Disabled people have to regularly attempt things that they can't do or that have no chance of working, hoping that once in a while they'll get lucky. And they often have to put more effort than the average person into anything they do.

When a disabled person says "I can't do that" or "that won't work", it's not negativity. It's not refusal. They're most likely still going to try it anyway and put more effort into it than the average person. They're most likely already doing that. Saying "yes you can" or "just try it" is not helpful or reassuring. It's dismissive. What they hear is "About this problem that you're burning yourself out trying to solve, I deny that it even exists. Now, on top of already burning yourself out trying to solve it yourself, you must also go out of your way to convince me to even believe that it's happening, and I will try my hardest to find any excuse to not believe you. Either that, or you can continue to suffer in silence while I pretend I helped you and while I wonder why you never ask for help."

Folks have got to understand that they probably aren't messed up by some Secret Big Trauma that they just can't remember; but rather by a million tiny microtraumas that they do mostly remember but don't even register as traumatic because nobody actually understood that these things would cause trauma, much less stack on each other over the years.

disability advocacy went wrong when it became about inspiration porn and “differently abled” and savants. its incredible that that guy with no legs did a triathlon but your sister with no legs will not and she doesnt need prosthetics or five hour training days to deserve respect and compassion and accommodations. its incredible that that autistic guy can look at a city from a helicopter for an hour and then draw the entire detailed skyline from memory when he lands but your autistic friend cannot and they dont need to have a special Autism Power to deserve respect and compassion and accommodations.

activism framed around “we are just as CAPABLE” means that when people genuinely are less capable they are left behind. activism framed around “we are just as WORTHY” is fundamental to radical compassion.

"i hate microlabels" yeah i also kind of dislike the idea of putting ourselves and our identities into very specific boxes, i think it can be really isolating- ohh wait you mean you think they're invalid. ohh no that's not the way to look at it. killing you
