezza d'onda, facendoli semplicemente divertire. La sua incantevole ambientazione ispirata al Giappone feudale, ma con anche elementi fantascientifici, è vasta e vibrante. Solo alcune aree vengono dettagliate, dando giusto delle tracce sul resto del mondo, ma quello che fa la differenza è la sua cronologia. Si riesce a sentire la storia del mondo dietro ogni personaggio e situazione, dando contesto tanto ai giocatori quanto al master. Il suo sistema per cui "ogni difesa è un contrattacco" e la sua meravigliosa Matrice delle Emozioni (che definisce la prima impressione di quando vengono introdotti nuovi personaggi rilevanti ed è uno degli strumenti narrativi più efficaci che abbia visto finora) tirano davvero fuori il suo spirito "animesco", mentre la "fase di non-io" in cui si gestiscono le motivazioni e il karma accumulato dai personaggi, gli conferisce un tono mistico che lo evidenzia ulteriormente.

This self-described disruption, subversion or even profanity against D&D B/X really gets just to the point. It cleverly finds a quick and dirty system that minimises sheet bookkeeping, that also gives an entertaining depth to conflicts. Because that's what BX is really about, isn't it? The game leaves everything else to freeform play, and, as it happened with the previously mentioned In the Time of Monsters, I'm generally appreciating the split between combat and the rest of the narrative. The bestiary is also filled with creatures that are fun to run, with hooks baked into their descriptions, but there's a tendency all over the game to make fun of itself, that really entertained me. What really got me, in addition to the fluid simplicity of this game, is how easy it is to hack videogames into it. I tried a couple, and it was really a breeze, much to the satisfaction of the other players as well. The scenes flowed easily, and combat, with its lethality spiking now and then, keeps up the tension that it should.

Questa autodefinitasi perturbazione, sovversione o persino profanazione di D&D B/X va veramente dritta al punto. Arriva astutamente a un sistema facile e rapido che riduce la contabilità di scheda, dando nel contempo un'interessante profondità ai conflitti. Perché in fondo è tutto lì il punto di BX, no? Questo gioco lascia tutto il resto alla narrativa libera e, come per In the Time of Monsters recensito in precedenza, tendo ad apprezzare questo tipo di separazione fra il combattimento e il resto della narrativa. Il bestiario, fra l'altro, è pieno di creature divertenti da gestire e dalle ispiranti descrizioni. Anche la tendenza generale del gioco a prendersi in giro da solo mi ha veramente intrattenuto. Quello che mi ha veramente colpito, oltre alla scorrevole semplicità del gioco, è stata la facilità con cui ci si possono convertire videogiochi. Ho provato con un paio, mettendoci veramente un attimo e dando anche soddisfazione agli altri giocatori. Le varie scene sono scorse fluidamente e il combattimento, con la sua letalità che spunta improvvisamente, ha mantenuto alta la tensione come dovrebbe essere.
