Writers! Read this!
Hi, there! Just dropping in to tell you to be proud of your successes!
I have this little demon that I can’t get off my back, and he’s always telling me that what I’ve achieved is not enough and we need MORE. And I thought to myself, I bet some of you have little demons, too.
So you tell that tiny bastard to shut right up.
Did you write today? GREAT! Did you do some plotting or character work this week? FANTASTIC! Did you submit something to a magazine or an agent or a publisher? AMAZING! THAT’S AMAZING!
Did you even just think about writing? Just for a second? WAY TO GO!
While it might not feel like it, I think it’s these baby bricks that eventually build something bigger. It’s putting that positive energy out into the world that sets the dominoes to falling.
A brick at a time. A step forward. You deserve to be proud of every single one!
Hey, do you know that feeling of hitching up a long skirt so you don’t fall on your face when walking upstairs, and then you immediately become a wretched yet resolute Jane Austen character? It’s a universal thing, right?
I always wanted to write a story, but once I start, I abandon it two days later. I really hate this. Do you have any advice for this?
Find your motivation to write. Is it because there’s a story no one else but you can tell? Is it because you find writing appealing but nothing more? If you do want to write, create a schedule and set a goal. You don’t have to reach 5k of words everyday, but a goal you feel comfortable with, you can start with a small amount of words and then increase it. Find your style, your voice as a writer, the story you’d like to tell, the characters fit to that story, and so on. If you don’t feel like writing a long story, try short ones. Try different things, character charts, answering questions about the world you’re creating, and try writing for more than two days. And it’s completely okay to abandon writing if it isn’t for you, don’t force yourself into something you won’t enjoy.Lia
from your friendly neighborhood librarian:
all books are good books. you are not a “lesser reader” if you only read manga or comic books or a “better reader” for reading academic heavy texts.
reading is reading no matter what it is, be it a graphic novel, a romance, a classic, an audiobook, a picture book, a cookbook, fanfiction, fucking whatever, read what makes you happy
reading is supposed to be fun and don’t let elitism sap any joy out of it
Take breaks, drink water, go to sleep, spend some time out doors, rest your eyes, go do something else!
It’s ok to have your me-time! You can always come back to whatever your working on, and even better if you come back with a clear mind!
Put. Yourself. First.

Good luck on the finals grind everyone! Sometimes you have to push yourself hard to be successful, but remember to take care of yourself as much as you can. I know I work myself too hard sometimes, and it just negatively affects my health and my output.
