Nobody:
Me: The egg episode of RGU is not just another episode of comic relief where Anthy ker-pranks Nanami but also a sign that Nanami is breaking from Touga’s control. The egg can be seen to represent one of two things- menstruation from the fact that it is an egg, and how Nanami worries that it’s weird before obsessing how other girls have gotten it before her, or a gay awakening seeing her rose tinted view of Utena and how she turns red being touched by her in the episode, plus the out of nowhere “Homosexuality is bad” talk Touga gives her in the middle of the episode. Perhaps a mix of the two. These two things are both associated with growing up and becoming more mature and in the case of a gay awakening, sure of yourself. Things that take control away from Touga. If you go with a lesbian reading, she wouldn’t even be attracted to him, thus taking away the power of his grooming. Hence why he doesn’t want her to have the egg and she feels forced to abandon it. In the end however, she chooses the egg over Touga, in the process also choosing a living being over Touga, which could be seen as a major step forward since the drowned cat, choosing to salvage the animal that came between her and her brother instead of smother it because she’s decided it is more important. The episode ends with the egg being cracked and her crying in despair, but it could also be a symbolic reference to “the worlds shell breaking” and Nanami having come upon revolution.
