Coach Carl’s office was laden with trophies. With gold medals. With accomplishment and triumph. On the walls were framed photos of the many, many teams Carl had had the honor of coaching over the years.

The smiling faces of these children haunted the stout man who sat before him.

“Listen, they’ve well figured out what’s been happening here, Carl.”

Carl gave Terry a pointed stare from his desk. “If you say nothing, they won’t know nothing, now will they? And who’d believe a little kid, anyways?”

Terry raised his arms in mock-defense. “If these parents were any good, they’d ought to at least investigate you. I know I would.”

Carl stood and slammed his hands down on the desk. The look in his eyes was almost predatory as he said, “Terry, don’t you get smart with me. You’d be a whole lot smarter to shut that filthy trap of yours. Unless you’d want me to give the ol’ wife a buzz?”

The man towering over Terry leered, “I’m sure Martha would like nothing more than to confirm her suspicions about your foxy little receptionist...Jenny, wasn’t it?”

Carl had Terry backed into a corner, both metaphorically and physically.

Terry averted his eyes from Carl to the door just out of reach. “Alright, Carl, alright. I’m sorry. I won’t say nothing to nobody.”

A smile stretched unbearably wide across the man’s face. “Good, good. That’s all I needed to clarify. Now, Terry, get out of my office before you’re out of a job and have to pay Martha’s alimony.”

Terry made his exit quick, and shut the door with a slam. If Jenny had been a little quieter, then he’d be able to tell the media about the things Coach Carl did. Without fear of repercussion, of course. During all of those extra youth practices, in the darkest depths of the locker rooms, even in Carl’s own office! If the world knew just how animalistic, how sick this all star coach really was, then, maybe, just maybe, Terry himself would be able to take Carl’s place as head coach.

He could imagine it now: Head Coach Terry!

If only...if only...if only...

PREV I NEXT

———————————————————————————————————

Your only response is to blink at the boy in front of you.

Did you hear that right?

You do not know how to respond to this. Was this a cruel prank? Or did he want to go out with you to ensure that you don’t expose him?

The line behind him keeps getting longer as he stares at your face, an eager expression on his face. His hands are gripping the counter, long fingers clenched on the ceramic.

After the long day at college and an even longer shift at the cafe, you can only give him a lame response.

Our relationship is one of love and hate,

One day you care so deeply,

The very next you’re a flake.

You speak so, so much,

But tell me nothing at all.

You’re unreachable,

Surrounded by iron-clad walls.

You are without aim,

And have so little ambition,

But your creativity is marvelous.

Your smile is contagious.

You’re a little too honest,

With everyone but yourself.

You’re in dire need of a reality check,

Stop letting others put you down.

You’re worth more than you know.

You could do anything you desire,

But you fear the unknown.

A world of choices,

Yet you’re undecided.

Is your fear of failure,

Why you feel so daunted?

The calluses on your hands,

From writing, writing, and writing.

The aches in your being,

From everyone else you’ve been serving.

You got no time for yourself,

Darling, isn’t that unnerving?

It’s your life that you are living.

Our relationship is one of hate and love,

Regardless of the mixed feelings,

You should reach for the stars and above.

Queen of the Gods

A man comes to the temple,

Before a statue of great height.

She’s regal,

Doe-eyed,

Eerily life-like.

Surrounded by peacocks,

Their feathers glow blue and green in the night.

The man tells the sacred deity about his dear wife.

Their marriage,

He tells her, had known nothing but strife.

“We were promised to each other,

We hadn’t any say,

Unless we wanted to be casted out,

Someplace, far, far away…

We married not for love,

Not for choice!

It pains me to say,

She desires freedom,

Oh goddess, oh Hera, is divorce the only way?”

He offers a drachma to the fire burning oh so bright,

The flames dance and spin to the tune of the wind.

The man before the statue bows down,

And from the statue, these words flutter out,

“Divorce is an option, oh it is, indeed.

However,

You don’t seem to see,

That women aren’t allowed to be independent of men.

Your wife has no rights to property,

Nor to vote at her own liberty.

So this is what I recommend to thee,

Talk with your weary wife,

Whose eyes wander to the great beyond.

Explain to her the consequences of divorce,

And how the world will cast her down under,

Heedless of her say and power.”

The Queen of the Gods,

Hera has spoken,

As always, abiding by her duty.

Helping women and fixing marriages,

Overseeing the children,

All the while her husband,

King of the Gods,

Oh mighty Zeus,

Has been sleeping with all of Olympus.

She wishes to leave her poor-excuse for a husband,

With all of her might,

However,

Hera knows that without Zeus,

Her noble title will be lost.

So she remains bound by holy matrimony,

As the Queen of the Gods,

And unfortunately, Zeus’s wife.

To Trick a God

The god was as wild as the wind,

Nobody knew what he’d do next.

Not even him himself.

Hermes was always out and about,

In search of adventure.

And without a doubt,

The young god,

Was invested in many projects.

His favorite perhaps,

Was one of his firsts,

You see,

It was quite the infamous conquest.

The cattle was Apollo’s,

And Hermes a mere child,

To him,

The opportunity was nothing but golden!

Within the pasture,

Hermes guided the herd of cows to walk backwards.

It’d fool anyone who’d follow the trail,

Making it all the more funnier.

He’d fashioned a pair of hooves himself,

To conceal his very own footprints.

It was the perfect crime,

There was no evidence!

Apollo infuriated,

Went to Zeus demanding justice.

Zeus thought of Hermes,

Whose eyes had always twinkled with mischief.

He summoned the boy,

And demanded Hermes to apologize.

He did,

And in exchange for the cows,

Hermes gifted Apollo the lyre.
