there were absolutely people who used this whole fiasco as an excuse to be racist to ryan and steven and that should not be ignored. but it should also not be used as an excuse to dismiss all the genuine criticism of watcher and the way they handled this.

fans have every right to be angry about this, and watcher is not owed forgiveness or a second chance by anyone. especially not by the creators whose content was used by watcher with no reimbursement only to be slapped in the face by this. or by their fellow creators on youtube, who they insulted by claiming to be better than.

finally, don't forget that ryan, shane, and steven are all adults AND human beings. they don't need to be babied or treated as untouchable figures incapable of taking genuine criticism and/or dealing with the consequences of their own actions. and they also don't deserve to be harassed or insulted as a result of this mistake.

this was a bad business decision based in classism that caused real hurt. it should be treated as such. it shouldn't be treated as just an oopsie to be brushed under a rug or as a purposeful assault with no possible fixing. it should not be life ruining for absolutely anyone involved. and absolutely nothing is ever an ok excuse to be racist.

They acknowledged that they made a mistake, made the wider context more clear, and addressed basically all of the criticisms brought forward by the community as far as I know.

Anyone who already subscribed to the streaming service who no longer wants it gets a refund.

Patrons get a free subscription to the streaming service.

The service now only offers early, ad-free episodes that will still be released on YouTube.

They acknowledged the insensitivity of the original pitch and how the price is not something that everyone can afford.

THIS is how you respond to backlash, especially this widespread. Take time to collect your thoughts, take the criticism into account, and change your actions going forward.
