Break The Ice

a hand slammed on top of the wooden table where sunghoon’s head rested atop his arms. he slowly looked up, already knowing who it would be since you were the only one who ever approached him.

“hi hoonie!”, you beamed at him in excitement. your nickname for him made his eyebrows furrow slightly, but he didn’t let his annoyance completely show on his stoic face.

“it’s early morning, why are you so happy?”, he grumbled.

you completely ignored his unenthusiastic response and placed a brown disposable box in front of him.

“i made some simple fried rice, i was running a bit late today.” you smiled and slid the box towards him when he didn’t react, “i hope you don’t mind!”

when he realised that you weren’t going to move if he didn’t take the box, he sighed and stuffed it inside his schoolbag. your smile widened at his gesture but immediately fell when you looked at your watch.

“oh no i’m running late for my next class.” you waved at him, “i’ll see you at lunch!”

sunghoon’s eyes followed your figure as you pushed past the people crowding at the entrance of the classroom and dashed off. his eyes glazed over in thought as he contemplated about why you even put up with him everyday, afterall you were a really jolly person who’s loved by everyone. and he, he was just loner with no emotions everso.

you both had met each other at the beginning of high school. you had approached him when you found him sitting alone at lunch on the first day. you mistook it for him being lonely but he pushed himself away from everyone on purpose. since then you’ve always been around him, constantly playing the part of a friend he didn’t ask for but secretly appreciated. he still remembers how upset you were when you found out he started skipping lunch in senior year, so you started making lunch for him everyday.

he sighed once again when his phone’s screen lit up with your text message.

y/n:

hiii

i’m so sorry i won’t be able to visit you during lunch today TT

i have the club meeting for robotics

enjoy your lunch<333

and don’t forget to recycle your lunchbox!!

Read:11:20AM

his lips turned up slightly at the cheery tone of your text, brightening his mood a bit.

Break The Ice

the soles of his worn out shoes crunched on the fallen leaves as sunghoon sluggishly walked on the pavement. the cool january breeze blew gently, leaving a trail of goosebumps on his skin. he looked above him and watched as the sun sunk into the sky, lighting up into flames of orange and yellow which set the wispy clouds ablaze. he was broken out of his peaceful gazing by the shouts of his name. he paid no heed to it and continued walking towards the bus stop. stiffening when a hand grabbed his arm, he turned his head.

“hoon did you not hear me?”, you gasped out, panting for breath. falling into step with him you giggled, “i need to start running, i get tired so easily.”

sunghoon gave no reaction and continued to walk in silence. you noticed that he hadn’t made any attempt of moving your hand away from his arm and cheered mentally at the progress. observing his features, you frowned in worry becauset his eyes had dark circles under them and his lips looked really chapped.

“did you not sleep well last night?” you jogged up in front of him and grabbed his face, “gosh your eyes are swollen.”

sunghoon’s cheeks slowly turned a light shade of pink at the gentle way you were holding his face. he immediately pushed your hands away and resumed his walking, slightly increasing his pace so that you would not see him blushing. you eventually caught up with him and handed him a beige coloured lip balm stick.

“use this for your lips. i swear they’ll become smooth and soft overnight, just like they were!” you attempted to make a serious face but it looked more funny, “and drink lots of water, this is a sign that you’re dehydrated.”

sunghoon watched you carefully as you babbled on about some home remedy to get rid of dark circles, the ever present blank expression etched onto his face. he felt something bubble up inside of him that happened every time at the fact that you noticed even the slightest change that he went through. he felt cared for.

“thank you”, he spoke out softly.

you stopped in the middle of your sentence and your eyes widened at his words. this was probably the first time he ever said the words ‘thank you’ to you. you felt like you had achieved some sort of big accomplishment and your face immediately broke out into a wide smile.

this feeling lasted like a warm blanket over you both the entire day.

________________________________________________________________________

you had to miss out lunch once again the next week due to another robotics club meeting, which you were the vice president of. you had a free period currently so you decided to look for sunghoon since he was in the same class. after you found him missing from the classroom, you decided to go look for him at the benches he usually has his lunch at. maybe he decided to stretch it a bit longer?

you stopped on your way at a vending machine and got him his favourite cold coffee. smiling to yourself, you resumed walking. the school dance was coming up soon and you really wanted to attend it with sunghoon. so, you were going to do everything possible to get him to like you enough to be your date. and recently he had been slightly reciprocating your advances.

your face lit up when you found sunghoon right where you thought he would be. you were just about to call his name but stopped when you saw him holding the bento box you had given him today. you decided to watch secretly to see his reaction after eating the food cooked by you. he had never really given you any feedback about it, only taking the lunchboxes from you with a small huff.

your smile dropped when you saw him walk towards a dustbin and roughly throw the box in it. was the food not good? are you not hungry?

“do you do this every day?”

it looks like you voiced this thought out because sunghoon turned around and looked at you like a deer caught in headlights. this was probably the most noticeable expression you had ever seen on his usually blank face.

“are you okay? your eyes look really red.”

sunghoon remained quiet and just looked blankly at you. why did you still care about him when you clearly caught him throwing your food away. why were you the only one who was nice to him? he was trying really hard to control himself from lashing out on you but he couldn’t help it when you reached out to grab his face.

“will you stop this”, he yelled out in frustration.

“calm down hoonie-”

“stop it, just stop it!” he spat out in anger, “my name is sunghoon.”

just when you were about to open your mouth to say something, he cut you off once again.

“i’m so sick of everyone and everything. sick of you.”

a look of hurt momentarily flashed across your face as he pushed your hand away, but you immediately replaced it with a look of concern.

“what's wrong sunghoon? you never behave like this.”

“what’s wrong is that you won’t leave me alone.” he threw his arms in the air, “you’ve been constantly glued to me like a leech and i’m so damn sick of you.”

you felt as if your heart was being run over by a bulldozer at his exclamations. you tried really hard not to cry in front of him but you were sure he had noticed your glossed over eyes.

“you don’t mean that-”

“yes i do”, he gritted out. “and yes, i throw your food away everyday. i don’t want your meaningless pity.”

he watched as streams of tears rolled down your cheeks.

he watched as the girl he cared for cried silently in front of him.

you bit your lip to prevent an ugly sob from bursting out, “i’ll leave you alone then, if that’s what you think about my feelings for you.”

looking down at your shoes you walked towards the dustbin and chucked the bottle of cold coffee you had bought for him inside it. “might as well throw this away since you don’t want my pity do you.”

tears blurred your vision as you looked at sunghoon one last time and walked away, muttering about how it was a good thing you didn’t ask him out to the dance.

but this did not go unheard by him.

once you were gone, he dropped to the hard floor on his knees and covered his mouth with the sleeve of his sweater as he sobbed. he had done it once again. he pushed away one of the few people who truly cared about him.

his tears dropped to the floor, creating wet patches. and his heart felt like it was being ripped apart.

once again.

Break The Ice

today was a very happy day for sunghoon. he had finally gotten rid of what was troubling him the most.

now he had finally decided to apologise and make it up to you.

the past few days had been torture for him. he deeply regretted acting out like that the other day. he felt like he was going crazy without your presence and whenever he saw you around school, you turned the other way and avoided him, making him feel even worse. he finally understood your importance. and maybe even about his feelings for you.

people looked at him in shock as he weaved through the crowd at the corridors with a bright smile on his face. the park sunghoon, who was always depressed was smiling today? this was shocking for sunghoon himself, but he couldn’t stop imagining what your reaction would be when he would ask you out to the dance.

he walked into the class where your first period took place and found you looking out the window with your chin on your fist. you were silently gazing outside, lost in your thoughts while your friends were excitedly talking about the dance.

their chatter immediately died down to whispers upon sunghoon’s arrival. his figure loomed over you, blocking the sunlight, but you made no effort to look up. he cleared his throat awkwardly when you remained unmoving from your position.

“what?”, you grumbled out.

sunghoon felt something pull at his heart when he saw you turn around. he noticed how puffy your eyes were and how your face had red irritated scratches from constantly rubbing it. a wave of guilt washed over him as he realised that he was probably the cause for it.

“hi”, he spoke out meekly.

you were surprised to find him standing in front of you because you did not expect him to talk let alone even approach after what he did last week. you were even more surprised at the fact that he had a shy expression on his face. he did not look like the cold boy he usually was.

you scowled, “what do you want sunghoon?”

he flinched at the lack of your use of his nickname and your cold tone. your usually bright and cheery persona took a complete turn today. it wasn’t your fault though, he expected this reaction after what he did to you the other day.

a perplexed look overtook your features as you watched him place a glittery, yellow, heart shaped box in front of you. this emanated giggles from your friends, making sunghoon rub the back of his neck nervously.

“i’m really sorry for the other day.” he gulped, “i baked some cookies for you. i don’t know if they’re nice since it was my first time so..” he trailed off at the blank look you had on your face.

“you really remind me of the colour yellow so i-”

“sunghoon please stop.” you sighed, “you told me i was clingy so i stopped approaching you.”

“i didn’t-”

“i really don’t understand why you’re doing this now”, you cut him off. “just go away.” with that, you turned back to the window.

sunghoon was just about to reply when the ringing of the bell interrupted him. he panicked as everyone moved around to settle in their seats. he had no choice but to leave now.

with a heavy heart, he walked out of the class.

Break The Ice

you were filling your bottle at the water cooler when someone tapped your shoulder. you were kind of hoping it was sunghoon, but when you turned around you were met with jake. he was the president of the robotics club you were a part of.

“hi y/n”, he gave you a toothy grin.

you smiled back, “hey jake! what's up?”

your eyes widened when he grabbed your hand and placed a big bar of chocolate.

“i really like you and want to take you to the dance.” his grin widened, “will you go with me?”

before you could comprehend what was happening a voice laced with poison spoke up behind you.

“no she won’t.”

the voice belonged to sunghoon who grabbed your wrist gently and pulled you away from jake. you shook his grip off of you when he stopped at the benches where you would meet up with him at lunch.

“what the hell sunghoon? why did you bring me here?”

he didn’t respond and only stared at you with a furious glint in his eye. his face was twisted up into an angry expression as he questioned you.

“were you going to go with him?”

you scoffed in disbelief, “why do you even care? aren’t you sick of me?”

sunghoon’s face fell at your words that repeated what he said to you the other day. he remained silent and just stared at your face. you closed your eyes and shook your head.

“just stay out of my business if you don’t care about me”

you had just turned around to walk away when a pair of hands snaked around your waist and pulled you back into a warm chest.

“i’m sorry, please stay”, sunghoon’s voice came out muffled as his face was buried in your shoulder.

you were sure that your heart was going to explode any moment now from the intimate position you both were in. sunghoon had barely ever even held your hand and now he was back hugging you. you couldn’t stop yourself from blushing like a beet.

“w-what are you doing?”

sunghoon panicked and immediately removed his hands from you, assuming that he was making you uncomfortable. you frowned at the loss of contact and turned around.

“sunghoon, you’re really confusing me.”

he froze for a few moments then took a deep breath and began his explanation.

“that day..” he looked you in the eyes, “i didn’t mean anything i said.”

you looked at him intently, urging him to continue.

“you know how my parents got divorced last year right?”

you nodded. his mom was really toxic and controlling and used to emotionally abuse sunghoon’s dad. she was an alcoholic and sometimes lost control of herself leading to her showcasing violent behaviour. with the support of their friends and family, sunghoon’s dad had finally gained enough courage to divorce her.

“yeah so my mom has been fighting for custody of my little sister.” his voice cracked, “and at that time things looked good for her.”

he sniffed and looked down at his feet, “neither my sister nor did we want her to live with my mom. she would’ve ruined her life as well.”

