Summary:

It took a long time after Cas died for Dean to come to the conclusion that he would have to keep on living. So he does. He builds a life after him and holds him close despite their permanent distance and learns to grow around his grief along the way.

In one version of this story, it goes like this: The grief is all-consuming and never-ending. It takes a couple years, but Dean finally symbolically lays his best friend to rest and a new life grows out of the old, continuing the unending circle of life.

In another version of this story, it goes like this: The grief is all-consuming and never-ending. Dean can’t let his best friend go and leans into old habits to try to undo what was done to him on the off chance it’ll end with the reunion he’d been dreaming of, bringing him a second chance at life.

Either way, it ends like all great love stories do: It doesn’t.
