Jokublog did originally give Dream and Nightmare the ability to visit dreams and interact with the dreamer! But she removed it after being accused of stealing the idea from another AU which centered around interacting within dreams. Some of the early fandom was rabid about idea 'stealing', I think. [Commentary on drama has been excluded from my brief explanation.]

If you want to know more about canon Dreamtale, I really recommend watching Mat002's video on it. It's in spanish, but auto translating captions are available [at least for me]. It's an eight hour behemoth of a lore-drop, I haven't even finished watching it myself yet, and he's working on a part two.