“i took my anger out on you instead and i feel really horrible about it. you’ve been nothing but kind to me since day one, even after how coldly i treated you.”

his eyes welled up with tears and turned red as he tried to stop himself from crying. he looked so broken and hurt right now, and you wanted nothing more than to hold him. and so you did.

wrapping your arms around his torso you tried to calm him down by rubbing his back. he slowly reciprocated your gesture

you spoke softly, “i’m so sorry you had to go through this hoon. you and your family deserve none of this”

he sighed in relief at your reuse of his nickname and tightened his grip around you. your words were simple, but comforted him like no other.

“it’s okay, everything is fine now. my dad won the case and i finally feel relieved for once.”

you pulled back from him at the revelation and smiled in glee.

“really? that’s amazing, i’m so happy for you!”

you were back to your normal, jolly personality which sent a surge of joy through sunghoon, making him give you a full smile. you gasped in surprise.

“oh my god, your smile is so pretty!”

sunghoon’s cheeks turned rosy at your compliment and shyly buried his face in the crook of your neck, making you giggle. who knew a boy who behaved so coldly was such a softie.

“i never threw out your food by the way, except for that day because i had no appetite”, he stated guiltily. “you are an amazing cook.”

“thank you sunghoon, but”, you paused. “i don’t think we can be friends.”

sunghoon pulled away from you in alarm. did he mess things up that badly?

“not after those amazing cookies you gave me.” you pecked his cheek softly, “you have to promise to be mine.”

sunghoon chuckled in relief, “you really got me there.”

“i promise to be yours, love.”

Fight For My Way!

YOU KNEW IT’S WRONG TO SIMP OVER YOUR FRIENDS, BUT YOU COULDN’T HELP IT.

Since when did Kang Taehyun get so hot?

You hadn’t even worn your dobok yet and you were already sweating just looking at him box with that punching bag. His arm muscles flexed and rippled deliciously, and his face which was contorted into a focused expression, glimmered under the studio lights due to the layer of sheen sweat that coated his body. A drop rolled down the bridge of his nose and was about to land on his lips when he stopped and wiped it off. The sudden change in movement brought you out of your daydream and you mentally punched yourself for drooling over one of your best friends. You need to stop simping over anyone who is even the slightest bit hot.

You slung your bag on your shoulder and walked towards the locker room to get changed. Shuffling through your belongings, you tried to find the plastic in which you had kept your dobok, when you were startled by the feeling of someone's hand on your back. You looked behind to see your best friend Danielle grinning at you.

“You’re a bit early today.”, she stated. You sighed, “Yeah, my mom kicked me out of the house at six in the morning. I was wandering around till class started.” Danielle patted your shoulder sympathetically. Ever since the summer holidays for your senior year had started, your mom had been making sure you didn’t laze around the house and be productive everyday. This was the last year for your taekwondo training and then you would finally receive your black belt. Your mom felt it was important for you to go for training.

Every. Single. Day.

Honestly, you were a bit pissed in the beginning because you couldn’t join the rest of your school friends on their month long trip to Kyoto. But, Taehyun and Danielle were staying back as well for their training, so things were good.

You wore the white jacket on top of your t-shirt and slipped your belt through the white loops. Your pants were almost up your calves when Danielle spoke again. “Do you wanna come over to my house in the evening? We should get started on our physics project. You jumped in excitement at her offer, “Is your brother gonna be there?”

Danielle slapped your arm, “Why does that matter? We have to do our work, I’m not going to sit there and watch you fangirl over him.”

Ah yes, Danielle's brother, Choi Yeonjun.

The man you were absolutely smitten with.

The perfect, handsome, smart and talented golden boy of the school.

Your crush of three years.

And lately, it felt like he was reciprocating your feelings as well because he had started flirting with you back. You would take any chance to interact with him, which is why you were always ecstatic to visit Danielle’s house.

“Just tell me please”, you dragged out your sentence in a whiny voice, making Danielle hiss at the annoying sound. “Okay okay, he’s going to be there. He has nothing to do this week.” You squealed and pumped your fist in the air. Danielle just rolled her eyes at your actions and pulled you out of the locker room to join the training.

Fight For My Way!

You lay spread eagle on the blue foam mat. Your arms felt like wet, heavy ham and the muscles in your thighs felt like they were stretched to the maximum. You really shouldn’t have skipped your warm up but you had no idea how rigorous today’s training would be. Your coach was hellbent on making sure you perfected your double roundhouse kick and only let you take a break when you got the hang of it. These were probably the most tiring four hours of your life.

Suddenly, a handsome face came into your view as the person loomed over your body and blocked the light, making you jolt up. After getting a closer look you realised it was just your best friend, Taehyun and stomped on his feet out of annoyance.

“Yah, why did you just pop out of nowhere? You startled me.”

Taehyun huffed at your words, “I thought you fell asleep. Let’s go home now, my stomach is gonna digest itself if I don’t feed it anything soon.” You rolled your eyes at his exaggeration and went towards the locker room to get your belongings.

Danielle had already left before you both, so you took the shorter route towards your house. Usually you both would drop her off along the way and then walk back together since you lived right next to each other.

The walk back home was rather silent, filled with occasional slurps of the popsicles you both had bought. Your walks home were usually always filled with a comfortable science accompanied by some type of snack. Lately, you both had been trying to eat all the popsicle flavours of the new trending brand. Today, you both tried the cherry lime flavour and honestly, it was absolutely disgusting. You stared at the bright red and green ice on the stick and grimaced.

“This tastes really bad. Especially the cherry side, it’s just frozen cough medicine.”

Taehyun shrugged his shoulders, “I kind of like it, the combination is nice.” You wrinkled your nose at his remark, “You have a bad taste.”

He turned to look at you with mock hurt on his face when you noticed a red stain from the popsicle on the corner of his lips. You giggled and tried to rub off the insistent stain from the corner of his lips, making Taehyun freeze in his spot. You looked at him to be met with his eyes already staring at your face. His face looked flushed and his eyes were wide open. His eyes

Ah yes, his eyes were so mesmerising. They looked like pools of freshly brewed coffee that always held a sparkle in them. You quickly moved away when Taehyun spoke up, “W-what are you doing?”

You cleared your throat, “You had a red stain on your face.”

These types of events between you two had been frequenting a lot lately and you felt slightly bothered by it.

He rolled his eyes,“Your entire lips are green, eat the cherry part also. You look like Mike Wazowski.”

“Shut up.”, you muttered while wiping your lips.

You handed your half eaten popsicle to him and resumed walking. Feeling disgusted by the sight of him gorging down both of the disgusting frozen treats you decided to change the topic. “I’m going to Danielle's house later to start our physics project.” Taehyun nodded. “Yeonjun is gonna be there too.”, you sighed dreamily, making him glare at you.

“Why are you still obsessed with that bastard?”

You gasped in offence, “How dare you call him that? He’s an amazing guy.” At that, Taehyun chucked the ice cream sticks in the nearby dustbin a bit too forcefully for your liking. You had a slight idea why Taehyun and Yeonjun had a beef between them. Both of them were academic rivals, always competing for the top spot, which was why they were never nice to each other and always bickered. But you were not letting their issue meddle with your non-existent love life.

“He’s annoying and not a nice guy. Just last week I saw him walking around with a new chick.” He threw his hands in the air, “How could he do that when he just dumped his girlfriend!”

Yeah that was true. Yeonjun was a bit of a playboy. I mean what could you expect with such good looks and personality. Girls were throwing themselves on him right and left and he just accepted it. You would do that too if you were that perfect.

“I don’t care, I know he would never hurt someone intentionally.” Taehyun shook his head at your obvious lovesickness. You were too blinded by your crush to notice the possibility of getting hurt. You waved him off when you reached your driveway. “Okay bye, I have to pick an outfit for the evening.” Taehyun didn’t bother looking at you and just simply reminded you that it wasn’t a date. But who cares? Definitely not you.

Fight For My Way!

The shiny silver doorbell was waiting for you, inviting you to press it, but you just stood like a fool at Danielle’s doorstep. Why were you getting nervous for absolutely no reason?(Yeonjun)It’s not like this was your first time visiting her house.

You dismissed your worry with a nervous chuckle and smoothened your hair down one last time. The summer heat was making it frizzier by the second and you had to look your best for Yeonjun, which meant you had to enter the house soon. Taking a deep breath, you finally pressed the doorbell.

A few moments later the door opened to bless you with the most beautiful sight gifted to mankind, Yeonjun's beaming face. He gave your outfit a once over and his smile turned into a smirk. You looked at your sage green tank top and acid washed denim shorts. Did he not like them? It was pretty basic but you wanted to look casual.

“Whatcha thinkin’ about Y/n?”

His voice broke you out of your dilemma. Now you felt too scared to respond. Taking another deep breath you tried to keep your voice steady. “I’m here to study with Danielle.”

For some reason his smirk grew bigger as he checked you out once again and leaned against the doorframe. Wait, was he checking you out? You really suck at this love stuff because you had absolutely now idea what was going on. Were you reading into stuff too much?

“Studying during summer break?”

He raised his eyebrows as if reminding you to speak. You cleared your throat, “Yeah we have to complete a physics project.” He nodded. “Danielle is out running errands though. She won’t be back for another hour.”

You frowned at that information, “But she told me to come over.” Yeonjun shrugged his shoulders, motioning for you to come in. “You can wait in her room.” You had no choice but to agree because he had already started walking in. You sighed and mentally sent a prayer to all the gods to prevent you from embarrassing yourself further.

Suddenly he stopped in his steps and spinned around to face you. You immediately forced your feet to stop walking to prevent crashing into his back. “Do you want to watch a movie with me instead?”

Your heart dropped to your toenails at his words. As much as you wanted to jump at the offer, there was no way you would survive an entire movie with him without embarrassing yourself. You really need Danielle right now. Why did she have to be absent right now?!

Tucking a strand of hair behind your ear, you tried to look as apologetic as possible, “Actually I should get started on my work. Maybe another time?”

Yeonjun smiled, “Yeah sure.”

You gave him a sheepish smile and started your ascent up the stairs to Danielle's room. The entire time, you could feel a pair of eyes burning into you. Maybe the shorts worked! Smirking to yourself, you pushed the door to Danielle's room open.

Fight For My Way!

It had been over an hour and so far you had listed out all the main points and subheadings to be included in your project. You had no idea when Danielle would come back; every time you called her she would say that she'll be home soon. There was a lot of rush at the supermarket she had forcibly gone to with her mom. You had thought about going back home but your mom wanted you to study as much as you could and it wasn’t evening yet, so here you are.

Your face was almost going into the laptop screen because of the amount of concentration you had on finding the perfect template for your ppt. The opening of the door shortly distracted you, but you deemed that it was Danielle.

"Bro, what took you so long? Was it actually that crowded? It's not even a weekend today." You didn't bother looking behind and continued doing your work.

You immediately stiffened at the feeling of two arms wrapping loosely around your collarbone. A warm breath fanned your neck sending chills down your spine. "This is not Danielle."

Yeonjun.

How and why were his arms wrapped around you? You weren't complaining because this was your dream come true but at the same time this was not good for your heart, which at this point was about to beat its way or of your chest.

You rolled your chair away from his hold and stood up, almost about to trip over nothing. You were sure you looked redder than a tomato right now but you somehow managed the courage to look up at Yeonjun, who was already staring back at you. His head was tilted slightly and his pink lips were scrunched up in a pout.

Brushing a non existent stand of hair away from your face, you decided to question him about his previous actions.

"Why did you do that?"

He frowned in confusion as if asking you what?

"The hug, why did you just hug me out of nowhere?"

