I Am Actually Begging Some People To Just Let Some Spaces Exist Untouched By Real-world Issues And Horrors.

myfandomrealitea - My Fandom Reality

I am actually begging some people to just let some spaces exist untouched by real-world issues and horrors.

Like I've lost count of the amount of times peaceful game or fandom servers have been ruined by people stampeding in with political rants, bitching about world issues, demanding internal activism, demanding vent channels so they can whine about their shitty parents, ect.

Like. Respectfully. Not every single space has to be inclusive of and welcoming of outside topics. The real world sucks. We don't needed to be reminded of that absolutely everywhere.

Idk if it can be considered as fandom stuff, but I really want to know:

Why children acting in films isn't discussed as something wrong to do?

Like, if it's important to fight to end child labor, why almost no one bats an eye on it?

I can assure you plenty of people bat an eye at it.

While discussions about things like child labor laws and protections in regards to underage performers may seem drowned out by subjects like the SAAG strikes and the crew-company strikes and rights actions right now, child labor laws and protections for underage performers is still very much a prominent topic in the industry, especially as more and more past-child-actors come forward with their stories.

While we are far from a perfect state regarding the protection of child actors and their obligations and abilities within the industry, we have also seen several improvements and changes. Restrictive changes to how many hours they can work within a certain timeframe, changes to how they are represented and advocated for and changes to conflicts between performing and education are all things we have seen in the last decade.

Backstage.com - Child Actor Laws NNCEE - British Child Performer License Library of Congress Blogs - A History of Child Actor Laws

I don't view children being employed as actors as inherently a "wrong thing to do." However I absolutely and firmly acknowledge that child acting is a fucking minefield of exploitation and expectations. We are absolutely nowhere near a point where we can say that the majority of our activism for child actors has been fulfilled.

Often, expectations for child actors fall victim to the same pressure and demands of the entire Hollywood industry; churning out content as fast as possible on minimum cost. Crews are pushed to work 90 hour weeks, actors are pushed to work 14+ hour shifts, deadlines are made as tight as possible. The issues many child actors face are not necessarily exclusive to underage performers; they are broader issues faced by employees and workers within the industry as a whole.

There are still many groups and individuals campaigning for better protections and quality of treatment and advocacy regarding children in the film and performance industries, however. And like with any cause there are always ways you can support them to help further the cause. I suggest looking up the child performer laws in your area and seeing where you can lend aid.

at the end of the day, when you are in a server you follow its rules, if it doesn't allow drama, find somewhere that does

This logic means people actually have to think for themselves and let go of their entitlement and I can safely say for a select group of people that is simply not going to happen.

According to the various tag and reblog responses on the post, incredibly. It is like asking them to push the stone up the mountain.

Omg that post. (About not every space needing to be political) The amount of people who need every single little "what if this" "what if that" explained to them. It hurts. You cannot account for every single exception or situation and I'm damn well sure they know that but God. They want everyone to hold their hand. Stay strong. You got this.

I'm in a couple of servers that refuse to have dedicated vent spaces and they're very fun to be in and don't have drama. It works.

Yeah, the amount of people who are reading it and immediately launching into accusations of perpetrating racism and bigotry is... Concerning, to say the least. It just goes to show how far we've been pushed into believing that everything is offensive and that unless we're 24/7 "fighting bigotry" that we are the problem.

At this point I've stopped actually attempting to reason with any of them. If they're unwilling to read the literal thousands of other responses detailing why these spaces are viable and necessary, they are simply unwilling to acknowledge they are wrong. Its memes and eye rolling from here on out.

I wish people understood that anyone remotely smart does not get news from social media posts. If you're mad at someone posting about their blorbos instead of the news ask yourself why you put random online people that you don't know on the same pedistal as verified journalists and what that says about your susceptibility to propaganda. Most people who harass those who are "being silent" usually ignore the vast majority of other world issues anyway. I say all this as someone who isn't privileged and posts both about my fandoms and politics on my blog.

"If you don't acknowledge inequality and bigotry and suffering in every single moment of your life you're a horrible racist bigot that perpetrates genocide!"

Meanwhile the majority of the time "exposure" is the literal only activism these people are doing. I donate and sign petitions and boycott and I can promise you the literal last thing I want to do when I'm in a server about monsterfucking is wave my moral superiority flag and force people to talk about dead children and mass murder. I'm capable of doing both without having to force them to intertwine.
