Crystal Skull Is Actually Full Of Unexpected Shippiness!
Crystal Skull is actually full of unexpected shippiness!
Not only is there unnecessary closeness and flirting over ‘nintendos’ but Jack catches Sam when she faints and carries her to the gate and they flirt at the elevator while invisible!Daniel complains they’re not working through the night and they wear matching leather jackets to meet Grandpa!Nick and wow.
Yeah.
There’s an awful lot of shippiness in this episode.

Seriously, how close do they need to be?! That’s her knee under his arm, and his arm is totally resting against hers.
There’s no such thing as individual personal space, just theirs and everyone else’s.
Stupid!Cute!OTP.

In your opinion, what are Sam and Jack's love languages?
Oh this is a FUN question @sententiousandbellicose 😁💙💙
Honestly, because they have the whole regs mess to deal with, they've developed a *lot* of unique love languages, imho.
(LOTS of squeeing and general shippy S/J gushing coming, fyi. This got so long I’m putting it under the cut. XD)
There's the enduring language of...Jack's actual words, I'll call them Jack-isms? This includes the everlasting "Jack asks Sam to go fishing" which has the whole sublanguage (is that a word? It is now) of "fishing" 😏 but also shows Jack consistently inviting Sam into his private little world.
I mean....you can’t tell me these weren’t little “i love yous”!

(via @zedpm)

(finally fishing! via @samcaarter)
We've also got "yeah sure you betcha", “nuts", and a lot of others...
These gifsets, the Sam your Jack is showing set (more linked) by the lovely @samantha-carter-is-my-muse show this perfectly....

I mean....are they even listening to themselves? Maybe this is more like an unconscious love language. (also this is unrelated but Jack is so so handsome in that Nemesis gif guhhhhh)
And then there’s this...

My headcanon? Definitely married by Atlantis :)
Jack doesn't use Sam's phrases, but I think at some point it became obvious that Jack asks Sam questions only to listen to her voice. And she lets him, and intentionally confuses him, at least according to Affinity. Which is sort of a love language? I feel weird saying that naquadah reactor lectures are a love letter, but this is Sam and Jack we're talking about, which makes it not weird at all. 😂
There's the whole love language of "Carter" and "Sir" versus "Sam" and "Jack"...other than s1 where Jack calls her Sam a lot, it's pretty clear that their uses of their first names are "I love you". There's a lot of ways you can interpret Sam's "sir" (see: I Called Him Sir challenge 😉), but I think it's pretty obvious that "Carter" is Jack’s equivalent of "sweetheart" or something similar. I mean, everyone else calls Sam by her rank or her first name. And the way Jack drags it out is definitely *not* just calling your 2IC by her last name for propriety’s sake.
And then there's the silent communication. Their glances are immortalized beautifully in @galathea-snb 's gifsets. Those looks are where, at least in my shippy opinion, they have all the conversations we wish they had out loud. The "funny, Jack. Stop trying to make me laugh." and the "Sam, you okay?" and the "I trust you" and yes, the "I love you, don't you dare die on me." Aaaaahhh they are so PERFECT for each other.
Jack visits Sam's lab *all the time* which definitely counts as a love language, given, well, he's not a scientist. And he brings her stuff. What does that mean, "Sam I love you and I know you work so hard you forget to eat so here"? I'm not sure. Something along those lines. Or "i miss you can I just sit here and be with you?" "Sure. I missed you too, you know"
Sam and Jack seem to have also made an entire love language out of being close and *not* touching. So much so that it's so significant when they do touch. It's mostly when someone's about to die. Or is dead, or frozen. You know *exactly* what I'm talking about. 😁
Sam's smile is a love language. I feel like it's either an "I love when you do that" or "I love you" or "you're adorable". I wish we got to see more real Jack smiles, because I feel like those say the same things. Also, "I'm so proud of you". Because...*this scene*

(via @galathea-snb) And speaking of the not-touching, they’re standing so fucking close!!!
And finally, there's my personal favorite, the hugs. THE HUGS. Jack is the BEST hugger and I will die on this hill.
This gifset by @angievonasgard is my favorite in this category, but anyway...because I can’t help myself...

(via @samantha-carter-is-my-muse) Excuse me this is season 1 episode 10 Jack you are stroking you 2IC’s hair I love these idiots

(via @angievonasgard) the most underrated shippy episode and definitely a love language hug <3

(via @galathea-snb)
I am a sucker for Jack comforting Sam....God. I love Jack so much, he could have been this hard, unfeeling character but instead we get all these glimpses of him being a total sweetheart. And never more than with Sam when he drops the “CO” facade.
And of course, I’d be remiss if I didn’t include the absolute *best* S/J hug...

(via @aerynfrellingsun)
I know I’m missing a few AUs but anyway. Imo, every one of these hugs is a “I’m so glad you’re alive, I love you, I’ve got you” hug. Except maybe the first one, which is pretty early season anyway and is more of solely an “it’s okay, I’ve got you” hug.
And now, for the more headcanon-ish love languages:
I like to think they spend time alone together. On base or at places that could never be construed as a normal date (although for them, it's totally a date. Not that they think so.) On base, I love the idea of them doing paperwork together, stuff like that. Off base...well, I really want to write a fic where they either watch or attend sporting events together. As friends. Because Jack realizes he'd have no qualms about inviting a male 2IC to a game, and so he lets himself invite Sam. First, they take the whole team, in order to introduce Teal'c to sports, but he's lukewarm on them and Daniel hates sports, so over time it ends up just being Jack and Sam, yelling at the TV together or buying each other hot dogs, depending on if they're at home or at the game. No, I'm not sure what sport. Personally, my first love is football (American) but I feel like hockey or baseball are more likely. But apparently, Jack does watch football, and knows a decent bit about it, because he mentioned the Grey Cup once. So...idk.
Sorry. Sidetracked.
Other headcanons...oh! Astronomy! I have a lot of feelings about Children of the Gods, but I unabashedly *love* Jack's first scene with the telescope.

(gif by yours truly :D)
I feel like it gives us another glimpse of that inner Jack we don't see too often. I think Sam and Jack would talk about astronomy, maybe offworld, and he'd let down his guard a bit, and Sam loves him for it. Sam would talk about the stars, and her childhood dreams of becoming an astronaut, and Jack will just look at her, reveling in how beautiful she looks by starlight and loving how far she is in the moment from Major Carter. (Okay, so I maybe wrote a fic mentioning this. Sue me.) Anyway, that’s a love language, right? I don’t know.
Okay. This is very long and I'm going to stop now, before there's a whole unedited book of meta ship analysis here. S/J fandom, what am I missing? What love languages do these two have?
If you write a strong character, let them fail.
If you write a selfless hero, let them get mad at people.
If you write a cold-hearted villain, let them cry.
If you write a brokenhearted victim, let them smile again.
If you write a bold leader, let them seek guidance.
If you write a confident genius, let them be wrong, or get stumped once in a while.
If you write a fighter or a warrior, let them lose a battle, but let them win the war.
If you write a character who loses everything, let them find something.
If you write a reluctant hero, give them a reason to join the fight.
If you write a gentle-hearted character who never stops smiling, let that smile fade and tears fall in shadows.
If you write a no one, make them a someone.
If you write a sibling, let them fight and bicker, but know that at the end of the day they’ll always have each other’s back.
If you write a character, make them more than just a character; give them depth, give them flaws and secrets, and give them life.

Yup.
