For people who think Shane Dawson doing blackface is "no big deal"

When I was a CHILD, I watched those videos. All the time.

My friend and I decided to reenact those videos. Blackface and all. We called ourselves "LaQuisha and ShaNayNay" which were the names Shane used in his videos. We are about 9 or 10 years old at this time. We thought it can't be racist, Shane Dawson isn't racist! We have black friends! We're just playing around! He's an adult so he must be right!

And that's the thing, it wasn't just blackface he did. He spread EXTREMELY harmful stereotypes about black women. He made fun of their names, their hair, their voices, AAVE, everything. Kids and teens watched those videos. Do you know how dangerous that is????

I have spent years unlearning my racism (and I'm still doing my best to find any internalized shit that I'm not realizing is there) and I look back at that and I just feel.....so gross.

Shane Dawson influences the people who watch him. I had never thought about dressing up as a black woman and doing that racist shit until I saw those videos. We wanted Shane to see our videos so he would like us, too.

We were kids who wanted to impress an adult, thinking "this is what adults do to be funny", and not questioning it much while being raised in the midwest around literal KKK towns. In our minds, not hating black people and having a black friend was "super progressive". Unfortunately a lot of people around here still have that mindset.

"But why would you admit to doing blackface when you were younger?"

Because I'm not Shane Dawson, I'm not gonna deny it, I'm not gonna act like it was okay. To pretend that I was a sweet little innocent girl who's never been the slightest bit racist is an insult to POC. How can you unlearn racism if you don't look back on prejudices you've had throughout your life and your actions due to it?

Shane Dawson is a fucking idiot and I HATE that I watched his videos as a kid.
