We are here to honor the life and legacy of a remarkable woman, Janice Burgess. Born on a cold winter’s day, March 1, 1952, in the lively neighborhood of Squirrel Hill, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Janice embarked on a journey that would leave an indelible mark on the world of children’s television.

Her journey was not unlike the ascent of a mountain, starting at the base with humble beginnings at a local TV station, WQED, and reaching the summit at Nickelodeon. Her path was steep and challenging, but her determination and talent were her climbing gear, propelling her upwards.

Janice’s most notable contribution to children’s television was the creation of The Backyardigans, a show that has touched the hearts of countless children, including many of us here today.
