Thought of the night (does it count as a drabble?)

What if in the bad sanses, Nightmare was his typical abusive and manipulative canon self when there was just Killer.

But then with the years he started realizing what mortals need and why it's kinda important to fulfill these needs, maybe he also starts to grow attached to those guys under his orders. So as he recruits Horror and Dust and then Cross, he's less and less harsh, allowing days off and other things, he's more merciful when one of them fuck up during a mission. He's not the best boss you could dream of of course, but it's manageable. You don't risk your life just by talking back.

And Killer is just sick of it. How dare Nightmare act all nice all of the sudden and with the others ? Is it a new way he found to keep them loyal? Since the abuse didn't work enough for Killer to stop seeing Color ? How dare he put a caring act when he was just purely cruel when it was just Killer by his side? What games was he playing ? He went along with it, wouldn't want to piss the boss off by questioning him too much. But now it's just so off. The things that would have gotten him in so much trouble before are almost just brushed off now. Hell, he even let Killer have cats again! That was not normal ! Dust had a tantrum the other day because of an LV rush and Nightmare just...comforted him??? When he on the other hand was stabbed in the soul at the slightest hint of instability before! Maybe Nightmare was just waiting for him to get too comfortable with this new lax attitude so he could strike even more painfully but that wouldn't work. Killer won't fall for this.

Maybe at some points he gets really pissed at yet another mistake not ending up with a harsh punishment and does end up confronting Nightmare about it. He can't take it anymore, he's even more on his guard, anticipating Nightmare to snap but that moment never comes. Nightmare was probably enjoying playing with his nerves. And Nightmare doesn't even shush him when he's complaining about it. He waits until Killer is finished to simply reply with ''things have changed'' and he can't just accept this answer. There has to be more to it. He couldn't believe Nightmare just got better as a person. That can't be right. How could he change after all he had done to him?? That wasn't fair, the others who came last to the team never had to go through what Killer has. Sure that sounded a lot like jealousy but he didn't care at this point, he was just pissed.

Out of curiosity, what exactly happened when blue went to nightmare to ask if he could join the bad sanses? Like did they fight at first? Did nightmare taunt blue prior to him asking? Like what happened?
