Duchess wasn’t sure what was happening.
Duchess was -- She was just talking to Sparrow about some grievance she had, the boy providing musical commentary to every melodramatic note she made, when a sorcereress had burst onto the scene. Bolts of lights shot from her hand, their targets disintegrating upon contact.
Duchess was the first to move, dragging Sparrow by the lapel of his jacket to run away. However, Sparrow noticed the light sooner than she did. In an effort to tackle her to ground, the light hit him in the back, and all Duchess became aware of was his solid embrace quickly slipping away.