A look of realisation crossed his face and he just chuckled softly at your question. "I was pretending to be Danielle." He smirked, "Why? Don't friends hug each other?"

If he was flirting with you or friend zoning you, you had absolutely no idea. You had to change the conversation quickly. "Why did you come up, is Danielle back now?"

"She's on the way now." He pointed towards the door, "I just made some rose lemonade, let's go drink that while you wait."

You nodded and followed him down to the kitchen. Leaning against the marble counter, trying to look as calm and collected as possible while Yeonjun fetched the pitcher full of the pink drink. Suddenly, he turned around and started walking towards you, making you instantly freeze at your spot with an awkward smile etched onto your face. He got closer and stopped once his feet were almost touching yours. Giving you a dashing smile he slowly leaned forward. Was he going to kiss you?

Your dream is finally coming true! You closed your eyes and puckered your lips slightly in anticipation for his to land on them. But that never happened. You opened your eyes to see a wide eyed Yeonjun staring back at you with two glasses in his hand. Oh, he was only reaching for the glasses behind you.

Embarrassment washed over you, making your cheeks flame up in shame as Yeonjun giggled. You really wanted to melt away into a big puddle of nothing right now. Clearing your throat you snatched a glass from his hand and poured yourself the lemonade. Yeonjun watched you with an amused smile as you chugged down the entire glass in one go to cool down your burning cheeks.

“Was it that good?”

You nodded bashfully and winked, “I think this is my new favourite drink.” Your poor attempt at flirting made Yeonjun giggle and shake his head and you just smiled dreamily at him. He probably had the most beautiful laugh and you could hear it on replay for hours. You had been playing this game for quite some time now and literally everyone knew about your humongous crush on him. You had horrible flirting skills and were always oblivious if someone showed interest in you. Your exemplary skills in taekwondo and bubbly personality had attracted many but you ended up friendzoning them unintentionally. You only had eyes for Yeonjun, who was currently washing the dishes you both had drunk from. He was such boyfriend material.

“My friend is hosting a party this Friday.” he turned off the tap and wiped his hands on the kitchen towel. “I’m sure you know who Jaeyun is.” you hummed in reply.

“You should come, it’ll be fun.”

You were usually never interested in parties, in fact you never had the time to even think about it while juggling school and taekwondo together. But, you had a bit of free time now since school was off. And Yeonjun’s offer kind of seemed like he was asking you on a date? You can’t just straight up ask him that so maybe you should just go and find out. This could finally be your moment to directly confess your feelings. You were getting tired of holding them back.

“Okay”, you smiled. “I’ll be there.” Yeonjun beamed at your words. “That's great-”

“Can I bring Taehyun as well?”

Yeonjun’s smile dropped for a second but he nodded enthusiastically, which didn’t really show on his face. The air turned kind of awkward at the mention of his name and you were brainstorming things to change the subject when you were saved by the doorbell.

You immediately perked up the sound, “Ah, I think Danielle is home.” Yeonjun gave a forced smile back, “Yeah, have fun with your project. I have some work to do. I’ll see you on Friday.” with that he walked back to his room.

Your face fell at his sudden change of behaviour. You knew he had no work to do this week because Danielle had told you so. It was kind of weird but you assumed it was probably because you mentioned Taehyun. He shouldn’t dislike him so much though, afterall he was one of his sister’s closest friends. Shrugging it off you walked to the door to let Danielle and her mom in.

Fight For My Way!

It was the day of the party and Taehyun(who had agreed to attend after much of your insistence) and you stood right outside the door, waiting for someone to open it. Danielle had decided not to attend the party and had gone out with her other friends to the amusement park instead. You would have joined her as well because parties were not your thing and you’d rather spend your time riding roller coasters, but this was a matter of love. You had to make sacrifices for your dear Yeonjun.

The door opened to reveal a beaming Jaeyun, “Hi guys! I’m so glad you came.” he motioned for you both to come inside, “The drinks and snacks are over there and we’re playing games in the living room.” He patted you both on your backs. “Have fun!” Both of you smiled back at his warm welcome and walked inside the huge bungalow.

The kitchen counter was lined up with all sorts of colourful sodas and delicacies. The living room stretched far and wide, making you gaze at it in awe. Colourful fairy lights were strung across the ceiling, setting the people’s face aglow with multiple colours. Trending pop songs blared through the speakers and you could feel the bass thump to the beat of your heart. People were spread across the entire house and some of them were gathered outside in the lawn.

Taheyun pointed at the people playing games, breaking you out of your trance.“I think they’re setting up a game of twister, let’s go join them!” You shook your head, “I should go find Yeonjun first.”

Taehyun’s jaw ticked at your words. He rolled his eyes as he spoke, “I don’t think you should do this, he’s not a good guy.” You frowned at his words, “How do you know? You just hate him because he is better than you in academics.”

He grasped your shoulders and his eyes turned serious. “That’s not the problem. I’ve seen how he treats people. He may act all nice and sweet in front of you, but he’s actually really shallow.” He sighed at the perplexed look on your face. “He’s a walking red flag Y/n and I’ve been trying to get you to understand that for a long time.” You remained unfazed at his words because just like he mentioned, he always said the same thing. No matter what happened you were going to try to shoot your shot.

Flashing him a sympathetic smile, you patted his shoulder. “Sorry buddy, nothing is going to stop me. Unless you have feelings for me or something.” You snickered at your ridiculous thoughts, missing the blush that overtook Taehyun’s face. He looked away at your words and shrugged his shoulders. “Okay then, I gave you enough warnings.” Rolling your eyes at this dismissive behaviour you grabbed his wrist and dragged him to the group of people setting up the game of twister. “Calm down drama queen, let’s play this first then I can go accomplish my mission.” He sighed and accompanied you as you said.

The game was going pretty well and you were confident in your chances of winning. You were in a fairly easy position compared to others, who had their limbs twisted in all sorts of hilarious ways. Especially Taehyun who was basically in an upside down table pose. You tried not to notice the way his biceps were bulging out from under his black turtleneck, but it was hard to do so.

Looking away from him, you accidentally made eye contact with Yeonjun who seemed to have just arrived at the party. You waved at him and motioned that you will talk to him later. He gave a bright smile and flashed a thumbs up at your actions. Soon after, a girl with bright red hair walked up to him and kissed his cheek. Your heart shattered at her actions. He has a girlfriend?

He proved your assumptions incorrect when he pushed her off of him. Getting a closer look you realised it was his ex. She was probably just a psycho. You were planning to spy on them more but annoyed shouts of your name brought you back to reality. “Y/n what are you doing? You’re the only one left to finish your move, everyone is already done.”

Apologising, you looked at the wheel that had decided your next move. Looking back at the twister mat, you realised that all the good required spots were taken. The spots that were left for you were only reachable if you bent over Taehyun. Which meant you would be leaning over him until the next move. You had no idea why you were feeling so nervous about it though. He was your best friend after all, you were the closest to him. You’ve been together since childhood. It was stupid to feel nervous over something so trivial.

Putting on a cool exterior, you leaned over him to take your position. Both of your arms were placed next to his torso and your face was directly hovering over his. You were shocked to see his cheeks turn red because of the close proximity of you both. He was avoiding eye contact with you and you frowned. One nudge of your elbow brought his eyes back to yours.

Deja vu hit you as you couldn’t help but get lost in his mesmerising eyes once again. That one twinkle that was always present in them no matter what, the colour of his orbs and the warmth they held every time they looked at you made you lean in closer. You were so close to each other that you could see your own reflection in his eyes. Butterflies filled your stomach and you felt warm and fuzzy all over at the realisation of your close proximity with him. Taehyun could now feel your warm breath on his lips and he closed his eyes in anticipation of your next move.

But instead of that, your face crashed onto the expanse of his neck with an embarrassingly loud smooch. Some idiot had kicked your leg by accident, which made you lose your balance and bring down Taehyun with you. You don’t know what demon possessed you to do this but you took a big sniff and the smell of vanilla and cologne invaded your senses, making you sigh out in content. The feeling of Taehyun’s body stiffening under you brought you out of your stupor and you immediately scrambled to get up. Why did you act like a creep, you want to cry now.

You awkwardly rubbed the back of your neck when everyone started clearing away. The game had ended because the idiot who had tripped you had also ended up rolling down the entire mat merrily like a bowling bowl, knocking everyone down.

That wasn't the issue right now though. Were you just going to kiss your best friend? There was no way you had any sort of feelings for him. Just a month ago you had given him a friendship day bracelet and told him he was like a brother to you. So now why were you so curious to know what his lips felt like. You spinned around to see Taehyun clutching his chest like he was a heart patient.

Trying to push away the recent embarrassing encounter into the deep, dark pits of your brain, you walked up to him and stood silently, gazing at his lips. They were a light rosy shade of pink and looked glossy due to the coat of transparent lip gloss you had applied on them before coming to the party. They looked so soft.

You were shaken out of your thoughts when Taehyun flicked your forehead. You gasped and clutched your forehead in pain, “Ow, what was that for?”

Taehyun smirked as he pulled you closer by your shoulders. “You seem kind of obsessed with me lately. Those looks haven’t gone unnoticed by me you know.” he raised an eyebrow cockily, “Are you sure it’s not me you have a crush on dear Y/n?”

You sputtered and coughed like a broken car engine at his words. How did he already guess what was going on in your mind?

Shrugging his hands off of you, you gave a firm whack to his chest. “H-how can you even say that! I only have eyes for Yeonjun, you’re nothing compared to him.”

Taehyun snickered and just pulled you into his side, guiding you towards the table full of food you both had been eyeing. He leaned towards your ear and whispered in a low voice, “I’m pretty sure we were about to do something else back in the game though.”

Your face was burning with embarrassment now. Nothing can save you now, Taehyun was in his cheeky mode. He was oozing with confidence and you were blushing as bright as a beet.

You huffed in annoyance and pushed him away to speed walk towards the table. Not bothering to wait for him to catch up, you picked up two humongous cupcakes, ready to stuff your mouth. Suddenly, a hand came up to your shoulder making you almost drop your food in surprise. Thinking it was Taehyun, you put on the ugliest scowl on your face and turned around to face him.

“What do you-” you paused midway through your sentence when you realised who was in front of you. It was a smiling Yeonjun, who was looking smoking hot today. He had adorned a tight fitted black shirt with a grey patterned jacket and his hair was styled to show off his gorgeous forehead. You immediately dropped your scowl and put on your most charming smile.

“Oh hey Yeonjun!” His smile widened at your greeting but all of a sudden, his eyes turned dark when he looked at something behind you. You looked over to see Taehyun standing there with a cup in his hand, his expression as cold as ice. They both were practically shooting lasers from their eyes and you could almost feel the heat from it. Gulping, you looked away and tried to think of what to say.

“I have to tell you something important.” you blurted out. Yeonjun finally broke his staring contest with Taehyun and smiled at you, “Sure, go ahead!” Okay, this was the perfect time to confess your feelings.

Although for some reason you hesitated before speaking. You could not stop thinking about what happened between you and your best friend today. Were you doing the right thing or should you ponder on it more? Unfortunately, one raise of Yeonjun’s eyebrow had you spilling everything out.

“I have a crush on you and I think you’re really cool!”

Is this how it feels like to have a heart attack? Because suddenly it felt like you couldn’t breathe anymore and your heart was pounding erratically. Maybe it wasn’t a good idea to confess if you felt this scared after it.

Before you could comprehend Yeonjun’s reaction to your confession, the feeling of something cold and sticky being poured over you made you scream in shock.

Your mouth was hung open in shock as you turned around to see who the culprit was. It was the same girl with cherry red hair who had kissed Yeonjun on the cheek before. You scoffed in anger, “What the fuck was that for?”

