When Col. Douglas Mortimer Says 'I Reached Almost 50 Years Of Age With My System, Not Many Men Last Long
When Col. Douglas Mortimer says 'I reached almost 50 years of age with my system, not many men last long in these parts. How long do you expect to last?' so you start researching about life expectancies đ:
Okay so basically, based on this statement (or quote or whatever) I decided to do some random research about life expectancy, and how long Mortimer would've been expected to live at birth. So like, verify
1. If, yes, men do not last long at this point of time, and him reaching almost 50 years of age is wow
2. How long can Manco (the 'you' of the dialogue) expect to last?
So life expectancy is the average period that a person may expect to live, and it varies from decade to decade. For example, according to the cdc's website, the life expectancy at birth for men in the US, in 2021, is 73.5 years. So if mortality patterns stay the same, you'll die around 73.5 years. I think.
Anyways, so there's lots of data about life expectancy and stuff, but this one is focused on Mortimer from 'For A Few Dollars More' aaaaaand unfortunately the movie does not give a clear date as to when the action takes place. Also, the data for life expectancy during the 19th century... it's confusing.
So the movie is a western right, so it's gotta take place around the 19th century or something. It features trains (which appear like, after the 60s?) and we see Mortimer flipping through the 'El Paso Tribune', papers that are dated back to june 1875 (or 1873 or even 1879, numbers are hard to read).
Okay so they've got to be around late 70s, and Mortimer mentions his age, so that would mean that he was born in the 20s. 'Almost fifty years of age' would mean that he is somewhere in his late forties? So that brings his birth somewhere between the late 20s and very early 30s.
So what was the life expectancy then? Well according to the ncbi's website, taking in all the info for life expectancy for white men between the 20s and 30s, and getting the average... that's around 40,6 years. Probably way less. Since, you know. There were wars. And stuff.
This whole thing clarifies (in my opinion) the first and second part of Mortimer's statement, so the whole 'I reached almost fifty years of age with my system, not many men last long in these parts', as he has successfully outlived the life expectancy.
That brings us to part 3! Which is 'how long do you expect to last?'.
So that's the tricky part. Kind of. Because the problem is... I have no idea how old Manco (Clint Eastwood's character) is supposed to be. However, we see Mortimer call Manco 'boy', and Mortimer is supposed to be in his late forties, so we can assume, based on the nickname and on Clint Eastwood's age at the time of the movie's release, that Manco is more or less thirty-five years old, or is in his thirties.
Okay, so that means that he would've been born somewhere between the 30s and 40s. And so the life expectancy at birth is around 41 years... yeah.
Life expectancy as a whole is only an estimate, if your country's life expectancy is 81 that does not mean you'll necessarily die at 81 years old, but this is just... fun activity for me.
So Mortimer's life expectancy was around 40,6 years -he outlived it, congrats-, and Manco can reply with 'oh yeah my life expectancy is up to 41 years' -even if that's kind of a weird reply-. Yay.

Why did they translate the name 'sentenza' ('judgement') to 'angel eyes' though, like who took a look at lee van cleef's character and went 'ah yes, angel eyes'
Things the fandom often forgets about Jason Grace:
His mother abandoned him at 2 and he survived training with the wolf goddess Lupa at 3
He isn't some dumbass bro himbo like a lot of people think, he's actually really smart and knows a lot of things
He wears glasses and loses them a lot
He's one of the kindest demigods in both camps
He defeated the titan Krios with his bare f*cking hands
AND he killed the trojan sea monster
He isn't the "roman percy", and he's not some knockoff protagonist
He isn't trying to replace or compete with Percy
Percy and Jason actually hardly know each other and there really isn't much of a bromance there like people think
He toppled the black throne of Kronos and earned his position as praetor
He was literally praetor
Which led to him hardening a bit and put a lot of pressure on him to be a perfect leader
He once jumped into the grand canyon to save a girl he really didn't know that well, with no regard to the fact that he would literally die
HE LITERALLY DIDNT KNOW HE COULD FLY
He isn't boring, it's just that when we meet him in TLH we literally don't know him (and he doesn't either lmfao), we don't have the history and bond we do with Percy
He has a big smile and deep laugh
Jason didn't replace Percy at CHB, people were actually apprehensive of him whereas CJ pretty much DID replace Jason with Percy (treating him as a powerful leader and electing him praetor)
He was literally a child soldier and probably has a lot of issues because of this
He used to squint a lot before he got his glasses
People probably thought he was glaring or judging them, but in actuality he just couldn't f*cking SEE
He's actually a big softie and gives such golden retriever vibes
Canonically handsome
People think he's too perfect but that's because he had to be. He had so much pressure on him to be perfect all the time
He has a calm and steady voice, and even when he's yelling/speaking intensely, it's still steady and strong
TLDR; Jason is literally my fav and Jason hate will not be tolerated here thank you đ«¶
i love paintings that look as if they have ghosts in them
Ok so I do not know how to articulate this, but something about Mortimer asking Manco to join him in his revenge (even if he didn't know it was a revenge) and the whole discussion they had actually, gets me like yf8tfcctftfcf8x6fx6f.
