kaidou is someone who is easily flustered. he blushes at the thought of holding your hand, of kissing you ⸺ hell, even looking at you has him flustered and he can't for the life of him figure out why. he doesn't understand why he's thinking these things about you but he's far too embarrassed to ask someone! so, he decides, he'll just keep his feelings to himself.

it isn't until they're stranded on that island that he figures it out.

he figures out why his gaze always lingers on you a little bit longer than people who are "just friends" normally would. why he thinks about your arms comfortably wrapped around his waist while the two of you watch a movie. why he fantasized about all of these romantic things ⸺ and why you're the other person in them. not teruhashi, like every one else. like he was before he met you. just you.

he realizes through small, loving glances that you gaze at him the same way. that when you find him looking, you send him a small smile that seems to be reserved for only him. that you always make time for him. whether that's studying with him or him just raving about the dark reunion. you call him cute when he does that, not in a mocking way, but in a way that feels so genuine that he has to swoon.

the two of you wonder how long you'll dance around each other like this. you wonder how long you'll have to fantasize about doing all of the couple-y things you want to do before you're finally allowed to do them. maybe it'll continue forever. you might have to watch each other unhappily marry women, because that's what's supposed to make you happy, right? women. not each other. two men in a relationship would be looked down upon by society.

▸ kita’s brows are furrowed ever so faintly in confusion, but the apples of his cheeks give him away, glowing rosy. he takes in your smile and the adoring glimmer in your eye that he’s still not grown used to - how could he? - and moves to grasp your hand in his own, interlacing your fingers. “thank you, beautiful,” he murmurs, lips pressing softly against the back of your hand.

▸ lev absolutely beams! his smile is dopey and wide and he’s quick to wrap his arms around you in an appreciative hug. he all but shouts his “thanks!” sheer delight radiating from him as you gently squeeze his torso. it’s less than a second after lev finally lets you out his hold that he’s rubbing his cheek against your own, a laugh spilling from your lips - his favourite sound.
