One of my favorite enduring, harmless mysteries has to be "Who the hell put that pumpkin on top of the clock tower at Cornell University?"

October 8, 1997 a peculiar visitor made an appearance, stabbed into the spire of the McGraw Tower at Cornell, 173ft up. At first people weren't even sure what it was, the familiar orange and round shape probably meant pumpkin, so students sent up a weather balloon with a drill to gather a sample, however to no avail. The campus Glee club modified the school Alam Mater to include lyrics abput the glorious squash, the campus newspaper included a "Pumpkin Watch" section, and a Webcam (quite a new, novel thing in 1997) was setup for 24/7 streaming of the spire. The pumpkin's precarious perch made national news more than once. Months later in March of 1998 the Provost Don Randel attempted to gather what remained of it with a bucket crane, and a strong wind knocked the bucket lift into the tower, causing the sudden vibration to make the now frozen husk fall to a lower scaffolding, unceremoniously. A sample was analyzed to confirm, it had indeed been a pumpkin all along.

The question remains how someone could possibly get it up undetected. Apart from hollowing it out first to fit as well as making it easier to carry, the journey to the top would have been treacherous. Allegedly at least one anonymous confession made over the years has included details surrounding clever use of duct tape, but the prankster remains unknown over 20 years later.

As an extra laugh, Cornell kept a sample encased and on display near samples of brain in the psychology department until the last organic matter rotted away. They also sell small clocktower replicas, pumpkin resting like the cherry on top included:
