Zim’s Mission Being a Joke Is ALSO a Lie

That is, a lie The Tallest have told themselves (and the Empire) to make themselves comfortable, to the point of denial.

If the fake mission to Earth is (and always was) a prank, that means Zim’s mission–including the part where he showed up uncontroled and unannounced–was something they had control over from the start. It means they had Zim under control from the start.

There seems to be this idea floating around that The Tallest conjured up Zim’s mission as some purposeful act of cruelty for the hell of it, and that’s simply not true.

Rewatching The Nightmare Begins, I noticed that The Tallest never outright deny Zim the chance to have an Invader mission. They’re annoyed, they try to deter him, but they never actually tell him “no”.

After the gut reaction of pure horror that he’s even here (It can’t BE!) they try dismissing with him with just the obvious facts:

Zim was banished and shouldn’t be here.

Zim was not invited.

When that doesn’t work, they point out that The Great Assigning is over, and Zim missed it.

When that STILL doesn’t work, they move on to reasoning with him, going so far as to explain why Zim isn’t an Invader anymore, and remind him who ruined Operation Impending Doom 1.

At this point, they’ve already caved to an extent. Red and Purple are The Almighty Tallest. Their word is final, they don’t owe you an explanation, they don’t need to humor your questions. Most Irkens would have accepted that they were too late, accepted their luck, and left. Of course, most Irkens wouldn’t have quit being banished either. This is something Irkens just don’t DO, and it’s not in the protocol, and not something The Tallest are prepared to handle. They’ve got no clue what to do with this dude, and they’re starting to scramble.

After seeing that trying to reason with him just won’t work against Zim’s stubbornness and troll logic (I put the fires out / You made them worse!) they point out the obvious: Zim is short. Someone Zim’s height has no business with a rank this high in the first place.

When it’s clear that Zim’s not leaving without something, they throw him a bone

Zims Mission Being A Joke Is ALSO A Lie

…or a sandwich, in this case. (Willingly giving away their own snacks? Someone’s real desperate) And then try to hightail it out of there before Zim can protest, but even after all that AND a sandwich, the guy STILL just won’t LEAVE.

Zims Mission Being A Joke Is ALSO A Lie

And that’s when Red pulls a plan out of his ass thinks on his feet and gives Zim his “secret mission” on a mysterious planet nobody’s ever heard of.

When Zim accepts it, their reaction (Happy now?) isn’t amusement, but exasperated relief, perhaps even defeat. The wild goosechase to Planet Nonexistia is a last-second desperate plan to get him to go the hell away, but even then, even if it’s a lie, in the end they still gave Zim what he wanted.

They, Irk’s all-knowing all-powerful Almighty Tallest, gave in to Zim’s demands. At a public event. In front of a massive audience, broadcasted across the galaxy. Everyone who matters has seen this.

And when you’re a (fairly) new Tallest kicking off a brand new invasion after the last one was such a bust, and yet you can’t even control this tiny four foot nothing dude–who’s encoded as a food drone–that’s a bad look.

That’s a really, really bad look.

Zims Mission Being A Joke Is ALSO A Lie

Not Pictured Above: Irkens in control of a situation.

That’s also why they don’t outright tell Zim “no”, or call in the guards, shoot him in the face, or any other big display of power. Doing that shows that Zim’s gotten under their skin. It also kills any argument that they were humoring or negotiating with Zim. Aside from the fact that Zim’s a landmine in the first place, the minute they say “no” and Zim doesn’t accept it, that removes all doubt. It can’t be played off as anything besides outright defiance. While it’s still ambiguous, they can still do damage control.

While the Control Brains are running the show, The Tallest’s job is to look pretty, be respected, and give orders, and overall, Irkens don’t take well to failing their encoded jobs. Aside from the fact that being undermined can’t make the Brains too happy, that’s got to be a nasty hit to their ego. Not to mention the greater implications of Zim–who’s shown himself to be capable of immense destruction–being uncontrollable. What does that mean for Irken society? What does that mean about them? What does that mean for the shmillions that saw this whole debacle happen? These aren’t questions they want to deal with right now, thanks.

But then, after Zim’s settled into his place as an “Invader” he gets GIR: a garbage robot made from spare parts slapped together and some junk in Purple’s pocket. And Zim accepts this clearly “kind of not good” robot without much fuss.

Zims Mission Being A Joke Is ALSO A Lie

THAT’s when it gets funny. Because now the situation’s back in control.

Wait, did I say back in control? No, no, they were always in control. It was just all their big prank all along! Yeah, it was all a joke from the start, they totally had this under control the whole time. Because they’re Tallest, right? They planned this whole thing. Yep.

Zim’s mission was always just a joke. What else could it be? It’s not like they’re scared of him or anything. That’d be silly. Heh.

Yeah, Zim’s not the only one deep in denial out here.
