an early doodle of my current DnD character, Tephennia Agonyx! She's half-dwarf, half tiefling; fighter; very tall; and very sweet.
She just wants to protect people and find out what happened to her mother.
The Last Goodbye
“Wow, it sure is different in here without all the fixtures and trinkets, huh?” A Pokemon walks into the empty base, joining a lone Raichu. She’s a little short for a Typhlosion, but even so, she has to crouch down to hug Gail from the side. “How’re you feelin’?”
“I’m doing okay,” Gail responds, a little dishonestly. “It’s sad knowing my cozy little home isn’t going to be my home anymore.”
“I wouldn’t be too sure about that. You never know when someone’s going to suddenly wake up in a completely different world from their own, and need a place to stay,” says Cinder. “And make friends with a hyper-active, very cool and very smart Cyndaquil who wants to run around saving Pokemon from natural disasters-- and stuff.”
Gail laughs, saying, “Just because that’s how you and I met, doesn’t mean that’s going to happen to someone else.”
“I dunno; I personally think it’s within the realm of possibility. And even if that specific thing doesn’t happen, I’ll make sure it goes to good use. You can count on me!” Cinder squeezes Gail tight in her hug, and lets her go. “Unless… you’re having second thoughts?”
Gail sighs again. “No, I’m… I’m sure about it this time. I’ve made up my mind. I’m going back to my world. Tonight. I’m doing this, and there’s nothing that can change my mind.”
Cinder gives Gail a doubtful look, brow raised. “...but…?
“But… I just keep wishing I had more time. I don’t think I’ll ever be ready to say goodbye to this world, but it has to happen tonight,” Gail answers.
“Why… why does it have to happen tonight?” Cinder whispers.
“Because,” Gail responds, “I’ve been having dreams about my old family; my old friends. They’re waiting for me. But it’s not just that.” Gail takes in a big breath, and lets it go. “That world needs me too. It’s calling me back. It’s time.” Tears trickle down the rosy fur of Gail’s cheeks, and Cinder begins to cry, too. They embrace, hugging until all their sobs quell, and their breath stills. “I… I’m going to miss you, Cinder.”
“...I’m going to miss you too, Abigail. You’ll always be my best.. best best friend,” Cinder chokes out. She releases Gail from the hug and stands up. “Alright, c’mon,” she says. “Let’s head to the plateau.”
……………………………………………………………………………………...........................
Stars twinkle longingly above the plateau-- a horribly lonely summit. Gail and Cinder stand side-by-side. All of her goodbyes are said: and she is ready.
A light falls from the sky, and inside Gail’s mind, a voice asks: “are you ready to return to your life as a human?”
“...I am.”
The light flickers and descends, quickly engulfing Gail’s form, and rises into the air. It pulses, and disappears in an instant, leaving only the twinkling night sky in its place.
Cinder stands, now alone on the plateau, and smiles. “Good luck, Gail. I know you can do it.”
