“People were supposed to change to their environments but Jackie was still exactly the same person as she always was, and maybe the same went for Natalie. That nothing was new, that this experience, living and surviving, wasn’t enough to alter them. That the rabid, hateful thing inside of her was completely natural, just a dog that knew how to bite, teeth that had the reflex to snap shut.

The water stole the white moose further beyond reach. The darkness had such a long way down to go and Natalie was also being pulled in, so cold that it all seemed like a fire. It began swallowing her, both that chill and heat, and it was enough to stop feeling all that anger. I’m not a dog, her mind sluggishly thought to the dark world beneath the ice.
