Raphael Immediately Stood Out To Me For Being Physically Imposing And Intimidating While Being THE Most
Raphael immediately stood out to me for being physically imposing and intimidating while being THE most friendly person among the cast. He had a lot going on for him that endeared me to him and made me decide that I would always recruit him no matter what and romance him on my GD run (You want Byleth to be female because she can romance all the lords and Rhea. I want Byleth to be female because she can romance Raphael, we're not the same)
I agree that he's a good bouncing board for other characters while still having his own personality. In most series everyone would have a positive disposition while the brooding character with tragic backstory stands out, and Raphael is the opposite of that. His positive disposition is what makes him stand out among the cast. But I do think that can also be a negative.
You see, when anyone has a support with Raphael, it stands out for THEM because Raphael lights up their mood. But when you see it from the opposite direction, that leaves Raphael with a lot of supports with similar setup, so you don't see Raphael outside of HIS comfort zone, to put it in a way (I guess his support with Ignatz would be the exception? But I... kind of dislike that support chain? to be honest?)
Though, ultimately, Raphael is just a jolly dude, and I like that. His support with Bernadetta is easily among the best and his ending portrait with Byleth is the cutest, bar maybe Petra's. And he's a good unit. I will die on this hill.
So! What's your 🔥 take for Raphael? I'm interested in hearing your overall opinion about him, really.
(feel i always gotta preface these things with a "i dunno if this is really a hot take but it's my take so yeah" sticker lmao but ye)
I really like that among the cast he's the only one (that I can readily think of) that both has a tragic backstory but it still allowed to be a simple character. Even other "simple" characters like Caspar have supports that show them going through some sort of conflict, but Raphael is just. Chill. Very chill. It makes him a really good bouncing board for characters to feel comfortable around while still managing to have a distinct personality of his own, and also lowkey makes him come off as kinda mature imo?? Like he still has his worries but he feels like he's got most things in his life figured out already. He also has massive Big Bro vibes which are a big plus