So basically, right, at this point of the movie, we've seen Mortimer, we've seen Manco, we know who they are, we know they want to get Indio. And then badabim badaboum, guess what, they meet and they're like that spiderman meme.
And Mortimer says that during a hunt, two hunters going after the same prey risk shooting at each other. That they don't want to shoot at each other, so they should become partners.
Now, the search for Indio is motivated by different reasons. Mortimer wants to get the guy for the harm he caused his sister. Manco just wants money.
But look. Vengeance, revenge, it's like, this big movie thing, the whole 'lone man on a quest to avenge his relative', it's very much something you expect to be, well, a lone quest. One person against the whole world. John Wick. You know?
But Mortimer? Mortimer doesn't go alone. Mortimer's probably been working alone for a while now, but he suggests a partnership.
And that just???? Oh my????
Because he didn't have to. I mean, I know Manco probably really wants the money and retiring, but it's not like there's no way around this issue, and anyways, the movie is built the way it is, it, wants Manco and Mortimer to be partners. And I don't know. Something about two guys that know nothing about each other, but then they become partners and Manco assists Mortimer at the end, letting him have his revenge, it's very satisfying.
FUCK WAIT GUYS
au where neilâs getting confessed to a lot right ??? and like heâs a polite baby?? right??? and the nicest person ever and he feels bad just saying no becuz he doesn'tâ really have a reason beyond just ⊠not liking themâŠ
anyway
so he feels guilty even tho he shouldnât
and he wants the confessions to s t o p
so eventually he makes up a boyfriend (with the help of the poets who dont call themselves the poets yet)
and like he spreads it around that he has a long distance bf who goes somewhere else
and charlie adds that heâs super fit because of course he does
and knox says heâs a poet, because he thinks its romantic
and meeks says heâs got blue eyes because pitts <3 (according to the 43985493 pics i just looked up of his actor at least)
and pitts says heâs shy and thats why neil wonât ask him to help neil âproveâ his existence
and cameron says heâs blond (in a fit of panic, after spotting stick, when cornered and asked about his friends secret bf)
anyway the poets just have fun with it
and they make this mystery perfect bf for neil and neilâs like âdamn i wish someone like that actually existed </3
now theres two ways i want this to go
1. todd transfers the next year, everyone recognizes him, he thinks theyre mistaking him for someone else because he knows no neilâs and has no boyfriend, he escapes, meets neil, neil now has to convince him to be his fake boyfriend (bonus points if neilâs so panicky he skips the âfakeâ part and accidently asks todd out) (and toddâs like w h a t)Â
2. one day neil is approached by an upperclassman, asking him how long heâs been dating his little brother
the second one is really funny because of the no doubt âoh fuckâ look that neil will get
and also becuz he cant admit he LIED now - especially when jeff talks about how heâs happy for him and todd and hopes that by meeting neil he can take the first step to forming a relationship with his little brother since the two arenât close
this could lead to two things
neil (and the poets ofc) trying to help jeff without letting todd know that welton and jeff think heâs dating neil, and without jeff knowing heâs not dating todd (cameron: wouldnât it be easier to just coem clean to these 2 people? / charlie: you have no sense of drama and im breaking up with you / cameron: weâre not dating / charlie: yeah because you have no sense of drama)
neil desperately searching for a todd anderson and trying to fill him in on everything and trying to convince him this isnt a weird ass prank
âhi todd anderson?â
âum ye-yeah?â
âheysothisissuperweirdbutitoldeveryoneiwasdatingthismakebeliefguybecauseifeltbadforturningthemdownandlikeijustrandomlymadehimtobekindalikemydreamguywithoutreferencebutthensomeoneapproachedmeaskingmehowlongivebeendatinghisyoungerbrotherandnowineedyoutopretendtobemyboyfriendpLEASEâ
âum whatâ
(meeks: also heâs not insane, i swear // charlie: well-)
//
back to the first and todd only agrees because he is a very shy and very anxious person and he would also lie to get out of that awkward situation
yeah
