Tw: Very casual mention of death, Hell as a place (mentioned), my awful describing of architecture

-

Jesse took a careful step out of the elevator as if testing the ground. She looked around, eyes scanning her surroundings, but finding nothing alarming.

Just a simple gravel path, leading to god knows where.

The tiny stones crunched under her boots as she made her way across the forest. The trees surrounded the path, like a steel wall.

With no way to break through.

And so she kept walking and walking until she somehow found herself facing an entrance to a cave.

It was deep, and by that I mean there was absolutely no way to see its other side.

Jesse took out her phone and turned the flashlight on.

A faint glow illuminated the void in front of her. It wasn’t a lot, but it’d have to suffice.

She crossed the metaphorical threshold, behind which the darkness began, and stumbled on the uneven floor.

She steadied herself, and carefully descended further.

Jesse pointed her phone at the wall closest to her and saw ‘The Church OF–’ with the last word being scratched out by something with huge claws, that apparently wasn’t happy with whatever being the religion was dedicated to.

Well, one thing was for sure, and it was the fact that–judging from all the stuff that was lined up next to the wall, including an altar–the entity was greatly cherished by many.

On the wall on the right of the room cave was a tapestry.

It hung about two, no, three meters up and reached the ground. On its surface, there was a depiction of a sunrise over the mountains, and a silvery river that wound around the hills like a ribbon made of stardust.

Jesse approached it, and hastily slid her index finger across its rough surface.

She retracted her hand as soon as the unnaturally loud 'click' echoed through the chamber.

Huh, strange, she thought

She carefully pushed the fabric aside, revealing a small door made of red wood.

That wasn't here before— wait, 'before'?

She just shrugged, and cautiously grabbed the handle. Having caused no reaction, she pressed on it, opening the door.

The tunnel behind it was nothing like what she expected; it was tiny, and despite her being 5'4" she'd have to crawl to fit through.

Eh, raz kozie śmierć, she said to herself

Jesse got on her knees, and slowly crawled into the small opening.

No matter how far she went, the tunnel seemed to never end, and it was getting more and more claustrophobic with every second she spent there.

"Fuck you and your tunnels" she snarled, coughing from the dust

Then, she heard a loud creak, like something old was opened.

She stilled.

The noise didn't continue.

She took a few more 'steps' and realized she was staring into a deep, endless pit, just inches from falling into it.

Jesse narrowed her eyes, trying to make out anything down there.

Nothing,

Well, at least not that she could see.

She heard a crack, felt the ground beneath her shift, and suddenly found herself falling down the hole.

Her mind was screaming at her, to grab something, anything, but there was no use. The walls were unnaturally smooth and barren, providing no help in her situation.

She could of course spread her arms and legs out, in hopes of stopping the fall, but the most probable income was that she would—in the best case scenario—scrape her skin off, or—in the worst—break something.

Suddenly, the air around her seemed to shake—ha, ironic, isn't it?—and soon after she found herself lying on some uneven surface, unscathed.

"What the hell…" she whispered

Jesse shakily got up to her legs. There were no walls around her, at least not that she could see. The whole place was coated in darkness so dense you could cut it with a butter knife and put it on your sandwich. Not that it would taste like anything, except maybe dust.

There was nothing around her, sans the flat stone ground she stood on.

She felt something unexplainable, like a force pulling her forward, which soon led her to a dilapidated stone arch that appeared to be glowing.

Jesse slowly edged closer to it and examined the weird structure. It was made of stone blocks, stacked one on top of another, and was about three meters tall. She carefully placed her hand on its coarse surface and flinched at the cold that seemed to go through her.

The arch came to life, a bright white flame igniting in the center of it.

Jesse reached out with her hand to touch the flame, and to her surprise, it didn’t burn. It wasn't even hot.

She ignored the slight tingling in her hand and mechanically came closer to the flame. The nearer she was, the bigger the flame got.

As soon as she entered it, the archway exploded in white light, engulfing her, and the surroundings completely.

Jesse woke up in a spacious room. The walls were made of black bricks, just like the floor, and there were ripped red curtains covering the pane-less windows,

She tried to move from the uncomfortable position she was in but quickly found herself unable due to the fact that she was tied to a chair.

And not just any chair, one of those fancy castle ones. It was painted black, with red cushions, the shade matching the curtains and the rug beneath it.

She tugged at the rope binding her hands, but to no avail. Perfect, just perfect, she thought

She grabbed her necklace with her teeth and pulled.

