This year, you’re spending Christmas with your parents and siblings. Since you got married to Namjoon, you’ve been alternating each year between your family and his on this special time. But this year, everything is super special as it is your youngest son’s first Christmas.  

A little over seven months ago, you gave birth to your second child, Hyeon. Becoming a mother for a second time was a dearest dream of yours, you desperately wanted to give a sibling to your firstborn, Hwan but it wasn’t an easy thing. Almost two years after Hwan’s birth, you stopped using birth control and condoms in order to try to conceive a little human but it didn’t work.

Naturally, you both went to the doctor for a checkup who eventually ended up helping you to create this little monster called Hyeon. It was hard to not be able to naturally conceive a second baby and for a little while, you were ashamed to even say that you received medical assistance to bring your second son to the world. But today, nothing of that matters because he’s here. He’s celebrating his first Christmas with you.  

Your eyes instinctively look for your husband, the love of your life. He’s rocking Hyeon to sleep as he just finished drinking his bottle of milk. Usually, you breastfeed your baby but for this occasion, you preferred to prepare a couple of bottles of milk so you don’t have to undress or withdraw to a room to feed your baby.

Hyeon has his big brown eyes open, looking at his father who’s singing a little lullaby while he’s mumbling incoherent sounds to his father. Unlike his older brother, your youngest son is already pretty talkative. He simply loves to talk when one of you is singing to him a lullaby or when his brother is around him. For a seven months old, he’s pretty responsive to the environment around him.    

“Mommy look!” Hwan yells as he’s showing you the amazing construction he did with his grandfather.

A bright smile appears on your face as you watch your son playing with your father. Since he became a grandfather, he’s turned into a massive marshmallow. Everything his grandchildren desire, he gives it to them and he even gifts them with unbelievable presents throughout the whole year. But he’s also constantly playing with his grandchildren even if he’s too old to follow them.

However, his constant presence in his grandchildren’s lives makes them adore him. Hwan always wants to be around his granddad, and he doesn’t take a ‘no’ for an answer. He simply loves his grandfather with all his heart, something you absolutely adore because your father is the first man you ever loved.

“Wow!” You pretend to be surprised by the construction although you’ve already seen it for the millionth time this evening. “That’s awesome, love!”

A proud smile appears on your son’s face, little dimples appearing on his face. Those dimples, he inherited them from his father, and every time they appear, your heart instantly melts because those same dimples made you fall completely in love with him a couple of years ago.

Hwan resumes constructing something else with your father while you keep eating with your mother and younger sister. In front of you, Namjoon is sitting with your baby in his arms while your sister’s partner is sitting next to him. Since your husband is trying to put your son to sleep, your sister’s partner is attending your conversation in order to not disturb little Hyeon.  

“I still need to find a dress for Minjeong’s wedding,” your sister tells your mother. “She’s getting married in less than a month and I don’t have anything to wear!”

While your sister keeps talking about wedding dresses, your concerned eyes focus on your husband and son. Hyeon hasn’t been sleeping a lot at night lately which has transformed your barely existing nights of sleep into fully awakened nights for both you and Namjoon. You honestly don’t know how on earth you’re still alive right now.

Luckily for you, for the past week, his parents have been staying with the boys while you and Namjoon take naps throughout the entire afternoon so you’d be fresh and awake during the whole night. Since you need to pass time at night while your baby boy smiles at you, you’ve been discussing a lot the possibility of having a third kid but it has always been brushed away by the fact that right now, nothing is easy.

But your husband would absolutely love to have a little daughter.

His best friend, Hoseok recently became the father of a precious Aeri. He has seen how different it is to be a father of a boy and of a girl, and he would love to have his own little daughter. He’d love to experience this different kind of love although you’re very convinced on your side that it doesn’t change anything. In the end, it is a child of yours and you’ll love that baby the same way you already love Hwan and Hyeon.

As you watch Hyeon peacefully fall asleep in his father’s strong arms, it reminds you of the day you first met Namjoon. He practically was in the same position however he was holding a book in his hands instead of a baby.

Almost ten years ago, in the midst of a park, you saw a divine man sitting on a bench while deeply reading a book. At that time, his current black hair was blonde, and a pair of glasses was resting over his nose. He was so deep into his reading that he didn’t notice you taking a seat next to him to read your own book. “The Girl on the Train” from Paula Hawkins was your selection back then, and till this day, it’s still one of your favorite books.

For a couple of hours, you sat next to each other reading your own little book. None of you spoke to each other until Namjoon needed to leave. At that time, he didn’t have any watch or phone with him since he simply wanted to disconnect from the world to enjoy his book so he naturally asked you what time it was. When you turned to look at him, he was honestly mind blown by your beauty.