She crossed her arms with a stupid smirk painted onto her face. “You were shamelessly flirting with my boyfriend, I obviously had to do something.” You were about to retort but Yeonjun beat you to it. “Lena we broke up a week ago, can you stop doing things like this! I’m so sick of you.”

Lena just chuckled and shook her head frantically. Pushing you out of the way, she walked up to Yeonjun and cupped his cheeks with her manicured hands. “No baby, we’re just going through a bad time. We’re still very much in love with each other.”

Letting out a tired sigh, he pushed her hands away from his face. “Stop being so delusional.” He looked towards you with an apologetic gaze, “Why would you pour your drink over her? She’s like a sister to me. That’s not acceptable..”

Ouch

This was worse than getting friendzoned, he sister zoned you. That too right in front of his ex. After you confessed your feelings for him. You tuned out the rest of his words as anger bubbled up inside you. You knew you were not as delusional as the mosquito of a girl in front of you. Yeonjun has reciprocated your advances sometimes and has even initiated flirting with you. Then why would he say all that?

A warm hand clasped around your forearm that was now sticky from the soda that was poured over you. Taehyun pulled you towards him gently with a concerned look on his face. “Are you okay Y/n? Do you want to leave?” Your face softened at his genuine concern.

A mischievous glint appeared in your eyes as you decided on what you were going to do. “Give me five minutes Taehyun, I'm going to make sure someone pays for ruining my dress.” Taehyun’s eyebrows raised as he understood what you were about to do.

You moved towards Lena who was still yapping about how much she loved Yeonjun, and tapped her shoulder. She pushed her tongue against her cheek when she realised it was you, “What?”

Giving her a condescending smile you motioned towards your outfit that was drenched in the sticky soda. “You’re going to have to pay for the damage you did.” Lena scoffed in disbelief, “And what makes you think I’ll do that? Get lost, don’t waste my time.” She waved you off and turned back to Yeonjun. Even though it was against your morals to fight with someone weaker than you, you were not going to be civil with her anymore.

Grabbing a fistful of her obnoxious bright red hair, you yanked her towards you making her yelp in pain. Turning her around, you repeated yourself, “Are you going to pay or not?”

She looked at you with a crazed look in her eyes. “Of course not you psycho.” She punched you weakly on the jaw making everyone around you gasp in shock.

“You started this”, shrugging you let go of her hair and punched her smack on the nose, making her stumble backwards. A loud crack resonated throughout the room. Lena shrieked in pain as her hands became red from trying to stop her nose from bleeding. One of her fake eyelashes(which was about half the length of your fingers) had fallen onto the floor due to the impact of your punch.

You pouted mockingly, “I guess you’ll have to get a nose job again.”

Wiping away the blood from her face she charged at you with her fist ready to strike, but you easily grabbed her arm making her stagger to stop. You twisted her arm around till it was painfully bent behind her back. She whimpered in pain and tapped on your arm. “Ow please, that hurts.” You scoffed, “This is nothing, I can do much worse if I want.”

She looked up at Yeonjun with pleading eyes, “Y-yeonjun please stop this psychotic bi-” You tightened your grip on her arm making her groan out in pain. Yeonjun paid no heed to her words, in fact he was watching the entire scene play out with an amused look on his face.

You looked to your left and tilted your head at Taehyun, silently asking him what to do next. He was watching you with a proud smile and nodded his head signalling you to do what you wanted. You gave him a thumbs up and returned back to your situation.

You gave her a firm kick to her shin, making her fall on her knees. She raised her free hand in defeat, “Okay okay I’ll pay you for the drycleaning I promise!” You huffed loudly and left her arm causing her to completely collapse on the floor. You nodded towards Yeonjun with a blank face. “You’re going to leave him alone as well.” She squeaked out a yes, handed you a fifty dollar bill and scurried away, probably leaving the party.

Everyone else cheered loudly for you for standing up to her. You grinned and jogged over to Taheyun and grabbed his hand, “How did I do?”

His eyes held affection as he looked you over. “Awesome.” That one word of praise cheered you up instantly, much better than any amount of ice cream would have.

You both were just about to leave the driveway of Jake’s house when the shout of your name made you both halt. You turned to see none other than Yeonjun jog towards you with a set of keys in his hands. He held them out to you and looked at you with an unreadable expression, “I think you dropped your keys behind.” Your eyes widened and you grabbed them from him, thanking him in a small voice.

He stuffed his hands in his pockets and looked you up and down, the action making Taehyun’s grip on your hand tighten. “You were really cool back there. I’m glad I got to see you in action.” You hummed, not knowing what to say. Can he not read the room? It felt so awkward to even look at him anymore.

He cleared his throat and his confident persona dropped for a minute as he scratched the back of his neck nervously. “Actually, what I said back there about you being like my sister.” Your head shot up at his words. “I didn’t mean any of that.” He looked at his feet. “I only said that to get Lena off your back, but if I knew you would’ve taken care of it yourself I never would have done that”, he trailed off in his sentence.

Taehyun’s voice cut through the tense atmosphere, making you feel relieved as he questioned what you weren’t able to, “Cut to the chase.” Yeonjun ignored him and looked directly into your eyes. “Well I don’t exactly have feelings for you right now, but I really want to make it up to you. You’re a really cool person” He stepped closer towards you, “I want to take you out for dinner this Sunday.”

You could almost feel the anger radiate off Taehyun as he spat out his next words, “Did you start finding her cool only because she beat your psycho ex girlfriend up.” He scoffed, “You don’t owe her a favour, she did what was right.” Your shoulders slumped at his words, is that how he actually felt?

Yeonjun rolled his eyes, “Please don’t bring your jealousy into the middle of all this. Y/n can make her own decisions.” Both the boys looked at you intently, waiting for you to make your decision. The urge to crawl in a hole and live there forever was extremely strong right now. You really couldn’t handle the pressure. Wanting the best of both worlds, you said the first thing that came up to you.

“I’m okay with the dinner.” Yeonjun’s face brightened up in victory whilst Taehyun dropped his hand from yours in defeat.

Why was he so upset about it now? It’s not like you were going on a date with Yeonjun, he made it very clear he doesn’t like you. And why were you so adamant on making sure Taheyun understood that? You can’t deal with all this romance shit.

Being born as a dolphin would’ve been so much better.

Fight For My Way!

It was the day of the _date?_ dinner and you were currently lacing up your doc martens on your front porch. You had decided to wear a black skirt with a white top and a dark brown coat since it was raining today so it was a bit chilly outside, even though it was the middle of summer. You had only just finished wearing your shoes when your phone started ringing, indicating a video call from Danielle. You furrowed your brows and picked it up, “Hello-”

“Y/n you absolute moron!” she screamed from the other side making you flinch.

“What happened? Since when did you start insulting me, Taehyun was enough-”

“This is about him! How could you be so heartless?”, she cut you off once again. You frowned, what did you do to him?

“Stop making that face, you look like a pug.” She rolled her eyes, “Why are you going out with Yeonjun today?”

Oh so this is what this is about.

You shook your head, “It’s not really a date, he just wanted to take me out to dinner.” Danielle's lips formed into a thin line at that. “You mean my brother, who’s basically a casanova, is taking you out to a casual dinner?” She shook her head disapprovingly, “I didn’t think you could be so clueless.

You squinted at her in confusion, “Just tell me what you want to. Don’t beat around the bush. There’s no time for that, he’ll be here any moment.”

Pinching her nose in frustration, she let out a deep breath. “Taehyun told me the full story of what happened at the party since someone else forgot to.” You gave her a guilty smile at that. Danielle caught a horrible flu a few days ago, so you didn’t really get the time to update her on all this.

“He likes you Y/n. He’s been hopelessly in love with you since the past five years.” Your jaw hung open at that. There’s no way your suspicions were right. Taehyun actually liked you? You felt gooey and warm like a freshly baked brownie right now. You could feel the heat spread through your entire body at the idea of Taehyun liking you.

“Close your mouth Y/n, I can see your internal organs.” You really wanted to slap her right now because her sarcastic commentary really wasn't helping you with the whirlwind of emotions you were going through.

You let out a deep sigh, “I really don’t know Danielle. I feel so happy and excited at the thought of that? But also kind of scared. He’s my best friend, you know, I don’t want to mess things up.”

She shook her head at you with pity, “It’s too late for that, you already did.”

“What do you mean?”

“Are you kidding me?”, she scoffed. “Taehyun is competing in the interstate Taekwondo championship today!” You stood up from your seat in horror, “What! Why didn’t you tell me before?”

She wiped her runny nose into her tissue and glared at you, “You’re his closest friend, I didn’t think you would forget something so important.” She sighed, “I can’t attend the fight because of my cold, but you should.”

The honk of a car horn made you look in front to see Yeonjun waving at you. You mirrored his actions and looked back into your phone. “There’s still time till the fight right?”

She nodded, “It starts in thirty minutes.” Muttering a ‘shit’, you thanked her for giving you a reality check. She only nodded and coughed into her tissue once again, “It’s up to you to pick between your amazing and sincere best friend or my brother who’s probably only interested in you for your fighting skills.” Nodding solemnly you cut the call and stuffed your phone into your sidebag. By then, Yeonjun had walked up to your doorstep with an umbrella in his hand.

“Are you ready to go?”

Fight For My Way!

Your hands were set on your lap as you watched the rain fall outside of the car window. You were sitting in a rather rigid manner on your seat as you listened to Yeonjun blabber about some olympiads he had won medals for. You felt bad because you weren’t paying any attention to what he was saying. You couldn't get Taehyun off of your mind.

The warmth he made you feel everytime he smiled and when the dimple on his right cheek showed. The way your heart fluttered when you watched him execute taekwondo moves with perfection and the way his face lit up with joy each time he was successful. The butterflies that swarmed your stomach every time you hugged him or held his hand. All of this, you had been brushing them away for so long thinking that this was a normal thing for friends. There was no way you could be more than that. But now realisation seemed to dawn upon you, you had been in love with him all along, perhaps even longer than he has been.

Looking next to you, you observed Yeonjun. He still made you feel nervous and excited, but you realised that this was a different kind of feeling. The kind you feel when you receive updates from your favourite celebrity. It was nothing more than a schoolgirl crush, the one where he was just good eye candy to admire. He didn’t make you feel the comfort and love you felt with Taehyun. And you didn’t feel the same way about him either.

You have to see Taehyun, right now

Shuffling through your bag for your phone, you frantically checked the time. You still had fifteen more minutes to go before his match started.

“Yeonjun can you please take me to X stadium instead? I’m so sorry, but I can’t have dinner with you today, I have to go.”

Yeonjun frowned, “What happened all of a sudden? Is it that urgent?”

“Yes it is, please turn the car around.”

He nodded, still confused. He was about to question you but stopped when he saw you hold up your phone to your ear, trying to call Taehyun so you could tell him you were coming to his match. He received missed calls after missed calls from you, but he didn’t pick up any. His phone was probably with the coach.

Soon, Yeonjun stopped the car at a red light right across the stadium. You asked him to unlock the car door and thanked him for the ride. His eyes widened, “Are you going to walk in the rain? It’ll just take me five more minutes to make a U-turn.” You shook your head, “There’s no time for that, I’ll miss Taehyun-”

“You’re going to see Taehyun?”

“Yes, I’m sorry for leaving you like this but I can’t miss out on his match. I forgot about it till today.” you sighed, “I also need to tell him something.” You breathed out in frustration when Yeonjun just stared at you blankly, not complying to your request. Reaching over him you turned off the door locks. You had just stepped one leg out when he stopped you by grabbing your wrist.

“I thought you liked me.” you looked at him with surprise. What is he playing at? Judging by the pissed off expression on his face you could conclude that he was jealous because you were ditching him for his rival.

