It's Finally D-Day for Ep 11 ππ€

If you donβt want to die, you must learn how to be a jerk.
LOVE BETWEEN FAIRY AND DEVIL (2022) β EPISODE 11

My Cute Moeum π©·β‘π©·

i just want to talk about how beautiful this shot is: the panels blurring between both seokryu and seung-hyo's bodies β the soft blue background to the yearning that sweeps over the skin of their thumbs: poised just seconds away from pressing "call."
how the screen pans out: seung-hyo's arm stretching forward like a silent request to be able to reach seok-ryu: his hand a halo of hope loosely fisted behind her head.
how their palms are parallel to each other: reaching out across each of their separate spaces for the sanctity of the other person's touch. the scene is not explicit; nothing is said β but the sheer longing is so palpable you can feel it on your fingers like the bruised residue of an overripe plum.
anne carson once wrote: "desires as round as peaches bloom in me all night" β and what a perfect description it is of this moment: this blossoming wisteria of wistfulness that exists between seung-hyo and seok-ryu. this quiet ache for more β something more than friendship; something more than bickering and fighting β something that says "you're the first person i think of in the morning and the last person i think of at night."
something that declares: "you belong to me more than my own bones; and i've stopped begging for that to change."

"why is it so hard to live an ordinary life?"
seokryu's 'appa' asks a simple question β but this is what i adore most about love next door: it keeps its story & characters grounded. why IS it so hard to just be alive β why does it take so much strength to live through a regular day, (with its regular disappointments); just like everyone else? why do your dreams β small and self-effacing as they may be in the palms of your hands β require so much courage to create in real life?
love next door is an ode to the everyday β the quiet trials and treaures that a normal life holds within it. just because something is mundane doesn't make it any less magic β any less important. seok-ryu's 'appa' just wants to look after his family β be a valued member of it. seokryu herself isn't extravagant in what she wants out of life β her dream is simple too: she just wants to cook.
but just because a dream is prosaic, does it make it any less precious? any less full of longing?
love next door brings so much compassion and subtle grace to the silent experiences of a completely normal life β falling in love with your best friend and not knowing what to do about it. joining a cooking class in your thirties after years of meaningless work because finding your own passion is a miracle at any age. thinking you know a person inside out because you've witnessed every step they've taken since childhood β and then finding out that they can still take you by surprise with the complex intricacies of their behavior.
there's a gentle reverence in the way love next door handles its subject matter β as if the show itself truly believes that simplicity is sacred. that a commonplace life is worth contemplation β deep exploration; empathy, understanding.
the ordinary world is where most of us live. and that's what makes its documentation β the description of its tiny heartbreaks; the daily cuts and bruises of every-day life, the small sparks of joy, connection, sustenance β so beautiful. so necessary.
this is what love next door does so well, and with such infinite tenderness. π€