After that day, for an entire week, you’d both meet on that bench every day but for that week, instead of reading, you’d both talk about the books you were supposed to read. You’d also give the other some suggestions about books to read, and just like that, a little love story started. After that week, you both decided to go on an actual date which led to the start of your life together.

The two of you still read on a daily basis, and now, you read children’s books to little Hwan. He adores his bedtime story, he can’t go to sleep without his little story. At only four, what he adores the most is to see all those drawings on the books but it honestly makes you happy to see him excited every day.

After daydreaming about your little family, you again join the conversation between your mother, sister, and her partner. Namjoon also quickly joins in after Hyeon finally falls asleep in his arms. It wasn’t an easy task but he managed to put him to sleep. Tonight will actually be the first night your son will sleep but most probably by the time you head home, he’ll wake up.

Hwan suddenly leaves his grandpa and his construction game to ask his father something.

“Papa, is time for gifts?” Hwan asks.

A smile appears on your husband's face while he caresses your youngest son’s hair. As he does so, he quickly takes a look at his watch.

“Three more minutes,” he answers.

Since Hwan’s birth, you decided with both your families that it’ll be better to open presents on Christmas Eve at midnight. It’s almost impossible for a child to see so many presents and wait until the next morning to open them. Hwan has proven that over the past three years and still today, he simply can’t wait to open his presents.

“We can maybe start distributing the presents to everyone?” Your mother suggests.

She adores watching Hwan’s expressions when he unwraps his presents. She also adores being his grandmother, nothing makes her happier than watching that little human blossoms each day more.

“Yeah, we can do that,” you agree with her.

“Hwan, can you start giving the presents with me?” Your father asks your little baby.

“Yeah,” he yells as he runs to the Christmas tree.

Both your father and son start distributing the presents to everyone while you decide to join Namjoon. You stand next to him while he places his head against your stomach.

“Do you want me to take him?” You ask him.

You run your fingers on his short black hair which causes him to close his eyes. He loves to feel your touch on his body.

“No, I’m going to put him on his little bed while we unwrap the presents,” he replies before opening his eyes and looking up at you.

That’s a very good idea, that way everyone will be able to open their presents peacefully and once it’s done, you’ll just check on Hyeon to confirm if he’s still sleeping. You strongly believe that once Namjoon will lay him on the bed, he’ll instantly wake up because he just loves to be in his parents’ arms when he sleeps.

Namjoon disappears for a moment while your oldest son distributes the presents to everyone almost as if he’s Santa Claus. But it makes him incredibly happy which in the end is the only thing that truly matters. As you notice your little baby putting in front of his father’s chair the gift you bought for him, your heart starts beating extremely fast.

But that nervousness is quickly pushed away when you notice how excited Hwan is to open all the presents he received this year. Becoming a mother has shown you again the true magic of Christmas. A magic that slowly disappears as we all grow up but everything suddenly reappears once children are brought up. Honestly, if you could, you’d never let your children grow older.

A couple of minutes later, your husband comes back and sits again on the same chair. You’re still standing next to his place so he naturally places a kiss on top of your head before sitting down.

“Is he still sleeping?” You ask with concern.

“Yeah, he woke up when I put him down but he quickly fell asleep.” He explains to you.

“Thanks, love,” you tell him before pressing a kiss on top of his head.

His heart swells with love as you show him affection. Since you’re a very modest person, you tend to simply not demonstrate anything in front of others and Namjoon has grown to respect that side of you, but it always melts his heart when you simply display affection through small gestures.

Slowly, you all open your presents with the biggest smiles on your face, but you open yours while keeping an eye on your husband. You don’t want to miss his reaction when he opens your gift.

Hwan screams with joy every time he unwraps a gift, excitement shining through his brown orbs. Everyone is trying to help him as he wants to open everything at the same time. He’s just the cutest little bean right now and nothing makes you prouder than being his mother.

Soon enough, you notice Namjoon unwrapping your present, and you now focus completely on him. He slowly unties the gift wrap before putting it aside to take a clear look at the little rectangular box. As he understands this gift comes from you, he glances up at you with his brows furrowed.

“What is this?” He asks.

“Open and you’ll see,” you reply with a smile.

He looks at you with suspicion, he has no idea what this little present might be but now, he’s definitely curious to figure that out. So, he opens the rectangular box and his heart drops when he sees what is inside.

“No, that can’t be true!” He exclaims.

A wide smile appears on your face as he stands up to strongly wrap you in his arms. Tears of joy start to run down his face and your heart is bursting with happiness. All eyes are now on you two, all your family members trying to figure out what is happening.  