You gave him a small smile, “I was wrong.”

Slamming the car door shut, you dashed off into the rain and crossed the road towards the stadium entrance. You always found the main leads in movies crazy to be running in the heavy rain towards their lover, but you finally understood their situation today. A stupid smile was graced upon your features and you couldn’t wait to tell Taehyun everything you felt about him.

Upon entering the stadium, you immediately ran towards the direction of the changing rooms and were met with your coach standing in front of it. His eyes widened momentarily upon seeing you all soaked.

“Y/n you’re here? What hap-”

“Is Taehyun inside?”, desperation laced your voice as you questioned him. He nodded, “Yes, but he has to be out soon-”

You cut him off once again by thanking him and entered the room behind him. The slam of a door being shut, startled the man standing in front of you, making him drop the water bottle he was holding. He faced you with eyes as wide as saucers, clearly not expecting to see you here.

“You came? But what about your dinner?”

You paced towards him and smacked his shoulder, “Screw that, why didn’t you remind me of your match even if I forgot?” he winced as you whacked him once again, “You know this is equally important to me as much as it is to you!”

He caught your hand when you were going to hit him again. “I didn’t want to disturb your date, I know how badly you want to be with him.” he tried to mask the hurt on his face but you could see it in his eyes. “This is just one match, I would have told you the results anyways, you didn’t have to-”

You cut him off by grabbing the collar of his white uniform and smashing your lips onto his. Taehyun froze for a few seconds but then slowly closed his eyes and cupped your face as he kissed you back. He tilted his head to deepen the kiss and moved his lips with more fervour. The kiss soon turned messy and heated as you both let out your years of pent up feeling you couldn’t say. His lips were cushiony soft and tasted like vanilla and peppermint. Your brain felt like it turned to mush as you moved your lips against his addictive ones. Damn, if you knew he was such a good kisser, you would’ve asked him out yourself long ago.

Your knees were about to give out from the intensity of the kiss, so he wrapped one of his hands around your waist and pulled you flush against him. When you felt like you couldn’t breathe anymore you pushed him by his chest away slightly, but he only chased your lips for more, muffling the squeal that came out from you with his lips. He pressed a kiss to the corner of your mouth, then your nose, your cheeks and continued to pepper kisses all over your face, making you giggle in glee. He pulled away and held your face as if you were the most precious gem in the world. You felt your cheeks heat up as you looked at his lips which were swollen and glossy from kissing.

“I like you so so much Y/n”, His cheeks bunched up and his eyes crinkle at the corners from smiling so happily.

You kissed the dimple that appeared on his right cheek and grinned at him.

“I like you a lot, too pretty boy.”

“oh no i’m running late for my next class.” you waved at him, “i’ll see you at lunch!”

sunghoon’s eyes followed your figure as you pushed past the people crowding at the entrance of the classroom and dashed off. his eyes glazed over in thought as he contemplated about why you even put up with him everyday, afterall you were a really jolly person who’s loved by everyone. and he, he was just loner with no emotions everso.

you both had met each other at the beginning of high school. you had approached him when you found him sitting alone at lunch on the first day. you mistook it for him being lonely but he pushed himself away from everyone on purpose. since then you’ve always been around him, constantly playing the part of a friend he didn’t ask for but secretly appreciated. he still remembers how upset you were when you found out he started skipping lunch in senior year, so you started making lunch for him everyday.

he sighed once again when his phone’s screen lit up with your text message.

y/n:

hiii

i’m so sorry i won’t be able to visit you during lunch today TT

i have the club meeting for robotics

enjoy your lunch<333

and don’t forget to recycle your lunchbox!!

his lips turned up slightly at the cheery tone of your text, brightening his mood a bit.

Sleepy Smiles

the rain poured harshly, drops the size of coins pelting down mercilessly on anyone who dared to be outside.

you couldn’t see a thing outside of your apartment’s window, the thick blanket of rain not even letting the orange glow from the street lamps diffuse through. humming to yourself, you turned back towards the stove where your ramen had been boiling. smacking your lips in glee, you hovered over the metal pot and watched as your noodles boiled in the thick, bubbly broth.

at the sound of the doorbell, you turned the stovetop to the lowest setting. wiping your hands on your pants, you made your way towards the main door.

upon opening the door, you were met with the sight of your drenched and shivering boyfriend looking at you with droopy eyes. you gasped at his miserable condition and ushered him inside.

“soobin it’s raining so heavily today, you didn’t even tell me you were coming over!” you fussed and sat him down in a big and cushy armchair, “i would’ve picked you up or brought an umbrella to the bus stop.”

“i didn’t want to cause you any trouble”, soobin murmured softly. “and i really need you right now.”

you sighed in concern and gently pushed his wet bangs away from his face. planting a small kiss on his forehead, you cupped his face and smiled at him.

“your needs will never trouble me binnie, i’m always here for you.”

he gave a small smile in appreciation and whispered a ‘thank you’.

you pulled away and started walking towards the kitchen. “go take a shower and freshen up.” pouting at the overcooked noodles you turned the gas off and looked at soobin, “i’ll put out your clothes for you and make you some ramen.”

he only blankly stared at the wall in front of him.

“soobin?”

your voice brought him out of his thoughts and he slowly stood up, “yeah i-i’ll go do that.”

you watched him worriedly as he sluggishly walked towards the bathroom. he seemed so out of it today. you hadn’t seen him so worn out and dejected in a long time. frowning, you started on another fresh batch of ramen for him.

Sleepy Smiles

you were looking through your cupboard for clothes soobin had left from his previous visits when you stopped at the sound of soft sobs coming from the bathroom. as much as you wanted to knock on the door and ask him what was wrong, you decided on giving him privacy. placing his clothes and a towel on the bed, you silently walked away to the kitchen to serve the food.

you had only just finished garnishing the noodles when the soft pattering of feet made you turn around. “take a seat love, i’ve already put your clothes in the washing machine.”

soobin nodded and pulled a chair to sit down. his face lit up when you placed a steaming, hot bowl of ramen right in front of him. he immediately thanked you and dug into the food, making you smile.

a comfortable silence hung between you both, save for the occasional slurping. once you both were done, you picked up the dirty dishes and filled them up with water to be washed later. wiping your hands on a towel you turned back towards soobin.

“so, what do you wanna do now?”

the only response you got was a shrug of his shoulders so you suggested watching a movie since he seemed too tired to do anything else, to which he agreed.

grabbing the neatly folded blankets kept on the sofa, soobin wrapped the both of you in it and shuffled closer to you. you were only twenty minutes through the movie when soobin spoke up.

“i suddenly feel so sleepy.” he rubbed his eyes, “i can barely keep my eyes open.”

you turned to face him and frowned in concern, “you must be exhausted.”

“am i?”, he hummed and fiddled with a loose thread protruding from the blanket.

you smiled and grabbed his hand, “you should lie down and get some sleep.”

he grinned and immediately lay down, his head finding place on your lap. “is this okay?”

you giggled and shifted so you both were in a comfortable position. carding your fingers through his damp hair, you admired his handsome face. the colourful lights from the television danced across his smooth skin, highlighting his features. you couldn’t resist placing a kiss on his forehead which caused his eyes to slowly flutter open.

“oh no, did i wake you up?” you brought a hand to your mouth, “i’m so sorry binnie, go back to sleep.”

he only smiled sleepily at your words and clasped your raised hand, “give me another one.”

you rolled your eyes but complied anyway. at his continuous demands, you peppered soft kisses all over his face; his nose, cheeks(dimples!), eyes and finally a longer one on his lips.

pulling away you tried to look at everything but his eyes, no matter how long you both had been together, he would always make you nervous after intimate moments like this. to make matters worse, you were left a blushing mess at his next words.

“i love you so much.”

finally looking into his eyes that were gazing right back at you, you repeated his words back with a shy smile.

he gave you an adorable smile, his eyes turning into crescents. “i knew i made the right decision by coming over, you’re really my comfort person.”

taking a deep breath, he continued, “i had a horrible day today, i felt like everyone was mad at me because i kept messing everything up.” his smile turned into a sad pout as he recollected the day’s memories.

“i swear, it was like the universe had some sort of grudge against me today.” he winced, “you could literally make an ‘embarrassing fails’ compilation out of today’s events and it would go viral.”

you gave him a sympathetic smile, “i’m sorry you had to go through that, don’t worry about it though everyone has their bad days. it won’t get any worse after today.”

“i really hope so.”

after a moment of looking at you with fond eyes, he broke the silence, “you really brightened up my mood.” he interlocked his fingers with yours, “i love living such simple and comfortable moments with you, you’re the best.”

you beamed at his words, “me too bin, you’re my comfort person as well.” you were glad that you were able to make him forget about his unfortunate day, he seemed more like himself now.

you were broken out of your thoughts when soobin flashed you a cheeky grin.

“how about you give me another kiss, just to ensure i have a good day tomorrow?”

you love the ocean more than anything else in this big, wide world. you treasure the crisp air and the salty, but comforting scent of the atmosphere, the way the rays of the sun would bounce off of the rushing waves and onto your skin fills your heart with an uncontained warmth, and the sunset reflected on the surface brings you a sense of serenity. you have loved the ocean since you were little—growing up on the coast, the sea was basically your backyard.

your mother had nicknamed you “droplet” from the way you would always run into the house dripping with ocean water, spending most of your days out at sea swimming—your favorite thing to do was pretend to be a pretty mermaid, chosen to protect the reef from any bad guys nearby. the ocean is your home, your sanctuary… where you belong.

ever since you moved towards the inner, bustling part of your town, you have made it your mission to visit the beach every few days if you can, whether it be to stay for three minutes or three hours. so here you are, stepping onto the sand with bare feet in a secluded area of the beach, jacket discarded on some random rock, notebook and pen in hand. you prefer writing your lyrics out here; the sounds of small waves hitting the shore and the occasional squawk of a passing seagull always seem to calm you, letting you release any tension in your muscles. you have been overworking yourself lately, staying up all night to produce and write songs, barely having any time to yourself to just be.

you settle down into the sand, resting your back against a washed-up long, and from there, you let your pen do all of the work. the air is a bit harsher than usual, the breeze whipping around you, knocking the bottom of your dress up slightly with the movement. you cross your legs, digging your toes into the sand as you look up at the sky—it’s a dull gray filled with heavy clouds making their move toward your small town.

a faint frown makes its way onto your face; a summer storm must be coming soon. the clouds are still a ways away though, so you bask in the small time you have left to relax, writing down a few more lyrics as you listen to the quiet song of the sea.

words flow easily onto the page as you let your train of thought take the reigns, a familiar serenity washing over you. the wind, although slightly aggressive, feels nice on your skin—it’s a little clammy outside, the humidity of summer lingering in the atmosphere. everything is hushed, peaceful, and you think you can fall asleep right here on the shore.

the calmness in your body only lasts for so long—your body snaps to alert as a loud, echoing shriek interrupts the quiet. you tuck your legs into your chest as your eyes scan the beach, but nothing seems out of the ordinary, save for a forgotten towel a little further down the shore and the heavy clouds above you.

you squint a bit as you look out onto the water and a beat later, you notice a head peek out from under the deep blue surface. it’s not alarming in the slightest, though—divers do frequent this area during this time of year. brushing it off, you let your body relax as you settle back against the log, watching the diver go back under the water.

for a while, things go back to the way they were, your pen writing down as many lyrics as possible, tapping your foot in the sand as you hum a quiet tune to yourself. figuring out melodies has to be your favorite part of songwriting—hearing the words on your page come to fruition is a beyond-satisfying feeling. it isn’t until a few minutes later that your groove is heckled once again, that same shriek you heard before ringing through your ears.

your eyes immediately find their way to the water, your heart nearly stopping in your chest as you lock gazes with the same head you saw a moment ago.

you’re quick to realize that whatever you’re seeing isn’t a diver. the man, or rather… creature has emerald green eyes, almost glowing as they glare from above the water, its dark hair wet and pressed down against their forehead. something akin to white, fish-like scales line the side of its face, flashy and sparkling. you can’t see the rest of the face due to the waves, but the head goes back under before you can fully process what you just saw.

you’re frozen still—those unnaturally green eyes send a chill down your spine. there’s no way that was just a diver, or a passing fish. whatever it was, it freaks you the fuck out. maybe you’re just imagining things. you’ve been running on less than three hours of sleep a day, staying up late to write and produce. you have over 20 commissions to complete in the next two months, so to say you’ve been neglecting your health would be an understatement. thinking of the fact, you decide it’s best to head home early; not only to avoid the soon-to-come storm but also to possibly squeeze in a quick power nap before the all-nighter you’re about to pull.

shooting a quick text to taehyun about how you’re so looped out, you’re starting to hallucinate (and receiving a lengthy scolding of a text back), you make your way home—and you don’t let yourself look back onto the water after a third noise sounds from behind you. must be a dolphin mating call.

or something like that.

