“honey, have you seen the chili pepper? i can’t seem to find it anywhere, and i could’ve sworn i left it in the spice rack.” 

rummaging through the cabinets and inner countertops of your kitchen, you bustled your way towards the stove—where a large pot of flavorful rice noodles lay in boiling hot water, accompanied by two pans of steamed pork rolls—your favorite meal to make, and jean kirstein’s favorite meal of yours to eat. 

“oh!” you exclaimed, finally spotting container in the mess of your cooking project. the only problem? it was nearly two shelves above your arm span, and there was no way you were going to be able to step up onto the island with all of the sparse utensils laying around…no matter! you can’t say you failed if you never try—which is why you’d begun to hop up and boost your weight—until a familiar arm gripped the inner-side of your torso. 

nuzzling your neck, he easily reached upwards and took a hold of the jar, pressing a soft kiss to the exposed skin and spinning you around to face him. “this what you need?” he smirked, twirling it before your eyes in a mockery of your stature. it wasn’t your fault that it was out of your reach, he was practically a giant! “next time you need help, baby—just ask. i’m always at your beck and call, anyways.”

jean leaned down, capturing your lips in his and pressing you against the light wood bar. a blush rose on your cheeks, unable to hide the undying attraction that you still held for your boyfriend of so many years, even if he was unbearably annoying at times. “as much as i love this,” you admitted between kisses. laughing softly at his pouting expression from the loss of touch. “i’m trying to make us dinner, handsome—and you’re rudely interrupting.”

“you call this interrupting?” he whispered, moving from your mouth to your already attended to neck, and inflicting his favorite purple marks into your skin. the noises you let out were music to his ears, his favorite sound that he could listen to for hours on hours—as it’d been proven last night and the nights before. “alright then, smart ass” jean stepped back, leaving you to your duties as head chef of the household. 

“but don’t be surprised if you have another interruption, later. perhaps before bed.”

jean, who pulls you into his chest with a sweet kiss to the top of your head. a gentle murmur of, “what’s wrong, angel?” has you spilling your guts, telling him everything that’s been troubling you.

jean, who, after hearing you out, just holds you tighter, strong arms caging you into the warmth of his body and making you feel so safe and protected. a thousand little sweet nothings and encouraging words are whispered into your ear, conveying just how proud jean is; how much he truly loves you.

jean, who just wants to cuddle you ‘till the world ends, ‘till your tears dry and ‘till your frown is turned upside down. luckily you don’t object.

jean, who admires how brave and strong you are. you handle everything with ease and a smile on your face, so these bad days absolutely kill him inside. all he wants is for you to feel better, going to any length necessary to help you along the way. you’re his other half, the most important person in the whole wide world. tonight alone is proof of that.

jean, who’s still holding you long after the lull of the tv has lured you to sleep. and it’s in that moment, with a lingering kiss to your temple as his eyes drift shut, that he mutters those three little words you so long to hear; i love you.
