I was wondering how you pick the color palettes for your drawings? They’re always so beautiful and I was wondering. Also any advice on getting god at digital painting/watercolor type stuff? My art always looks so flat and I just don’t know how to even start trying to change that.

I usually start from background colors and then match the other colors in the pic to them! I do it very instinctively so it’s hard to explain buut I usually try to either use colors in a similar “family” of hues which is various shades of similar colors, or have warmer colors + colder colors in the same palette and try to find that midway that makes them go together, there’s some use of complementary colors and other stuff as well!

and I try to keep the color palette centered around a certain group of colors, for example if I have to add other details to the pics or just anything in general, usually I’ll pick something related to the colors already present in the picture, rather than an entirely different color that wasn’t present before, and a color palette usually tends to revolve around 3-6 main colors and in between shades

thank you so much! and hey u can do cool coloring using solid blocks of colors as well :o there’s a specific kind of skill in making something look good using just flat colors + lineart and minimal amount of shading in solid blocks if one can learn how to make that work! (I don’t get around doing that much myself lol)

but if you want to try out more painterly stuff almost every brush in SAI is pretty blendy/painterly and a lot of them in CSP as well, you usually start with the base color and then go over it with one or more colors so that they get blended, u can do that either on the same layer as the flat color or on other layers!