“It’s totally true, honey!” You reply while you’re being squished in his arms.

With both his hands on your arms, he pushes you a tiny bit away to have a proper look at your face. He simply can’t believe it!

“When did you find out?”

“I had some doubts for the past couple of weeks but I had the confirmation a week ago. I figured out that this would be your Christmas gift so I’ve been keeping it as a surprise.”

For a solid three weeks, you’ve been suspecting that you’re carrying your third little monster but since you were extremely scared to be disappointed as it was the case before you got pregnant with Hyeon, you pushed that doubt away. However, with time, the symptoms have grown stronger, leaving no place for doubts. So last week, you took several pregnancy tests that confirm your suspicions.

“Maybe this time, it’ll be a girl,” you say with a smile on your face.

Namjoon covers your face with kisses as he fully processes the news.

alright let's talk about Apple and Tumblr's current predicament. If you don't know already, I used to work at Tumblr as an iOS engineer. Though I keep in touch with current staff at Tumblr (what little that are left that I know) I do not have picture of what's going on internally. The banned word list is absolutely perplexing and I can only theorize why tags like 'long post' are banned from appearing on iOS. What I can do is give you a peek into how the Apple App Store review process works, so you have an idea of the hell that Tumblr staff is dealing with right now.

Let me be clear about this from the get-go: I think Apple's censorship policies are wrong and they have no grounds to be policing adult content within apps on the app store. Apple's power to set content policy over apps is absolutely fueled first and foremost by internal policy that goes back to Steve Jobs. After that, they're beholden to payment processors wanting to distance themselves from porn. Finally, there's lawmakers and policy that influence them as well. I think these are the 3 things that shape their policy decisions, in order.

What happens when you submit an App to the App Store?

You compile an app and submit it to the app store, and it proceeds through an automated and manual process to review your app to ensure it meets Apple's standards. Apple's standards are 1) non-malicious, functioning programs, and 2) programs that adhere to the App Store's review guidelines that cannot be asserted in the same way a program can. These guidelines are judged by a human being assigned to your app during the review process. The review process used to be long, sometimes it would take weeks, but in recent years they've got it down to about 24 hours.

Now, there's a laundry list of things in those guidelines, but we're going to focus on adult content because that's the most relevant. If a reviewer runs your app and finds porn, your app is rejected and you're told to correct the problem.

What's Tumblr dealing with now?

In the case of Tumblr, this would be a reviewer going to search, typing in something like 'tits' and finding porn. Sometimes they would search something more innocuous like 'socks' (yeah, i know) and find porn. Sometimes they would search something completely innocent and find porn anyways. Tumblr would get rejected.

This happened regularly. I'd say once every 5 updates (every time Tumblr updates the iOS app, they have to re-submit the app for review). A reviewer would find porn, and respond by sending us the steps they followed to find it and a screenshot of the content. Tumblr staff would remove the porn, resubmit, the reviewer would find nothing, then approve the app. Once in a while Tumblr would get a really persistent reviewer. It would take a handful of porn scrubs and re-submissions before they'd finally green-light an update.

Sometimes, however, Tumblr would get a reviewer who flags tumblr for porn, and when Tumblr opened the rejection notice, the screenshot would be something completely not porn. I'm talking stuff like a woman in a bikini. Not even posing in a porny way. Something you'd see in like, a laser hair removal ad. In these cases, Tumblr would appeal the rejection, saying the content doesn't violate our policies (and to the best of our knowledge, Apple's) so we won't remove it.

In this case, the appeal gets bumped up to a developer support contact that would manage the appeal. Usually when it got there, the contact would look at the report and say "oh, yeah, that's not porn" and tell us to re-submit the app again. It then would usually be approved.

This process, I believe, is where the problem lies. Of course, the bigger picture is Apple's adult content policies, but the relationship between reviewer, developer support, and policymakers is completely fucking discordant. Since the review process is human, some reviewers interpret the guidelines more strict that others. Since the review process chooses a random reviewer, the review experience is random every time.

The developer support contact is not in direct contact with the reviewer and does not communicate with them in any way, other than the report they receive from the review (that Tumblr has too). The dev support contact also cannot tell Tumblr whether they'll pass review if they were to propose hypothetical changes to Tumblr.

Here's the kicker: your developer support contact will also, like the reviewer, not be consistent from case to case. They stick with you until your appeal is complete, but when you have to open a new case for a subsequent rejection, it's someone new. And every one of them had different answers to the same questions about policies regarding adult content.

