So many anime go this way especially shonen!! After 2 or so episodes it morphs back into the typical shonen formula of kill monster of the week and progress up the ranks of whatever organisation there is whether it be a guild, military or whatever. Without fail. Also the obsession with power levels in anime is strange, like i would rather you showed me how powerful your guy is rather than just screaming a percentage at me ffs. Also they love to draw out fights over multiple eps, i went back and watched demon slayer and got bored bc it took them a whole season to kill one guy. Nothing else really happened. I guess i haven’t watched anime for a long time so when i went back to it all these tropes were super jarring.

here's something I hate: when a narrative starts with a super original, interesting premise, and then completely abandons it do to do the Generic Expected stuff.

like Kaiju No. 8, it's about this guy who wanted to fight monsters accidentally becoming a monster. which, wow!!! I would watch that! but then it turns out he can regain his human body easily, and the monster body is more like a hollow sports mascot uniform he wears occasionally for Badass moments. and then the show is just him moving through the military-esque ranks of being a monster hunter, which like, the military/army/academy progression thing has been done so many times, and done better. why throw away the cool premise of 'not only will this guy never achieve his dreams, he is now the exact thing he hated' to focus on him being human doing human things, undiscovered, moisturized and thriving....
