You had to turn around to keep your tears in, the last thing you wanted was for him to see how the much the news broke you. Despite him breaking up with you, you couldn’t let him see you in pain. The hopeful look in his eyes when he uttered his last words was enough to make your broken heart soften for the boy who held you entire being in his palm.

“We’re still friends, right?”

“Yeah.” You willed yourself to keep your voice steady as you whispered your answer. “We’ll always be friends.”

You could feel his eyes on your back, probably wondering if you actually meant that. You did; you just didn’t know if you could do it without feeling the pain that came with looking at his eyes.

You never realized how distant you both have become in the last few weeks. You don’t remember the last time you guys had an intimate moment; no wonder he fell out of love. You wanted to take back time to show him that all the distance wasn’t because you fell out of love. You blamed yourself for this.

After a couple minutes of silence, you heard him utter the word “Okay. I’ll come pick up my stuff tomorrow.”

As he reluctantly left your shared apartment, you stared at the framed picture of the two of you at the park while letting go of the tears you were holding as a broken sob breaks out of you.

How ironic was it that your relationship was ending where it all started; the bench at the campus park. You sat side by side, hands in your pockets as you basked in the cold wind while your now ex tried to burry himself in his coat.

It was hard to accept the fact that your 2 year relationship had just came to an end. But you also felt that is was inevitable. He had gotten scouted by an artist all the way in Paris, while you were to stay in Seoul with the firm you worked in.

At the sound of your sniffle his head turned your way to see the glistening tears in your eyes. As he reached to brush them away, he placed a soft kiss at your temple.

“Don’t worry. I’ll still be here for you.”

You know he meant it. You know he would fly right back if something bad were to happen to you. Which also made you question why he was breaking up at the first place. But you knew why. You were both stupidly against long-distance relationships, afraid it would ruin your love.

This was better. This way you wouldn’t lose your happy memories. You squeezed his hands in assurance, letting him know you were alright, and that you believed in him.

With one final look into each other eyes, you both stood up, taking slow steps away from each other. As you saw the sad smile on his face, you watched him turn his back; finally walking away.

Just like you were doing now.

It broke your heart knowing he was right. Admitting the elephant in the room was a huge step for you both; one you never thought you would take, so it took you by surprise when he did.

“It’s the best for us.”

Although you wanted to scream and throw anything you would find at him, you couldn’t. You couldn’t because you knew this on and off relationship you guys had needed to stop. It wasn’t healthy. You weren’t healthy for each other.

Despite wanting to try again, and perhaps fix your already broken relationship; you knew it wouldn’t work. The tired look in his beautiful eyes, and the defeated frown adorning his plump lips was enough to keep your mouth shut.

You walked towards him and let your arms engulf him an hug. You felt his arms return the gesture slowly; now gripping you tighter than you did him.

“For all its worth; I love you. Healthy or not. Just know that.” You whispered into his ear, letting the single teardrop fall down your cheeks.

Letting you go he gave you one final kiss on your lips. Not the heavy and consuming ones you usually shared, but a delicate one. The kiss was all you needed to know that he felt the same.

Drawing back to stare at his face as you took a step back, you smiled. “Take good care of yourself.”

Nodding at your words, you watched him walk to the door turning around to give you one last look at his face; and he smiled. “You too.”