The delicate chain ripped almost immediately, nevertheless leaving a reddened, painful line on her neck. Something to worry about later. She leaned forward, the pendant still in her mouth, pressing its sharp edge to the rope. Slowly but surely, it gave in, freeing her right hand.

She grabbed the pendant, but in her hurry, it slipped from her sweaty fingers and landed on the floor with a quiet metal clank.

“Fuck” she murmured, trying and failing to reach it. Both of her legs, her left hand, and her torso were still bound.

She put all of her weight on one side of the chair, slipping her foot with the rope still on from its leg. She did the same on the other side, leaned to try and reach the pendant again.

She had however miscalculated how much force she needed and ended up falling to the right with a squeak of surprise, still attached to the chair.

Jesse grabbed what was left of her necklace, and started rubbing it at the rope binding her left hand.

“Well, well, I see you've woken up” a loud voice boomed through the chamber

She didn’t reply. The rope snapped. One more.

A figure, covered by shadows slowly entered her eyeshot.

The shadows slowly dissipated, revealing an unnaturally tall figure slowly approaching her.

It stopped about a meter and a half in front of her, and now she could make out its features

It was a man, with shoulder-length raven-black hair, a ghostly pale face, and unnaturally looking eyes. She wasn’t sure what exactly was wrong with him, but it made her experience an uncanny valley.

He was really tall, definitely more than two meters, and wore a formerly white linen shirt, hemp pants tucked into leather boots, and a woolen cloak, all in various shades of black-ish green and brown. He looked ancient.

“Hello, child,” he said, not looking at her

Jesse kept trying to cut the rope “Who are you?” she asked, her voice steady despite the fear she felt

The man grinned, but the emotion stopped at his mouth, not reaching his eyes which remained cold, untouched. “‘Who am I?’...” he said, “That’s a spot-on question, Jesse Valerie Shadewalker”

Jesse glanced at him, surprised, “That’s… Not my name”

“Oh, yeah, ‘Blackwood’. How could I’ve forgotten,” he said, his voice colder than the stone walls “we don’t use that surname anymore”

And at that moment, the pendant went through the last binding.

Tw: TWs: death of a parent mention, fear of loved ones being taken away, kinda disturbing descriptions, negative headspace and thoughts, burning, threats, murder/injuring attempt

While the snowstorm was subsiding, it did not in fact make Jesse’s day better.

She was curled up on the couch, bundled up in blankets and her partner, Vi’s, lap, trying and failing to not let the recent events get to her.

Being the one who found Élaine, she had to touch her mother’s corpse, call 112, give her statement to the police and notify her siblings. And all in the short interval of the last four days.

And now, since her mother didn’t have any living relatives, and Jesse was legally an adult , she had to attend a court meeting to get her siblings’ custody rights transferred onto her.

Summarizing, the day was awful in every single of its many aspects.

“Are you sure you’re okay?” asked Vi, putting her hand on Jesse’s shoulder in a reassuring manner “This must be a lot”

Vivien Ember Duvau, to most known as just Vi, was a nineteen year old, icy-blue-eyed trans girl, and Jesse’s queerplatonic partner. She usually had her ashy blonde hair in a fishtail braid, with a bay leaf shaped hairpin holding half of her bangs from her face.

Jesse was quiet for a few seconds “yeah, it’s just..” her breath hitched “I have no idea what to do, y’know” she said, her voice shaky “everything just kinda collapsed. My mother’s dead, the twins are god knows where and might get taken away”

She leaned her head against Vi’s shoulder, cueing the latter to put her arms around her, which she did.

That was a month ago. Truly a disaster, if you ask me.

Well, at least one good thing came of that, and that is; Jesse V. Blackwood managed to win custody of her siblings

Which also meant that—unfortunately—she had to prepare lunch.

And truth be told she couldn’t cook, even if her life depended on it, which I suppose it did.

So after destroying two pans and almost burning the house down, trying to heat up some half dead omelet that Vi made, she had to admit defeat.

And thus she decided to order pizza. She bought two, one with salami and one hawaiian. She hated pineapple, especially on pizza, but oh well, the twins loved it.

While the pizza was still not here she went to the living room, definitely not looking at the charred spot that was haphazardly covered with a rug. And absolutely not having her mother’s dead eyes staring at her very soul flash before her. She flinched, repeating a string of ‘shut up brain’s and keeping her eyes shut.

