Everything about him is hard. The way his brows furrow when he watches something that piques his interest, the hard lines of muscles in his body. Amongst all the sinew, it’s easy to be captivated. You find yourself tracing each detail - the curves smooth texture of his skin, and the way it looks tight against him. There is no softness in his touches, even when he’s setting - you shouldn’t mistake precision with something as delicate as softness.

He doesn’t look at you with any fondness, even if you look at him that way. You don’t mistake the warmth in his fingers when they reach for yours in the darkness of winter mornings. You don’t ask him if he likes you, because his answer leaves your resolve shaking like autumn leaves. It’s hard to love him. He’s hardened all around except the tips of his fingers which kiss plastic and make magic happen. You’re just you, and he’s just him - and you happen to be lucky enough to exist in the same space.

Even if the cobalt blue in his eyes were to look at you, there is no guarantee they would look after you. You can’t know they would trace the outlines of your shadow in the fidgety way a lover might. If you grow sick in the decades after tomorrow, would he hold your hand and kiss each knuckle like you’ve always wanted.

Is that what you want anymore?

The sun is rising in the west in the morning. It’s all gentle, the darkness being washed away from your sight as the moments pass slowly. You are falling harder as you watch the snow settle on the tip of his dark lashes, the way his nose crinkles in the cold. He is precise in his beauty too - the clean lines of his jaw, the bridge of his nose, the stray hairs on his head that still fall so effortlessly. You should go soon - you have to catch the train and he has to make it to practice.

It’s as if the cold has robbed you of your breath, when you feel his fingers reach for yours in the cold. It’s all encompassing and tough - the way each finger is so purposeful as they curl around yours. You can feel his heartbeat in his wrists, through his hands. It’s loud, messy, but still hardened. You’re staring at him now, looking into his eyes for answers to questions neither of you have ever asked.

“I love you,” tighter - he holds your hand a little tighter “Sorry.. i didn’t say it sooner,”

It still isn’t delicate. But maybe there is comfort in the sturdiness that is his love. Maybe that sturdiness is what offers you the security to smile fondly and stare at the ground, letting loose tears fall and fall on the icy blacktop. The sturdiness that allows to reply

“I love you too, Tobio,”
