Basically yugi and atem are twins, with atem being the reincarnation of the Pharoah atem. As a baby atem has some memories of his past life but fade as he grows eventually he only has a vague sense that he's forgotten something important. As for Yugi he's still his old self but he still wishes for fiends like in original plot but instead of being lonely all the time he has his bro at home.

Visually the both look alike however atem has red in his hair where as yugi has purple. Atem is slightly taller than yugi and lanky, he also wears makeup specifically eyeliner. Yugi on the other hand is short like in the original material.

Atem was a menace to society, getting into fights and wrecking people for fun. However if some poor fool has a death wish and pick on yugi, atem makes sure they don't talk or look at yugi funny. However they end up having to attend different schools cuz of atems violence this puts into perspective all of the chaos he's caused. Yes he wanted to protect yugi but in turn he's isolated yugi from everyone in school. Yugi doesn't blame him and understands he was trying to be there for him but he does think he needs some time for him to work on himself so that atem isn't so violent to others.

Yugi is sent to live with his gramps at the game store, and atem stays with their mother. yugi visits his brother on the weekends and stay in touch with each other. And if you've watched yugioh season 0, then the plot is relatively the same with some obvious differences.

Yugioh Twin au shenanigans:

As kids the twins shared a bed room, however due to limited space they had to use bunk beds. This is how things were kept even when they moved into a bigger home.

But one night Atem fell from his bed, and his was top bed. You see dear reader, he was an active sleep mover. He'd kick and punch in his sleep. And instead of choosing the the bottom bunk he insisted on the top one because he thought it made him cooler.

But now you might be thinking, how did he manage to fall off if there's a rail to prevent this from happening? Simply put it, he climbed over it. Yugi woke up to find atem on the floor, red in face from either him trying not to cry or from the fall. Either way the beds were unmounted and turned into regular beds from then on.

As I mentioned before the twins moved and with it came adjusting to the new environment. Yugi in particular was bit of hassle. He was ok in the day, he'd act like his old usual self but as soon as nightfall hit and he'd to go to sleep he'd loose it. Yugi is by no means a screamer but he avoids sleep by asking everyone if they want to play a game or solve a puzzle, atem always jumps on the bandwagon before realizing yugi is just doing it to avoid sleep. Atem tries to understand what's going on but yugi doesn't tell him or anyone.

Eventually atem confronts yugi in the middle of the night and asks him what's wrong. When atem looks at yugis face he sees that he as big dark bags under his eyes. In truth yugi has been having nightmares where atem leaves into shadows and never comes back leaving yugi alone and helpless. These shadows had eyes and would whisper things in a different language that yugi couldn't understand but atem did for some reason and would walk into the shadows.

Atem sadden by this comforts his brother and reassures him that he would never leave him, he couldn't. Atem gives him one of his bracelets one of a matching set and says that no matter what he'll be there for him. No matter how far, no matter what time he'll be there for him, promise.

This however does lead to him becoming more protective of yugi. But that's a story for another night.
