The Business

The reader and Yoongi fall asleep to a crime show. Criminal sleepy talk ensues.

You and Yoongi have turned in for the evening. The apartment is dark, the only sign of life remaining in your shared bedroom. A Netflix show is playing from the television in front of the bed you are both lying in, the light from the screen flooding the space, outlining your forms in a soft glow. Both of you were on your phones, flipping through apps, winding down from the day, waiting for sleep to hit you. It was a comfortable silence apart from a random yawn and the whisper of the British narrator of the show. The voice was carrying on about numerous crime scenarios solved with the help of forensic science, detective work and...

“What an idiot.”

Yoongi’s comment pulls you away from the mobile card game that is barely keeping you awake. You spare a glance at the television presenting evidence photos of broken windows before looking down at him for an elaboration. Your boyfriend was lying next to you dressed in loose navy pajama pants and a white shirt. Having migrated to your side of the bed, he was balancing his head on an elbow barely an inch from your side. You notice he had paused whatever video he was watching on his phone before throwing it behind him, now fully engrossed in the show in front of him.

“He broke into that family’s house and didn’t wear gloves! Of course they’re going to find fingerprints. Good job, you wore a mask and covered the markings from your boots but your fingerprints are identifiable!” He is staring at the television with furrowed brows, like he's waiting for the narrator to apologize.

While turning off your phone and placing it on the nightstand, you laugh at Yoongi’s tone. He sounds like he's actually offended at this amateur burglar but you try an explanation anyway: “Maybe it was a spur-of-the-moment thing and he just decided to pick a random house to ransack.”

Yoongi drops his arm and looks up at you, squinting his eyes in disappointment. “He had a whole kit, Y/N. He was prepared for this.”

“It was his first job,” you continue to defend the intruder just to rile your boyfriend up.

It seems to work as he glares and pushes his lips out at you. You are the picture of innocence, rubbing your tired eyes in one of his oversized shirts with mussed up hair, but he isn't backing down.

“Well if this is going to be his job he should just get some acid and burn his prints off otherwise he’s not gonna get far in the business.” Suddenly he is an expert.

“The business” you repeat in a mocking tone. You slide down lower on your pillows, bringing yourself to his level, coming face to face with his brown, expecting eyes. You can’t help but ruffle his black fringe when you get this close to him, and he always lets you, scrunching his nose in faux-disgust until you finish.

Your hand leaves his hair and he grabs it, mindlessly tracing the sides of your fingers with his own. “Yeah, the business,” he begins, talking through a yawn. “The whole crime syndicate. It starts with petty things like burglary and stealing from corner stores but then once you’ve proven yourself, you can start laundering money and tracking people.” The fact he is smirking by the time he finishes proves he is just talking for the sake of talking, trying to stay awake.

"You sure you're not getting confused with the mafia?" You start laughing as the program shows pictures of the petty criminal. This ungloved culprit definitely wasn't mafia material.

"Well..." Yoongi pauses to watch the same pictures flash the screen, "the mafia is a business. And we don't forget our gloves."

“We?" You burst out in drowsy laughter and he joins you, not registering his choice of words until they were already spoken.

"I didn’t realize I was dating a criminal," you joke when you finally finish laughing.

Yoongi leans forward, head now on your stomach. “Oh, I’m pretty sure you’ve killed someone.”

“Not if they can’t produce a body.” You grin innocently, wagging your index finger at him.

Yoongi flashes a proud gummy smile while chuckling “That’s my little killer. We could use someone like you at the business. ”

You smile as you grab at the comforter, readjusting your position and pulling the fabric higher. Yoongi scoots up, making himself comfortable after you settle, deciding being on his side with an arm around your middle will be his sleeping position tonight. "I bet you even wore gloves," he says with utmost certainty, nuzzling his head below your shoulder.

Despite your amusement, you let the comments fall, impending slumber not allowing you to continue. "Good night, Yoongs."

He yawns one last time before humming in acknowledgment. " ‘Night, killer."
