This Time Last Year I Made Character Art As I Watched An AA Trilogy Playthrough For The First Timeso

Digital artwork in a cartoonish, cel-shaded style, depicting a small character lineup from the first 'Ace Attorney' game. From left to right: Maya Fey, Phoenix Wright, Miles Edgeworth and Dick Gumshoe. Each character has slightly more exaggerated proportions than canon.

Maya is the shortest and slim, drawn with round shapes. She stands with her feet together, right knee slightly bent and right hand held out beside her, whilst the other rests on her hip. She's smiling open-mouthed, looking playfully to her left.

Wright is taller and lean, using rounded squares. His feet are planted slightly apart, a case file under his right arm. He's pointing up with his left hand, elbow touching his side. He smiles mildly, one brow raised, looking to his left at Edgeworth.

Edgeworth is a little taller than Wright, skinny and using more angular shapes. His legs are locked together, right fist clenched by his side, whilst his left hand crushes a disposable cup of coffee that spills down. He glares at Wright, scowling.

Gumshoe is the tallest by far, thickset and drawn with rounded shapes. His feet are apart; he stands in a pose similar to canon, right hand scratching behind his head and left in his trouser pocket. He grins, open-mouthed and sheepish, eyes squeezed shut.

This time last year I made character art as I watched an AA trilogy playthrough for the first time…so I decided to recreate it for 2023!

🌱 Dragon Slayers: Evolution 🌱

This took a long time, but it was so fun to practice drawing full bodies (and cats 😭) for once! I actually sketched out the concept for these 3 pieces months ago— and recently decided to commit to proper drawings :D

[These pieces were for pure nostalgia, and to revisit media that was part of my artistic journey as a tween! I know the series has major flaws— the treatment of female characters, tasteless fanservice and poor relationship writing, to name a few. I despise these aspects, of course.

I want to make it clear that I drew this art to explore something that shaped my younger self's work. I don't condone Mashima's writing choices, nor did I even keep up with the later arcs of the story and the spin-off(s). Thank you for reading!]

Cartoonish, digital art of Ace Attorney characters gathered around a summer barbecue. They're cut off about halfway down. From left to right stands Bruce Goodman, Ema Skye, Lana Skye, Angel Starr, Jake Marshall and Neil Marshall (a couple of years before the SL-9 Incident).

The shading is a warm green, and the barbecue gives off a yellow glow. The background shows a lawn with roughly painted trees and a hedge. The foreground shows the edge of a table with a burger and wine glass, slightly blurred.

Bruce and Neil are the closest to the foreground, at the far left and right respectively. Bruce smiles slightly nervously towards Ema, holding a mustard bottle. Neil grins, spatula in hand, looking over in Ema's direction. Bruce wears a polo shirt and cap; Neil wears a vest.

The rest stand behind the grill. Ema looks mischievously excited as she squeezes ketchup onto an already overloaded hot dog. She has temporary star tattoos, braces, and a t-shirt reading, 'I told a chemistry joke...there was no reaction'. Lana looks amused beside her, holding a can of drink, dressed in a vest and jeans.

Angel and Jake stand close and gaze at each other with flirtatious smiles. Angel, wearing a blue summer dress, strokes a finger lightly against Jake's chin. Jake wears jeans and a bandana, with a cowboy's waistcoat over his bare chest. He touches a burger on the grill with his spatula, which gives off smoke in a cartoonish heart shape.

My full piece, drawn last June, for the @seasonsoflaw calendar project! This was so much fun to work on 💛

Cartoonish digital art featuring characters from 'Ace Attorney'— Phoenix Wright, Miles Edgeworth and Larry Butz— as children. The piece is based on their class trial as 9-year-olds. There's a gradient overlay, cool cel shading, and warm lighting. The background is divided into 3 uneven segments using white stripes, with 3 more stripes radiating from Miles' pointed finger comic-book style.

In the middle stands Miles. He points confidently to his left. His right hand is planted on his school desk, which spans across the bottom of the piece. He's shouting, serious and determined. One of his front teeth is missing, and he's dressed in a red blazer with yellow cuffs and a blue bow tie. A name label is safety-pinned to his blazer, written in Hiragana, with Signal Samurai stickers on it. On the desk sits a pencil and the edge of a paper sheet. It has partially-visible crayon drawings: half a defence attorney badge, scales of justice, and a pair of legs.

Above Miles' outstretched arm is a much smaller drawing of Phoenix, coloured in blues and yellows. It shows him from behind, stood crying at his desk. The background segment for this area has a blue overlay, with a very faint in-game screenshot where other students accuse Phoenix.

To the right, positioned under Miles' arm, is Phoenix, drawn to a larger scale and cut off around the chest. He's crying messily, face screwed-up. His left hand is raised in a fist to partially cover his left eye. He wears a blue t-shirt with red and yellow detailing. In the gaps between him and Miles are red coins, spilling from an empty bag for lunch money. This background segment has a yellow overlay, with more coin shapes barely visible.

To the left of Miles is a relatively smaller drawing of Larry. He grins lazily, brows raised and face freckled. He's missing a bottom tooth. His right arm is lifted as he holds his index finger under his nose; the other drapes over the back of his chair. He's swinging backwards with his knees lifted, a plaster on the left one. He wears a yellow vest, red sweatbands, and blue shorts. Suspended above his head are the trio's Signal Samurai keychains, as seen in the anime adaptation. From left to right is Miles' red charm, Larry's yellow, and Phoenix's blue. The background segment has a red overlay, with a faint anime screenshot of the Signal Samurai characters.

[2024 edit: just to clarify, the lines near edgeworth's pointed finger were supposed to mimic those specific, dramatic backgrounds in superhero comic panels. however, looking back now, I'm conscious that they could be seen as somewhat resembling the radiating rays of the rising sun flag. and I'm making this connection because I recently discovered that this symbolism has been used in some official capcom artwork (for dgs, not the main trilogy, but the point still stands, considering I've played both). I wanted to make it clear that it wasn't my aim to represent that imagery in this piece, even if it has been in some of the artwork I've seen. I'm always striving to be more critical of my past art choices, and as such, I want to be more careful in the future. I hope all is understandable and clear!]

His theme is so underrated I swear 😭 an absolute banger (hope you have a nice day too!)
