There is a method by which Betazoid telepathic "speech" can be recorded and reproduced. Doing so also captures a lot of the baseline information about the speaker that Betazoids typically feel during psychic communication such as age, sex, emotional state, and relative physical position to the listener.

Because of this, listening to a psychic recording is deeply distressing to a Betazoid. The reproduced information is more difficult to filter through mentally than organic conversation and is often cluttered by the presence of other individuals near the equipment at the time of recording. Similar to the results of direct stimulation of the brain, even a Betazoid aware that there is a telepathic record playing can find it difficult to believe that there isn’t a speaker present.

Other telepathic species don't have this problem with telepathic recording because most can't perceive a conversation's "metadata" and only parse conscious communication.