Like The Moon Huening Kai

the clouds have parted for the sun the next day you make it onto the beach. the wind is still persistent, but it’s not as bad as the day before, so you simply zip your jacket up to your neck as you walk through the sand. you didn’t bring your lyric book today—partially because taehyun had chastised you over the phone about your workaholic tendencies—but you really just wanted to relax. there’s a slight crook in your neck from the awful sleep you had last night, your eyelids heavy and your movements nearly sluggish. this lack of sleep has really been doing a number on you, but you know the sound of the ocean waves can help you de-stress, even just a little bit.

as you make your way to your usual spot against that big, washed-up log, you notice things sparkling in the sand right where you normally sit. you tilt your head in confusion, making your way over with a little more ferver in your step.

a small circle of pretty shells rests in your secluded spot, sparkling as the sun hits their smooth surface. they twinkle like stars in the sky and you can’t help but gasp at how beautiful they are, luminescent and bright. in the center of the circle sits a small, rusted gold necklace with an attached hand-carved pendant—the symbol is a crescent moon with faint initials at the bottom that you can’t quite read. you look around to see if anyone is around to claim the necklace, frowning a bit at the deserted beach. someone must’ve forgotten their things.

you take a closerlook at the beautiful array, running your fingers over the awe-worthy shells—and one, in particular, catches your eye. it’s a pristine white, so rich you’d think it were manmade. it glimmers as you gently pick it up, holding it up to the sunlight. the color reminds you of those scales you had seen above the water the last time you were here.

it’s odd—whatever you imagined seemed so vivid and true. you can still physically feel the intensity of those green eyes, sharp and prying from where they watched you over the colliding waves. the sight had been so jarring that when you closed your eyes to rest that night, a pair of verdant ones glared back at you in the darkness. you don’t get enough sleep as it is, but you were barely able to get a wink of it with that image in your head.

you take a good look at the shell one last time, declaring it too beautiful to leave here all alone on the deserted beach—you slip it into your tote bag before taking a seat a few feet away from the necklace, just in case anyone comes back to retrieve it. the waves are gentle as they crash onto the shore, leaving seaweed, pebbles, and little crusteaceans in its wake. the sound is lulling as you settle your back against a nearby rock, letting your eyes slip shut to bask in the peaceful bliss.

you may have underestimated just how tired you really are, because as you blink your eyes open with a tiny yawn, you realize you had fallen asleep. the hidden gleam of the sun has moved towards west and you aren’t sure how long you’ve been here, but the uncomfortable pain in your lower back from the sharp rock behind you is telling enough.

it isn’t until you hear a small, surprised noise next to you that you actually will your brain to wake up. the scream you let out at the sight of a man crouched down next to you is absolutely embarrassing—especially with the way he simply fliches back a bit, his eyes widening at the sudden noise.

his eyes.

they’re a shockingly vivid green, round and dilated as he blinks owlishly at you.

they look incredibly familiar.

he seems to be just as startled as you are, and as your vision focuses a bit more, you notice the pearly white scales that sit on his face, glistening in the sunlight. tiny, pointy fangs peak out from his slightly ajar mouth, his black hair fluffed up and sun dried as it falls in waves on his forehead, framing his face prettily.

he’s very pretty.

but holy shit—you gasp as he blinks at you again, finally remembering where you’ve seen those eyes from.

well, this is great. you are so sleep-deprived that your imagination has now festered into some sick lucid dream.

wake up, y/n!

the man—the thing—seems to sense your disarray, a quiet noise sounding from the back of his throat as he reaches out to you with furrowed brows. you jump, moving back from the sudden movement, eyeing the fangs that rest on his bottom lip.

oh god, this dream feels all too realistic and now you’re about to get eaten by some sexy monster man! this is why it’s important to have a consistent sleeping schedule, y/n!

you can hear your heartbeat in your ears as he stands to move in front of you—from this angle, you can get a good look at his figure. he’s incredibly tall, with long legs that go on for miles. his frame is covered by a tatted black and white sweater that just barely hangs onto his shoulder and a satchel across his frame, his upper body completely exposed to the slightly chilling air. he wears loose white shorts that reach just above his knees, littered with holes and tears—as if they had been washed onto sea after a treacherous journey across the ocean. that gold necklace from before rests in his hands, the chain dangling down and clinking softly in the wind. it must be his, you register. you open you mouth to defend yourself as not-a-theif—but you’re quickly cut off.

he doesn’t speak other than to hold out the necklace to you with a small and insistent noise, his green eyes flitting quickly between yours. the pounding in your chest is incredibly persistent, every single bone inside of your body urging you to not take it—but your hand seems to have a mind of its own, reaching up to grasp the damp gold, your fingers shaking as they brush over the green-eyed man’s.

you can see the way his eyes glimmer as you warily hold the necklace against your chest, your breath stuck in your throat as he digs around in his satchel again. there’s no way you aren’t dreaming, everything seeming like a haze around you as you inspect the scattered white scales on his cheekbones, eyeing the fangs that slightly peek out from his mouth which leave shallow indents on his bottom lip.

his head turns towards you again and you feel your neck heat up from being caught staring, your gaze shooting down to your lap. you squeeze your eyes shut, willing yourself to wake up from this lucid dream, ignoring the way you can hear the man so clearly shuffling around in front of you.

you’re lucid dreaming, y/n. you really shouldn’t have eaten right before bed! wake up, wake up, wake up.

you count to ten in your head before you open your eyes again, flinching back as you find emerald green staring directly into yours. he’s kneeled down in front of you now, one of his hands in the sand next to your foot, his head cocked curiously as he scans your face—his thick, black hair falls into his eyes messily and up close, you notice the tiny beauty marks littered across his face and neck, the way his lips are bitten red, and the steady rise and fall of his chest.

so you aren’t dreaming? then that means…

the man is cautious as he raises a hand to his chest, pressing over his heart before he bows to you. your mouth is dry—what the hell is going on?

you have no time to think before he lifts his head again, gazing up at you through his impossibly long eyelashes, the tiniest shadow of a smile slipping onto his lips.

“i am kai.”

his voice is clumsy and horse, almost as if he doesn’t use it much, and a heavy, unknown accent paints his words as he speaks. the white scales on his face gleam in the sunlight and you find yourself slightly intrigued, wanting to reach up and feel them, but stopping yourself from doing so.

the man… or rather, the creature seems gentle enough—if he had planned on biting your head off, he surely would’ve done it by now. you let your guard lower as you sit up a bit, the necklace still clutched tightly between your fingers.

“my name is y/n,” you respond quietly—and the way his face lights up is absolutely blinding, a broad gleam taking over his initially shy smile, his scales twitching in an almost cute way. you watch as his hand drops from his chest, moving into your space to cup the side of your face. your body immediately tenses at the unexpected touch, a noise of surprise leaving your lips.

he leans forward as if to kiss you and a surge of panic courses through your body, cringing away from his hold—but he does no such thing. instead, he rests his forehead against yours, mumbling something in an unrecognizable language as his eyes flutter shut. you’re frozen in slight shock, but the lack of fear in your body confuses you to no end. you should be trying to run away from this strange creature, but instead, you feel… relaxed. a calm washes over you as his skin touches yours, feeling yourself be lulled by the quiet words he speaks to you.

when he pulls away, the grin is still on his face, running his finger down your cheek before moving out of your space. you try not to acknowledge the slight emptiness that fills your chest at the loss of touch, a faint and warm trail lingering from where is finger had traced.

“you took… you took one of m-my shells,” kai speaks with an eager bounce in his tone, gesturing toward your tote where that glimmering white shell still remains. your eyes follow his hand, quickly reaching for your bag to pry it open and search for the shell.

“oh, i’m sorry! i didn’t know it had an… owner…” you trail off as his eyebrows furrow, his lips twitching downwards as you grab the shell out of your bag. “you can have it back if you want…?”

the creature’s eyes comically widen, shaking his head at your words. he pushes your hand back towards you, a small whine emitting from his throat.

“gift,” he states firmly, nodding towards the shell. you look down at the shell quizzically, everything slowly piecing together in your head bit by bit.

“you… did you leave all of those shells for… me?”

the bright smile quickly returns to the creature’s face as he nods fervently, his scales rippling in excitement. while you finally got answers to the weird phenomenon, you’re still full of bewilderment—what is this creature and why is he giving these gifts to you out of all people? it simply makes no sense.

“for you,” kai confirms, leaning into your space again now that you seem to understand. you catch the way his verdant eyes flicker with an emotion you can’t quite read.

offering him a genial smile, you gently place the shell back in your bag. “thank you… but… why?”

the creature cocks his head, confusion overtaking his charming features at your question. he turns his head to glance back at the water before meeting your gaze again, pointing in that direction.

you blink at him a few times, trying to understand what he’s referring to, but nothing comes to mind. seeming to sense your puzzled state, kai reaches into his satchel again—his eyebrows are furrowed with concentration as things clink and clang around in the bag. all you can do is sit and watch as he hums with contentment, pulling out a tiny metal ring before setting it in the sand before you.

you gape at the object, glancing down at the ring and back up to his eyes a few times—because if this is what you think is happening… and if this isn’t a dream… then you’re definitely hallucinating. you aren’t ready to get married! especially not to some strange being who clearly doesn’t know the concept of personal space.

“what is… what is this?” you ask quietly, your voice wavering slightly. kai smiles at you, nodding towards the ring gently.

“for the humans to know y-you are my mate, y/n.”

you blink at him, feeling your breath catch in your throat.

his what?

“i’m sorry… i’m not your… uh, mate. i—i think you’ve gotten me confused with someone else…” you begin slowly as you move to stand and get the fuck out of here; something you should’ve done when he first approached you. kai is quick to shake his head, his vibrant eyes dulling with something melancholic and heavy, reaching out to grab onto your bag so you can’t go.

“i am not confused. you are my mate,” kai speaks desperately, still kneeling down with the ring now slightly buried in the sand. you don’t know what type of creature he is, or what is even going on, but you are certain this doesn’t have anything to do with you.

you’re a human and he’s a… whatever he is. there’s no such thing as mates. he’s surely one hell of a hallucination. next time, you’ll actually listen to taehyun’s lecture about the side effects of sleep deprivation and too much caffeine intake.