When she finally managed to collect herself she flopped down onto the couch, and reached for the TV remote, but it turned on by itself.

“What the hell…” she whispered, staring at the screen in confusion

It showed a soap opera, or, more accurately, a single scene replaying over and over.

She didn’t however get the chance to figure out what that meant, because the kitchen radio suddenly turned on, making her jump.

The volume gradually increased and she felt herself start to shake. The radio would only be able to pick up on polish stations, and yet it spoke in english. It was a snippet of an interview with someone.

Jesse could feel the temperature drop, which was now at somewhere close to 10℃. Her breaths soon turned opaque, as she slowly descended into the bottomless pit of panic.

She grabbed the triquetra shaped necklace she always wore and clutched it desperately. She’d gotten it from her father, Antoni, back when he still loved her was there.

“Whenever you feel scared,” he’d said back then, with a soft smile “just hold it and think of me”

Then, she saw a woman materialize in front of her. She had really pale skin, almost like a (pun intended) ghost, with raven black hair. She had very prominent bags under her pitch black eyes and was dressed in a simple white nightgown.

Along with her arrival, the main light started flickering.

Jesse wanted to sc— well, at this point her to-do list was horribly long and thus she did nothing, just staying frozen, staring in horror.

The woman stared at her, before saying:

“It is really you” her voice was eerie, somewhat robotic and generally unsettling “She, of whom They speak”

Despite all that was currently happening, every ounce of fear Jesse had, seemed to disappear, leaving her to dumbfoundedness.

“Wha..what are you doing in my house??” she asked, her mouth somehow not making any sound

Still, it didn’t bother the woman the least. She paid Jesse no mind and just kept talking

“I truly cannot fathom you exist” she said, her body still “The Daughter of A’graeth” a sinister smile ghosted on her thin, pale lips “As luck would have it, you’re all by yourself, dear. All the wardings are down…”

Jesse just stared

“Oh, and would you look at that” she teased “It seems that you have just lost your mother”

“Get out of my head” whispered Jesse, her tone dripping with spite

She knew she should’ve been scared, there was a ghost in her living room for hell’s sake.

And yet she couldn’t

Huh, that’s strange

“Oooh She speaks!” the ghost beamed, taking a step forward “Well, why don’t you tell me your name, dearie?”

Jesse slowly stood up and took a shaky step in the direction of the exit. “Why should I? You’re a ghost; it’s not like you can hurt me” right??

The ghostly woman just laughed. It was an awful sound, demonic almost. It made Jesse think of the way a serial killer might laugh while murdering their victim. Loud. Disturbing.

“Oh, sweety,” she didn’t stop laughing. “You poor child. You see, that would’ve been true, if you weren’t wrong about something else” Jesse paled significantly “Because I, my child, am not a ghost”

There was not enough time to react. Jesse bolted to the exit, but the woman was too fast. She lunged at her, pinning the girl to the wall.

SHITSHITSHITSHITSHITSHITSHITSHITSHITSHITSHITSHITSHITSHIT

Jesse tried to wiggle herself free, but the woman's grip was made of steel. There were small trails of smoke coming from where the woman’s claws fingers were touching Jesse’s black hoodie.

The woman raised her hand, her awfully long claws ready to lacerate the girl’s whatever vital point she had chosen, when she suddenly stilled, her hand frozen mid strike.

Jesse dared to look at the woman and, seeing her lips locked in a silent scream, slid to the ground.

And luckily she did, because the next second the woman was engulfed in flames.

They were so bright she was actually afraid they might permanently damage her eyes, and so she shut them, not looking at the horrible sight in front of her. She couldn’t move, as if her limbs were made of lead, and glued to the ground.

And at the exact moment, the front door opened.

Alright, so this is the first part of my Fic. Lemme know if there are any misspellings or stuff like that because splish splash my autocorrect is trash.

A/N: I'll format it tomorrow since now I'm practically falling aslesp

-

"What the hell?" said Jesse, shooting upward from the position she was crouched in. It was dark around her, she couldn't even see her own hands. She turned around, and thinking she had her eyes still closed, blinked rapidly.

This however, didn't seem to be the issue, the room—or whatever she was in—being still completely invisible.

"Kat?" she called out. No reply.

Jesse started to blindly walk forward, trying not to collide with anything. She turned abruptly, seeing a glimpse of something in her peripheral vision. It disappeared as fast as it showed, and for a second, she could've sworn that it looked human-like.