I really don't think the people enforcing Apple's app store guidelines have a clear answer on what's porn and what's not, and they're left to decide on a case-by case basis. Apple is fucking massive, and it's a waterfall organization where orders come from the top down. If Tumblr gets rejected because a reviewer decided a woman in a bikini is pornographic, no one in Apple gives a shit. I bet no more than a handful of people in Apple right now are even aware of the situation with Tumblr, and just one person (the dev support contact) is deciding what Tumblr must do to resolve it and stay on the App store.

The 2018 porn ban

I was present for the 2018 app store fiasco and boy, it was mind boggling. The removal was legit since Apple had received a user-submitted report of CSAM, and by policy they immediately yank an app that contains such content. That was 100% understandable, and if I were in Apple's shoes, I too would remove an app that has CSAM in it. But what followed was a gauntlet of rigorous reviews over adult content in general. The app was rejected repeatedly until the infamous adult content ban was fully enacted.

While Tumblr was actively working on the ban, they were asking Apple for any sort of guidance on what would meet approval, because as you know it's impossible to scrub a UGC site of adult content. The answers we got were either vague or unhelpful. Tumblr had to just keep re-submitting over and over with a half-baked porn finding algorithm until it finally looked clean enough for Apple.

During this time, we'd be searching Twitter, Instagram, etc, for the same search terms that we were being rejected for, and finding lots and lots of porn. When the rep was asked if other apps went through the same rigamarole that Tumblr was going through, and why they had porn on their apps, the answers we got were "we can't discuss other apps" (of course) and "that shouldn't happen".

Now, I do not want to get conspiratorial about this because I genuinely don't think Apple has it out for Tumblr. What I do think is it's a combination of the discordant enforcement of policy, caused by the complete separation of policymaker, support, and reviewer. It's also less of a problem for other apps like Twitter, Instagram, etc because they have many, many more staff to deal with the problem. They have more staff to build and maintain porn-removing algorithms, and more staff to put out fires caused by App Store rejections.

A little part of me also wants to be cynical and say that since Instagram and Twitter are so big, they can get away with more than Tumblr can. Combine that with Tumblr's history of blatantly allowing porn up until the end of 2018. I can't prove it, of course, but if Tumblr has a reputation at Apple, it can't be a good one.

Apple's reputation amongst developers

As I mentioned I'm an iOS engineer. I talk to other iOS engineers all the time, not only at my current job but also in other places like Slack instances for iOS development. The iOS engineers at Tumblr did not like Apple's bullshit one bit, which is unsurprising. However, my experience thus far is the vast, vast majority of iOS engineers at other places feel the same way. Apple's review process is seen as an asinine hurdle you must clear. Their policies are not viewed in good light amongst iOS devs, though you'll have a mixed bag of sympathy over being rejected for some of them like the adult content one. It really depends if you've worked on any UGC apps on the app store. If you have, you get it.

Outside of adult content, though, the two other big ones that rub iOS devs the wrong way are the 30% cut Apple gets when devs get paid, and the completely arbitrary policy that Apps submitted to the app store must have a "clear purpose". I haven't talked to a single iOS dev who's been on the side of Apple in the Epic v Apple case over the 30% cut, and most of them are hoping for Apple to loosen up their control over the App Store (either voluntarily or by court order). The "clear purpose" policy means that reviewers can reject the app if they think it's useless, which is incredibly discouraging for new developers who are just trying to get out there with something simple. It also squelches creativity and reduces the field for more single-purpose apps.

Aside from App Store review guidelines, iOS developers also have to deal with ever-shifting technical guidelines that can be unclear, with deadlines that change or are vague as well. A good example of this was a recent change that required all Apps that were available on iPad to support split-screen multitasking. Not only did I get conflicting answers on what that means from Apple themselves and devs who were in contact with other Apple reps. No one knew if their iPad app would be yanked from the store, or if there was a way to opt out. This requirement forced many companies to scramble to update their iPad experience to meet this deadline, only for the requirement to be relaxed, and the deadline to be pushed back. Fun times, great use of dev hours.

The Apple fanboy you can picture when I say "Apple fanboy" is very unlikely to be an iOS developer. They probably just love Apple products and think that the company can do no wrong. The more Apple does to piss off their developers, the worse it's going to get for anyone who just wants to use an iPhone.

Anywho, that's Apple for you. Why am I still an iOS developer? I dunno, I got bills to pay. I think I know what Tumblr is working on to appease them. Don't expect this banned word list to last too long. The timing is awful, of course, since everyone on Apple is on vacation, and Tumblr is too. Have fun with the chaos for now. As always, don't take it out on staff. They're doing what they can.