“this is… this is crazy. i have to go,” you respond sharply, ripping your gaze away from his distraught eyes—something in your heart pangs deeply at the pure sadness on his beautiful face, your gut twisting with something sticky and vile.

kai’s fingers hesitantly let go of your bag with a quiet, pained noise, shrinking in on himself as you give him one last glance before quickly heading towards your car.

when you take a glimpse back to the shore as you begin to pull off, the man is nowhere to be seen—except for a slight glimmer of a white scale disappearing beneath the tide.

Like The Moon Huening Kai

for the next few days, it rains—thick and heavy clouds cover your small seaside town, drenching every bit it can reach. the beach is closed off due to high tides, the waves all too harsh and cutting to be safe for visitors. being cooped up in your apartment is starting to drive you crazy—you already miss the salty smell of the water, the softness of the sand between your fingers…

and the calming touch of the strange creature you encountered.

it’s something horrible in the way that this… thing has been overtaking your mind, tainting your mind with emerald green every passing second. every time you sit down to write a new song, your pen develops a mind of its own; going on about the ocean’s waves, and glittering white scales, and vibrant eyes. it’s like a curse, the way you can only think about kai and nothing else.

after ruminating in your thoughts as the rain continues to nearly flood your town, you’ve come to the conclusion that kai wasn’t a hallucination. that shiny white shell sits nicely on your dresser, right next to the gold necklace you had been so selflessly gifted.

you try not to let the guilt eat away at you—the creature had been nothing but kind to you, but the uncertainty is too much. what, with the talk about mates, the gifts, and that eerie calmness that overtook your body as he whispered those foreign words to you… it sounds like something straight out of a fairytale.

it’s late when you settle into bed, your laptop resting in your lap as your phone sits on speaker next to you—they say curiosity killed the cat, but you need answers. sleep be damned.

“so what you’re telling me is that a strange, sexy man with scales on his face gifted you random shells and an old ass necklace before claiming you to be his mate?” taehyun recaps through the phone, voice coated in monotone incredulity. it sounds absolutely ridiculous when he puts it that way, but you’re having a hard time believing it even happened yourself, so you can’t blame him.

“i said a strange, sexy creature, not man.”

the line is silent for a second.

“y/n… i know you’ve been stressed lately, but don’t you think it’s time to bring these delusions to a licensed professional—”

“taehyun, this isn’t a delusion! it actually happened!” you huff out, resisting the urge to roll your eyes. you try to put yourself in his shoes—if your friend told you they’ve been approached by a majestic creature, you’d also recommend them to get help—but you know what you saw. what you felt.

“that’s exactly how delusions work, sweetheart. we may think things are real, but—”

“hold on, shut up. listen to this,” you click on a link to a news page set in your town, the article dated back to 2007. “two foreign aquatic creatures were spotted near the shore on june 6th, at approximately 3 pm. they are described to be humanoid beings, with scaly, fish-like features.”

“y/n, that’s literally like every fish ever.”

“since when were goldfish considered to be ‘humanoid-beings’,” you quip, actually rolling your eyes this time before you zoom in on the blurry pictures provided on the site. It’s hard to make out in the 480p photo taken from a distance, but there seems to be two people, a male and a female, washed up on shore. they have long, shiny fish-tails that glisten in the way the scales on kai’s face did, their torsos completely human save for the gills on the sides of their neck.

it’s all too jarring, all too real—and in your mind, right then, it clicks.

“please don’t tell me you think—”

“i think he’s a mermaid, taehyun.”

back when you were young, still the little “droplet” everyone knew, your grandmother would tell you and the other kids in your town stories about how she once fell in love with a mermaid when she was young. they’d met on the same beach you frequent and pursued their love in hiding. she’d go on and on about how he was the most beautiful person, or rather, creature she had ever laid her eyes on. how he was gorgeous and alluring—and the way his green scales sparkled in the sunlight.

you seemed to be the only one to ever believe her stories, even in the slightest. you already loved the sea, and the prospect of mermaids, real-life mermaids, inhabiting the waters you adored so much intrigued you to no end. you would stay at the shore with your grandmother after all the other kids had gone home for dinner, begging her to tell you more stories about this mysterious mermaid who held her heart.

she had said mermaids were forbidden to interact with humans, let alone be with one—but the two of them didn’t care. they had believed their love was too strong for even the wind and sea to tear apart. she spoke of how after the fishing industry became prevalent in their town, she had begun to see him less and less, until one day, he had stopped showing up at all—thus being the dull end of their story.

thinking back on her words now as you stare at the pixelated photo, things slowly begin to come together in your brain. he’s a mermaid. he has to be. there’s no other explanation.

“you’re still stuck on that? you know your grandma once told me a watermelon would grow in my stomach if i ate the seeds? i was scared for years, y/n. years! i don’t know if she’s the most reliable source—”

“this is the only thing that makes sense though,” you mumble as a pair of bright green eyes fill your thoughts.

it’s like something is calling you from deep inside your soul, something anguished and distressed—and it’s calling you back to that beach. you know answers are there. even if this all turns out to be some weird, ongoing delusion, you need to find out the truth—for your own peace of mind. (and maybe taehyun’s as well, seeing as he’s still rambling on about his fear of being pregnant with a watermelon.)

and in all truthfulness, you want to… need to see those eyes one more time.

Like The Moon Huening Kai

it’s a horrible idea. actually, it’s in your top 10 most stupid y/n moments.

sneaking onto the shore is easy enough. there’s no lifeguards on watch, or any lingering public safety employees as you step onto the sand. only a sliver of it is visible—even your usual spot is covered with water as the waves crash against the shore with untainted vigor. the rain is heavy, grimly pouring from the sky in buckets. your jacket isn’t doing enough to block it from seeping through the fabric, making your clothes cling to your skin uncomfortably.

honestly, you pitched yourself to be smarter than this–-everything in your body, ever nerve and muscle screams at you to run around and go home. there’s no point in trying to prove something that simply doesn’t exist. they say the human body can only run on so much sleep before you start to feel out of character; and you already feel like you’re outside of your body.

it’s like you’re in a trance, under a spell as your feet keep on walking, your vision completely focused in the darkness of the night as you scan the water for anything. it feels like something inside of your body is calling for someone, the feeling profound and wretched to the point where it makes your heart heavy and raw.

that feeling tugs you like a magnet, past the public part of the beach and to a more vacant, woodsy area where trees and bushes reside, the branches hanging over and dipping into the water, leaves being whipped up by the unforgiving breeze. you’re close—you can feel it, deep inside your soul.

the waves are unrelenting as they tumble over eachother, some shallow ones hitting your ankles and splashing up your legs—and you’re too out of it, too entranced by whatever song is singing inside of your chest to watch where you’re going.

you trip over a rock hidden in the sand, falling over yourself as your already drenched form becomes soaked with ocean water, the harsh waves tumbling over you as you try to sit up. you’ve always been a great swimmer, phenomenal even, but the storm has turned the ocean into something wicked and unlawful, pulling you further and further into the water the more you struggle against it.

you’re tugged into the rip before your brain can process it, having only half the mind to call out for help—but it’s not use. the waves are too loud and the pouring rain drowns out any and every noise in the breeze. it’s too dark to see anything and you can already feel yourself tiring out as you fight to stay afloat.

the ice cold water does wonders to sober you up from whatever hypnosis you were under and now that your mind is clear, true panic and terror sets deep into your chilled bones. you’re going to die out here, in the hands of something you have loved since you were a child. things really do come full circle, don’t they?

the full moon resting in the condensed sky is the last thing you see before you completely black out.

you feel it before you even open your eyes. a heavy, burning hand on your back and a heated finger trailing down the slope of your nose. your entire body is warm from head to toe, your cheek cushioned by a soft, cotton-like material. a captivating voice sings a gentle song in words you can’t understand, the volume just under the perpetrator’s breath—the sound is almost completely muted out by the roaring sea outside.

the roaring sea.

you inhale deeply as if you’re searching for air that’s nowhere to be found, sitting up quickly with labored breaths. your eyes automatically lock onto a figure—an all too familiar figure with worried green eyes and luminous scales and soaking wet hair that drips water onto the sand.

kai.

you fling yourself into his arms despite both of your wet clothes. his touch is grounding and comforting as you bury yourself into the crook of his neck, holding onto him tightly. he doesn’t speak as his arms hesitantly wrap around your torso, his hands smoothing down your back in silent consolation. only then do you register the thick sweater that is strewn across your shoulders—it’s the same one he had on that first day you met.

the thought makes your eyes brim with slight guilt. he has just saved your life, even after you so rudely ran away from him. you want to apologize, but nothing comes out as you finally break away from the embrace. he won’t meet your eyes, and that fact alone makes your heart wrench.

“how did you… how did you know i…?” the words are stuck in your throat as you gape at him, trying to not let your eyes wander down his exposed clavacle where a few more shiny scales reside. kai’s pretty, pretty emeralds are sad—the kind of sad that radiates off a person and spreads to everyone nearby. your gut clenches. he’s quiet for a few beats before his hand moves to his chest.

“i… i can feel it. your fear,” he whispers, his hand resting over his heart as a visual communicator. you don’t know what to say, any words that come to mind die on your tongue just as quickly as they appear. your silence is incredibly loud as kai’s bottom lip trembles, hastily standing to his feet. your eyes follow him as he take a couple steps back, creating distance between the two of you. your body immediately goes cold, feeling a harsh shiver run up your spine, wracking your entire body.

“i am sorry,” kai mumbles solemnly, looking down at the sand below him, his hands folded tightly in front of his body. you’re still shivering despite the sweater draped across your shoulders, staring up at him as you wrap your arms around your body.

“why… why are you sorry?” you inquire, feeling your heart pang at the whine that leaves his throat. he won’t meet your eyes and you already find yourself craving to see those vibrant irises again.

“you r-rejected me as your mate. i must leave you alone now,” kai nearly whispers as he strictly keeps his eyes trained in the sand. he should be cold in his sopping clothes—this heavy wind and pouring rain outside of the small cove is enough to freeze just about anyone—but he seems completely apathetic to the weather.

an ugly, weighted emotion rips through you at his words, mentally cursing your past self for being so rash about it all. you don’t know the implications of “rejecting” a mate, but with the way kai is weary of stepping any closer to you, you’re sure you’ve done enough damage to last a lifetime.

“kai—i’m sorry about what i said. i’m still confused, but…” you inhale deeply, watching the way his scales sparkle with the reflection of the moonlight on the water. he’s truly gorgeous. “i’m willing to listen if you want to teach me. about what all of this means… about yourself.”

you can physically see the way kai’s breath hitches, his body tensing up as he just barely lifts his head, emerald green peeking through his dark shaggy hair. kai’s eyes meet yours and you feel something akin to relief wash over you. he seems to be waiting for something as his eyes glimmer with hope and hesitancy, so you give him an affable smile, warm and inviting, before patting the spot in front of you.

kai’s scales ripple as his weary demeanor softens, quickly moving to take a seat in the sand. he mirrors your position, pulling his legs up to his chest, your feet almost touching from how close he is to you. your heart stutters a bit as he watches you, his gaze filled with so much infatuation and mesmerization, it fills your stomach with knots.

“what would you like to know, y/n?”

the way your name rolls off of his lips, sounding oh, so elegant coated in his unnamed accent makes your head spin. his moles are placed perfectly on his unblemished skin like stars at night, his eyes shining like the moon herself.

“i want to know what you are,” you start, speaking quietly so that only he can hear your words. kai smiles at you, his pearly fangs showing themselves once again. they aren’t so scary now—not with the way his hands are so delicate as they mindlessly draw shapes in the sand or the way his scales ripple once again as enthusiasm overtakes his body.