"Where the hell am I?" she asked herself

She kept on walking, almost tripping a few times and once actually tripping.

Something moved, in what she assumed was the corner of the room, and she heard creaking. She hadn't noticed it at first, but the floor was made of old, dirty wood. Her eyes were starting to hurt from the darkness, or maybe the dust? She didn't know anymore.

Jesse closed her eyes, and slowly wandered in another direction. At this point, everything was eerily quiet, making her feel even more uncomfortable. The dust was getting thicker, and it was harder to breathe with every second.

When the amount of whatever-was-in-the-air was getting unbearable, Jesse's hands touched something solid, which after further investigation turned out to be a door. She slid her fingers across it, and feeling the cold metal of a handle, opened the door.

------------gore tw-------------

-Seriously, consider yourself warned-

The smell that hit her was…well, disgusting to say at least. She opened her eyes, and immediately wished she hadn't. The room, which supposedly was once Cindy's bedroom, now had its walls freshly painted. In red.

The floor looked even worse, littered with parts of something as bloody as the walls. The sensations combined made her gag, so she clenched her fists, and tried to block out the smell.

She kept walking forward, careful not to touch any of the remains. She wanted to scream. What the hell had happened, she kept asking herself.

Strange thing was, the room no longer even looked like a room. It was endless, like a flat world in minecraft.

Jesse heard something scraping behind her, so she abruptly turned around. There was someone standing at the end of the room. Oh, so it had an end after all. The person turned around, and she could see who it was.

"Oh for hell's sake" squeaked Jesse "Kat, why did you have to do this?!"

But Kat didn't answer, she was just standing there, staring at her creepily.

She felt there was something wrong. Well, maybe besides the corpses around her "Kat?"she asked

Something dark was slowly dripping on Kat's face, just under her eyes, making it look like she wore smeared make-up. Strange kid, she was. About ten, though she mostly acted like an adult. In some things, she was way smarter than her older sister.

Now however, she looked like the woman from The Ring. Her white onesie's hood was down, making her raven black hair contrast with it, and with her face, which was super pale.

Jesse mentally slapped herself on her face and reached into her pocket to take out her phone. She turned on the flashlight, and wished she hadn't.

Behind Kat, there was a dark, shadowy thing. And it wasn't the nice kind of thing. It kinda looked like a silhouette, but translucent.

The kid looked even worse. Frozen in place, with blood pouring from her eyes, and another dark stain on stomach. It was dark red, and looked dried. Which meant that it was made when they were still outside the house.

---Safe to read for the sensitive---

This was all Jesse needed to know

"Oh fuck" she screamed and started blindly running across the room. She didn't see the kid, nor the shadow, but sensing their presence made her skin crawl enough. She kept glancing behind her, so the other side of the room surprised her. She slammed on the door, making it open and after getting herself up, kept sprinting across the lawn.

She didn't see the shadow of a girl in a window behind her, or how the house looked untouched. Her feet led her to the place where she left her siblings, though now, the lamp was on. It was unusual, the lamps were never on. She was almost there, when she accidently stepped on the edge of her nightgown, tripping.

Her knees flared up in pain and for a second, she closed her eyes.

☆☆☆

When Jesse opened her eyes, she was still standing with her siblings under the lamp. They were discussing something, and it took her a second to focus enough to understand what they were talking about.

"…Jesse?" Will finally asked "What do you think?"

"About what" she said, careful not to let her voice betray how shaken she actually felt "Sorry, I wasn't listening"

"Are you okay?" Allie tried, taking a close look at her sister's pale face

"Yeah, why?"

"What did you do?"

"You never apologize."

Jesse stared at them in confusion. The suddenly-working-lamp didn't give enough light for her to actually see their faces clearly, but she was sure they were unfazed by the whole ordeal. How in the hell did they not panic. Their whole friend group was just murdered and they're like 'ok'.

"How are you so calm?" she asked instead

Will and Allie shot each other a knowing glance "How long did you sleep today?"

Jesse glanced at the house. It looked just like it had before the fire. Strange. "Uhh, I didn't" she quickly dropped the previous topic. She'll find answers later.

After a slow walk back to their house, Jesse threw herself on her bed. She didn't want to sleep, but after not even five minutes she was dead asleep

----

*Crawls out from the fiery pits of hell*

Yo guys, I did the murder.

It has nothing to do with it but my dog's currently rolling on my carpet and making hella weird noises
