in fact in the development of

MS4, the company "SNK" was going through a bad time.

I don't know if you noticed it but in some missions, some scenarios are similar to previous installments.

Metal Slug 4: Completion Review + Other Thoughts

I decided to skip the current review this time and talk about how my first playthrough went. I chose Trevor this time and I honestly like him. It's a shame that Tarma and Eri aren't playable characters in this game, but beggars can't be choosers.

This is the second Metal Slug game I've beaten in one day!

Review:

To be honest, I think this entry is the easiest so far. It's still difficult, but not as much as the first game. I think it's far easier than the second game, but that's just me.

I managed to get Hyakutaro for this playthrough, which is great! I believe in Hyakutaro supremacy!

If I'll be honest, I did restart my playthrough because of a piss poor save. Luckily, I wasn't too far into the game. I'm hellbent on saving as many prisoners as I can!

I managed to recapture 36 prisoners, I have one continue, and I got a high score of 1419191! To be honest, I did lose a few recaptured prisoners because I gave up on two separate occasions during the last Mission: a group of enemies and two bomb tanks, and the final boss. However, I did my very best to recapture as many prisoners as possible! I also experienced my first continue during the final boss because I was fed up and I didn't feel like saving some more.

I do enjoy the game, but it feels like something is missing to make it a more memorable entry in the Metal Slug franchise. It has alright music, new weapons, decent bosses, and two new playable characters. However, that isn't enough to fully itch that true Metal Slug scratch. I think it lies in the level design and pixel art. It feels quite off when comparing it to the previous three games. It also has a shitty final boss in my opinion.

Opinion:

I noticed that there is a bit of replay value to this entry, so I might give it another try at some point. I would also like to say that the end credits are alright. I just wish there were as impactful as the first and third games.

I honestly don't have a lot to say for this game, which is why I skipped the current review that I did for the previous three games...

At last, I have finally arrived at Metal Slug 5. I hope I enjoy Metal Slug 5 more than what the fourth game had to offer.

Three minor Rebel Army soldier OCs

Torquil Aitken: He’s a Scottish-American Rebel Vehicle Driver with curly coppery red hair, tanned skin, freckles, dull jade eyes, a butt chin, prominent stubble, and the standard Rebel soldier uniform. He's a cheerful extrovert whose charisma stems from his fun-loving attitude and ability to make others laugh with jokes tailored to their sense of humour. As a confident individual, he exudes swagger in his step and rarely shows fear in the face of adversity, but it can sometimes tip into recklessness and overconfidence. He'll stop at nothing to protect his comrades, but can't resist charming the ladies and indulging in the occasional bout of mischief.

Extra information:

When on the battlefield, Torquil prefers to pilot the Type-4 Girida-O, but occasionally switches it up with the T-2B Melty Honey when he's feeling overly confident. The only vehicle he refuses to drive is the Type-5 Iron Iso, due to its rarity on the battlefield and the fear of destroying it too quickly.

Torquil has a tendency to break into traditional Scottish songs while driving or during downtime, much to the amusement of his fellow Rebel soldiers.

Guilherme Carvalho: He’s a Brazilian Rebel Rifleman with wavy chocolate brown hair, umber skin, two facial moles (one above his eyebrow and one near the centre of his chin), and sunburst green-hazel eyes. Due to his compassionate and nurturing nature, he has a habit of prioritising the needs of others over his own, which can sometimes lead to self-neglect. He’s a shy individual that listens actively and shows genuine interest in others' concerns, but his patience wears thin when his paranoia takes hold. He strives to remain calm in high-pressure situations, but when overwhelmed, his composure can give way to ruthless and reckless behaviour.

Extra information:

Guilherme has a long-lost sister named Geovana, who is a successful surgeon, whom he finally got to meet in person before the Great Morden War.

Guilherme carries around a worn, handmade leather journal with him, passed down from his great-grandmother. He uses it to record his thoughts, observations, and insights, often accompanied by sketches of the people and environments he encounters.

Ferdinand Hofbauer: He’s an Austrian Rebel Gatling Soldier with straight jet black hair, warm beige skin, blue-grey eyes, a scar running across his left cheek, and a finely chopped goatee. He's quite serious and overprotective of his two best friends, Torquil and Guilherme, due to a deep-seated fear of losing them, stemming from the tragic loss of his pregnant wife. He’s a by-the-book individual who carefully follows protocols and expects the same from others, maintaining a stern expression while trying to avoid distractions. He’s a strategic thinker that rarely complains, preferring to keep his true emotions hidden behind a stoic mask.

Extra information:

Ferdinand adopted a blue tortoiseshell cat, naming her Franziska after his late wife, who was a law clerk. To his surprise, his Styrian Coarse-haired Hound, Benedikt, and the cat became fast friends, alleviating his worry that they might hurt each other.

Ferdinand always carries around two photographs: one with his deceased wife from before the Great Morden War and one with his two best friends from the Rebel Army.

Metal Slug 1: Current Review

As a heads up, I'm using the Metal Pack emulator to play Metal Slug 1!

Due to my nearly non-existent game skills, Metal Slug 1 is definitely kicking my ass. Luckily, the save states are very helpful or I might have immediately stopped playing the game. So far, I would say it's exciting and rewarding yet frustrating at the same time. I know I can change the difficulty, but I think that would kill the fun and intensity of Metal Slug 1.

The controls feel a bit off, but I'm sure it's just a matter of getting used to them. I'm new to more challenging video games, but I'm willing to learn and practice! I'm hoping that my dumbass brain will cooperate with me...

I don't have the greatest patience when it comes to more difficult games. However, I think it's a good idea to challenge myself and continue on with this journey of playing Metal Slug 1 through 5. I will be taking my time as I don't want to ruin the fun for me because of my stupid impatience and lacking game skills.

I'm new to emulators, and Metal Pack is my first experience with one. It feels surreal, but I'm grateful to the person in the Metal Slug community for making the Neo Geo games accessible.
