Something about seeing a girl wrap a protective arm around their friend’s waist in a crowd just gets them going. It’s how you guide your friends with a hand placed gently on their lower back or around their shoulder, the way that a boyfriend would, or how you offer to grab their bags on the way to class from lunch if they can’t make it back on time, it all makes him wonder whether he should become more like you as well- more like a man, than a boy.

It’s about him trying so hard to out-chivalry you, but always failing to be the one to hold the door open to a classroom, or to lend umbrellas, and pens, and notes, and tissues, to anyone who needs it. It’s about how all you need is a glance at someone’s face, to know to divert uncomfortable topics with ease, almost as naturally and quickly as breathing. It’s about you, somehow, treating your friends, and him, more like girlfriends than he has ever treated anyone.

One of those days, during a lovely, school formal dinner, he asks you why? Why be the man? Why not leave the chivalry to guys like him, and reap the benefits? And all you do is smile cheekily, and reply, “They need to know what being treated right looks like.” Your suit seems to glow a little when you respond, a glass in hand as you lean back on your chair, and he can’t help but wonder if you’ve ever been treated with the same kindness and chivalry that everyone else receives from you.

It’s the way that even at formal dinner, as he musters up the courage to ask for your hand to dance, you beat him to it, extending a gloved hand to his and tilting your head invitingly. It’s the way that he takes it, like a princess, and the two of you waltz on the dance floor, his hands on your waist and yours on his shoulders. It’s the way that he tells you he wants to be more like you, and that he wants to be the one to hold your back in a crowd, to grab your bag for you when you’re running late, to lend you umbrellas, and tissues, and pens, whenever you forget your own. It’s the way that he looks at you, like you’re the epitome of what it means to be a good man- a man that he will become so you too can know how it feels to be treated right.
