I Have An Interesting Little Piece Of Star Trek TNG Media To Share Today, It's Pretty Obscure And I've
i have an interesting little piece of Star Trek TNG media to share today, it's pretty obscure and i've seen literally no discussion of it online at all. my dad is a really big fan of Star Trek, especially Star Trek TNG, and he has this DVD box set of season 1 of the show. it was released around 2002-2003 and it's this big bulky gray capsule box that contains a foldable disc sleeve thing, and most importantly, a little pamphlet that holds descriptions for the main characters of the series. it's a really neat little piece of media, but what i want to focus on is how it describes Data, because i think it's very interesting.

(apologies for the glare)
"Data - A unique and super-intelligent android, Data was created by the genius Dr Noonien Soong to be as human as possible. However, powerful though as his positronic brain might be, Data is unable to comprehend emotion."
the language it uses to describe Data and his relationship with emotions is really intriguing to me. it doesn't say he cannot feel emotions, but rather than he can't comprehend them. it's pretty commonly agreed on in the Star Trek fandom that Data can absolutely feel emotions, but he just can't process or express them in a human-like way. the show is not very good at convincing people that Data is an unfeeling automaton, lol. he definitely feels things, but he's convinced that he can't because he doesn't feel things like a human does. i feel like this pamphlet corroborates that in a way. just,, the language of "unable to comprehend" rather then "unable to feel" comes off as a very deliberate choice with this in mind. characters in the show, including Data himself, will always say that he cannot feel emotions first and foremost, and it feels significant to me that a piece of official media would instead focus more on Data having trouble comprehending emotion. comprehending something and feeling something are two very different things. i feel like this is important.
i'll try to see if i can get the whole pamphlet scanned and uploaded online. again, it's quite an obscure piece of media and i can't seem to find it anywhere. i don't know if i'll be able to account for pamphlets that were released with dvds of the later seasons as i think we only have the season 1 box from this set. i hope they all get found and scanned someday!!

it's so orange today... 7th of October on a Monday.... two oranges and a slight orangey brown.... everything is perfectly balanced as it should be
i posted this to Pillowfort earlier but a couple days ago i did an unfinished redraw of this older sketch from 2023 of Salesman Barry and High-rank Craig together :3 Barry had a really rough day trying to sell his gramophones and he's struggling to deal with his financial issues and pressure to uphold a family tradition, and Craig can understand how he feels as he has to work for a pretty shitty boss (cough cough brains), and his job as a scientist, while enjoyable, was partially pursued out of being pressured as well.

(the old drawing in question)

(you can't even see them properly....)
additionally: i have created a digital redraw that's still a work in progress but i thought it looked good so i'm posting it :) i have been trying a newer style from my earlier digital stuff and i think it works well with the Jetpack Joyride characters!!

the Pillowfort post has an earlier version with slightly different tears and colouring and stuff, i wanted to put a more up to date version here. also fanon Craig with colour for the first time!?!?!?!?? what!!! i like to think Craig wore a similarish kind of outfit to Runingunin when he first appears in Brains' lab in AOZ. i like to think Craig would wear a "Trust Data Not Lore" t-shirt underneath his coat loll

something about Cohost going read-only last week feels very... deeply saddening to me in a way i'm not sure i can verbalise with emotions alone. like there's a sense of bittersweet sadness seeing everybody pour their hearts out for the dying platform, celebrating the life it had, saddening eulogies and pieces of vibrant art, joyfully commiting all the css crimes they can before the inevitability of read-only mode hits them... and then suddenly, when the clock strikes 12 on the last day, it all goes silent. the posts stop being posted. the endless voices of the users go eerily quiet. the site freezes in time, not quite dead yet but very much not alive anymore. it has effectively become a rotting time capsule, slowly waiting for the day everything goes offline for the final time ever. we all knew it was coming, and yet it still feels like it took us all by surprise when it happened. Cohost is now a shell of its former self. it feels like walking through a hall of crumbling stone people, captured in their final moments of celebration, sadness, reflection, all no longer living but still looking as though they were, terracotta ghosts slowly rotting away.
i think the quote "I felt a disturbance in the Force, as if millions of voices suddenly cried out in terror and were suddenly silenced" fits really well with how this makes me feel. this sounds like a VERY strong way to feel about a silly website with eggs and bugs and css tomfoolery, but it's always sad to see a cornerstone of the internet that held a tight-knit community of thousands of people disappear into the ether, especially in such a slow and quiet way. looking at the site in the state it is now gives a lonely sort of sadness. staring in the face of a community frozen in time and knowing it was once vibrant and lively just a year ago. it's a very weird feeling.