“i am a mermaid. the sea is my home.”

the words would have surprised you, had he told you the very first time you two met, but now they simply settle the uneasiness in the pit of your gut. it all makes sense now. the scales, the eyes, the shells, and his fantasy-esque features… he’s a mermaid.

you inhale deeply to collect your thoughts—the fact that this is all real is too much to take in at once. you look down at your own feet buried in the sand, shivering again at a harsh gust of wind. your heart rate picks up as kai lets out a soft sound, reaching up to adjust the sweater around your shoulders, running his hand down your arm before retracting. the touch that lingers in his fingers’ wake is incredibly warm, feeling it spread throughout your entire body. you want to feel it again.

“i… i thought mermaids aren’t supposed to be seen by humans,” you nearly question as you find his eyes. something sharp flashes through them, as stormy as the night sky above, and you feel your breath catch in your throat.

kai glances away as he thinks for a moment, his pupils shaky as the words strike him. he’s tensed up again and you begin to think you’ve said the wrong thing.

“you don’t have to tell me, kai. i’m just… i’m just glad you’re here with me right now.” your voice is incredibly gentle as you coax him to look at you again, watching the way his shoulders slowly relax at your tone. he doesn’t look at you, though—his eyes stay trained on a random rock, his fingers twitching from where they sit in the sand. he’s quiet for a bit as you two sit in a light silence, the sound of the fierce rain and the rough waves outside filling in the space around you.

it isn’t until he takes a deep breath, those emeralds on his face absolutely glimmering when they meet your eyes. there’s no smile on his face, but his eyebrows are slightly furrowed and his eyes are so incredibly sincere, you feel it pierce through your heart like a sword on fire.

“you are my mate, y/n. i will do anything for you,” kai speaks, closing his eyes for a second. “even if i had to betray m-my coven to find you… my life is for you. nothing else matters.”

his words invoke a deep stirring inside of you—the urge to reach out and caress his face, to hold onto his hand, to feel his skin—it’s untameable. it’s as if a flame is ignited inside of you as he opens his eyes, hearing your heartbeat pound incessantly in your ears, watching the way his scales flicker as they reflect the moonlight. his eyes are entirely dilated as he scans your face, the vibrant green of his irises overtaken by his dark pupils—you feel completely bare despite being fully clothed, vulnerable like a butterfly pinned to a board.

it’s only then does he move, untucking his legs to kneel on one before you—almost an exact replica of the way he had bowed to you the first time you met. he reaches his hand out to you and without a second thought, you take it, letting him pull you both to stand. his fingers are ice cold, but a warmth spreads throughout your body like wildfire, a soft gasp leaving your lips as he tugs you closer. he lifts his other hand to rest on your cheek, his eyes flitting in between yours.

when he leans in again, you’re ready, your eyes slipping shut as he presses his forehead to yours. you can feel his breath on your lips, the sensation sending tingles down your spine. he’s silent for a moment before he whispers something in that enchanting language of his—even though you can’t understand what he’s saying, his timbre is like a lullaby, filling your head with cotton and stardust.

“i… do you feel it?” kai whispers as his nimble fingers stroke your cheek gently.

he doesn’t elaborate—he doesn’t need to, because you do. you feel the way his touch leaves a burning trail against your skin, the way his eyes pull you in like quicksand, entrancing and bewitching, and the way his voice sounds like music to your ears. you feel it all, and you’re nodding in response before you even realize it, registering the way his hand grips onto yours tighter, his breathing picking up ever so slightly.

“it does not matter if you are human, y/n. our souls are connected… and mine has not stopped searching for yours.”

you’ve always wondered why you resonated so much with the ocean. sand is a pain to clean out of shoes, the waves can be terribly unforgiving, and the tide even stole your favorite pen once. but nothing can deter the pull you feel toward the sea—or more so, towards what resides in the sea.

your mate.

you don’t have to say anything for kai to know you finally understand, blinking your eyes open as he lifts his head. his eyes are practically glowing as they lock onto yours, his fangs peeking out as he smiles at you, his scales rippling and fluttering animatedly.

“you are so beautiful,” he speaks through his small gleam. it’s such a cliche, but the way he says it holds so much weight, it squeezes your heart painfully. he says it like you’re a breath of fresh air, as if you’re the most captivating thing he’s ever had the pleasure of seeing with his own eyes.

the heat that crawls up your chest blooms throughout your entire body, wrapping your heart in a cozy blanket as his fingers trail down from your cheek to your jaw, tilting your head up ever so slightly. you don’t move away—and in all honesty, you have no desire to. he’s gentle in the way his hand lets go of yours, finger by finger, before moving to find a home on the small of your back.

you’re not shivering anymore. his touch is incredibly searing, yet impossibly calming, feeling your mind go dizzy as his eyes search yours for something you aren’t quite saying. it’s almost nerve-wracking, how the suspense builds up in your chest as those emeralds flicker down to your lips, feeling your body grow hot all over.

“will you allow me to… to k-kiss you?” kai whispers, not even the aggressive waves outside able to drown out his voice in your ears.

there’s no doubt in your mind as a breathy “yes” slips into the air.

he’s clumsy with the way his lips find yours, your hand coming up to his chest. his heartbeat under your palm pounds at lightening speed, his body slightly trembling as your lips move against his tranquilly. there seems to be no rush, melting into his embrace with each passing moment.

the press of his fangs against your lips only slightly stings when the tips of them dig in a little too hard, and kai is quick to soothe over the pain with a swipe of his tongue. he tastes of ocean water, a bit salty, but there’s another sweet undertone as well that you can’t quite place your finger on. you don’t linger on it for too long—you don’t want to have to use your brain, so you lose yourself in the feeling of his fingers against your spine, his thumb brushing over your jaw so delicately, you almost want to cry.

his tongue prods against yours as he presses closer to you, as if close is never close enough, as if he wants to sink into your body and become one. your mind is hazy, but you feel safe as his fingers trail down to the side of your neck, leaving fluttery, ticklish sensations in the process. he explores your mouth as if you are a cavern full of gold, mindless to the way small, needy noises leave his lips. it’s overwhelming for the both of you, engulfed in this little bubble you’ve created.

when he pulls away, it’s slow and reluctant, leaning back in a few more times to get another taste of you, peppering kisses down your jaw and your neck. you can’t help but moan softly at the feeling that stirs in the pit of your gut as he nips and bites and sucks at your skin—completely enamored with you.

he places one final kiss under your ear before his emerald eyes meet yours—you preen at the way he looks at you like you’re the heart of the sea, the ocean herself. it’s too much and not enough at once as you tuck yourself into his broad chest, your heart beating in sync through your dampened clothes. it feels right. this—him. he feels right and now you’re certain he isn’t just a measly dream.

Like The Moon Huening Kai

the sky appears to be unreal, coated with lovely hues of pink and purple, a deep orange settling near the horizon as the sun lowers itself from the sky. it’s still warm out, the tide low as you tip-toe through rocks and shells, feeling your heart fill as tiny hermit crabs take cover in the sand, holding the bottom of your flowy dress up so as to carefully watch your step. the waves wash against the shore with a subdued rhythm and the sky is void of any clouds—the calm after the storm.

your breath catches in your throat as you see the man waiting for you at the end of the shore, his black hair mussed and slightly damp. it seems as if he’s been waiting for a while—he stares off at sea, sitting just a few feet from the tide as his hand mindlessly picks up sand and lets it fall through his fingers.

he’s oh, so gorgeous, even from afar. the white button-up he adorns is rolled up to his elbows, legs covered by brown pants that flow in the wind. his trusty satchel is slung across his frame, seemingly full to the brim as it rests in the sand next to him. a contemplative look resides on his face, his head slightly tilted to the side as his mind wanders. you almost feel guilty for the thought of disturbing this quiet moment.

but then you’re reminded that he’s waiting here for you—your stomach flutters as he turns his head, those vibrant eyes lightening up at the sight of your figure making its way toward him. he stands to his feet with the brightest smile on his prince-like face, his pretty fangs pressing into his bottom lip in the cute way they always do.

his scales ripple as he pulls you into the tightest hug you’ve ever experienced, a serene buzz washing over you as he safely holds you to his chest. you register the feeling of him pressing small kisses onto the crown of your head and you giggle a bit at the fluttery sensation. you tilt your head up to meet his eyes; and they never fail to make your head spin, containing so much sincerity that squeezes your heart in all of the best ways. he cups your cheeks, the warmth of his fingers spreading down your neck and blossoming in your soul.

“i missed you,” you speak softly, and you mean it—nothing, no one can compare to the way kai can make you feel so loved and wanted with a singular, simple glance. you dream about his little beauty marks, his wide smile, and those iridescent scales that sparkle when the sun hits them just right. even just a few days without being near him makes your core surge with a deep longing—and now that restless feeling finally dissipates as he leans in to kiss your nose, and then your cheek, and finally your lips.

“i have missed you more,” he mumbles against your lips, his nose brushing yours as he kisses you so delicately, attentive to every little noise that leaves your lips. his hands smooth down your sides, running his fingers over the soft fabric of your dress, coming around to press against the small of your back.

when the kiss breaks, you’re rendered breathless, blinking your eyes open to find him already watching you. the faint smile on his face widens as you reach up to carefully touch the sparkling scales on his cheekbones before running your fingers through his disheveled hair. he leans into your touch, his eyes fluttering shut with the gentle movement of your fingers.

“how long have you been waiting?” you question as you finish adjusting his hair, resting your palm against his chest. he hums in thought before he opens his eyes—and you’re in awe at the way the setting sun manages to reflect in them, looking like specks of gold against his irises.

“not long at all. i-i made something for you last evening,” he responds almost shyly. your eyes widen in surprise, watching as he takes a tiny step back to open his satchel. his cheeks are flushed a pinkish-red once he pulls out a handmade crown, woven with dried seaweed, softwood, and the prettiest, eye-catching flowers you’ve ever seen. there are even a few tiny shells tucked in here and there, and they all sparkle the same, twinkling as the sunlight hits them.

“you made this?” your voice comes out airy, in awe at not only the gift, but also the thought of him spending time handmaking something for you. kai nods timidly, looking up at you through his eyelashes. your heart threatens to explode as he gestures toward your body.

“m-may i put it on y-you?” he asks, a slight nervousness coating his voice and you’re quick to nod, bowing your head a bit to give him better access. a quiet, enthused noise escapes his lips before he can contain it, stepping close to you again. he adjusts your hair ever so slightly before situating the crown on your head. you can’t see yourself, but you’re sure it looks amazing by the way kai’s scales flutter, his gleam almost blinding as he moves back to admire his work. the crown is light and a few of the flowers tickle the side of your face. you feel beautiful.

“you know you don’t have to keep gifting me things, right?” you softly chide with a little chuckle, but kai’s bright smile falters at your words, cocking his head in confusion with a little whine.

“do you not… do you not like m-my gifts for you?” kai’s voice slightly trembles and you’re quick to backtrack, grabbing onto his hands with both of yours.

“no, no, no, kai–-i love your gifts. it’s just… isn’t the courting stage over? you know i’m yours, right?”

kai’s eyes sparkle with admiration as you speak, letting go of your hands to wrap his arms around your waist, pulling you close to his body. he’s warmer than he usually is, and you suspect it has something to do with the humid air around you—the storm has long since passed, the shore drying up quickly, leaving only fluffy sand and a quiet, sedated ocean in its wake.

it’s a reflex now, to close your eyes as he gently rests his forehead against yours, a faint, contented hum sounding from the mermaid.

“you still deserve the entire sea and all of the stars, my beautiful mate.”

it’s horrible, the way your entire body tingles, feeling your face heat up from his words. it should be sappy and sickeningly sweet, but his voice brings you nothing but peace, letting yourself melt into his embrace as he subtly sways you both to the rhythm of the waves.
