Where my grumpy introverts at? by umlautpronouncer
hello! here are some neurodivergent hacks i've learned bc i'm neurodivergent and it's disability awareness month so i guess it kinda fits!
some of these might sound silly but they really helped me
• if you are uncomfortable stimming in public places like at the mall, at school, at work and have some hand stims, just wash your hands very often, bc you can do flappy hands and stims like that and ppl will just think you're shaking off the excess water from washing your hands
• if you have comfort clothes like pijamas or some fluffy pants that aren't really acceptable in public or you're uncomfortable just going around in your comfortable pijamas outside, get yourself some huge wide pants and a hoodie and you can totally hide your fluffy comfort clothes underneath the 'normal' clothes, and noone can tell that you have it on if u won't told them and u can be comfortable the whole day, not having to touch denim or normal clothes with your skin (this may not really work for the summer and hot days tho, but in the winter?you're warm and comfortable)
• this one works only for summer and sunny days - fucking sunglasses. eye contact, gone, noone can tell you're not looking at them. resting your eyes bc overtimulating from the bright and colors - noone can tell! you can just go ahead and take a nap in there if you want to bc guess what, they can't see your eyes!
• okay this might be not accessible to a lot of you but other ND friends. if you can be friends with your fellow NDs, do and value those friendships - you can not mask to minimize burnout, you can not focus on keeping eye contact, they will understand more if you start ranting about your hyperfixations, they can help you remember things you have a hard time remembering. i have a friend that has ADHD and she once said to me that she feels so much better around me bc she can just say "i'm sorry, i can't focus on this thing you're showing me right now, can we come back to it later?" and get understanding instead of weird looks and ppl thinking that what they are telling is not important to her.
• i often forget to eat or drink so this one is important to me - pain tells you your bodys needs. your stomach hurts and makes noises? you gotta eat, your head hurts? you might want to drink a glass of water, your jaw hurts? unclench it!, your shoulders hurt? check if you're muscles are relaxed or are you flexing every muscle in your body for two hours without realizing
• one thing that helped me find things i lost around my house when i literally just had them in my hand, like keys, phone and stuff like that when i already scanned the entire surface i could leave it on - don't look for the thing! and i don't mean at all, you might need those keys, just don't looks specifically for keys. you might expect keys to look a certain way and when they don't, it's hard to spot them. instead, think about for example what color are the keys, what color or shape is the thing you're looking for, and then scan the room again, but looking for anything that color
• if you have sensory issues, and are particularly uncomfortable with sweat, but still want to exercise, try doing small exercises in the shower/bath. i know it might sound crazy but having a small silicone covered weight in my shower helped me a lot, bc when you're already wet, or washing, you won't feel the sweat
• idk if it's that much of a hack, just something that I find interesting in myself. i have trouble motivating myself to do anything, and no motivational words work for me. but anti-motivational words do. you tell me I can do this, I won't. a straight white man tells me I can't do it - I do it in two seconds, better and faster then anyone else, while staring him dead in the eyes. just a helpful tip - USE THEM FOR YOUR OWN BENEFITS! YOU TELL ME THAT I'M TOO WEAK TO DO IT, WELL GUESS WHAT, YOU JUST UNLOCKED MY SUPER STRENGHT
so yeah I hope those can help someone out there, remember you don't own anyone shit, you deserve to feel comfortable wherever you go and we will work as hard as we can so you all can be yourselves out in public without being embarrassed or laughed at
feel free to add and happy disability pride month!
