A week later he’s up on his feet.

Stumbling, but he’s up. That’s why you insist on another week to make sure he regains his strength.

At first, he’s reluctant. His jaw clenches when you ask him. He’s tense. You can tell he’s itching to go back outside- to grab a sword, a bow, or a shield and fight something. You learned quickly that he never stays still for long. The house was just a place to rest. His real home is out there. Outside in the wild, where he feels most free.

But a pout on your face and promise of all the Fruit Pies he could ever want, and suddenly he’s back in bed as if he never even entertained the idea of leaving.

In between working out to gain his strength, he helps you and your parent’s around the house. For someone who has only spent their time sleeping under the stars, he seems to know his way around home improvement pretty well. He’s your dad’s favorite assistant when it comes to the projects that are always too messy for you to think of getting involved with (there were more than enough stories your father told about you vowing not to touch this pole and that part of the fireplace) and your Mom’s favorite helper when she wants a fresh pair of hands to help her around the kitchen (or just a taste tester who she can finally talk the ear off of).

But in the rare moments, you have him all to yourself, you ask him about where he goes when he’s not here. And when he says “Everywhere” with a smile, you plead that he just tell you where. So he starts with your neighbors directly East.

The Zora domain is beautiful. He was able to tell even when it was in its period of nothing but rain. He tells you how everywhere there’s something bright and shiny to guide your way- especially at night. He tells you of giant plagues telling an epic history of the Zora people on walls here and there and everywhere. He speaks of the beautiful waterfalls that decorate the landscape with a certain fondness and a bright twinkle in his eye. He speaks of a prince in the exact same way though he doesn’t seem to like it when you ask him to tell you about the prince again. Almost as much as he didn’t like recalling all the times he would slip and all those pairs of pants that would forever be soaked while he was visiting.

But when you finally got the chance to ask if he saw the great machine elephant you’ve only heard rumors of from Purah, he was quiet.

Because suddenly, it’s time for him to go.

You help him pack a bag for the road. Warm clothes and some food to help him last a few nights without work. Bandages for the inevitable accident that’s bound to happen now that you know him. And a long hug so he always remembers that a few people are looking out for him- wherever he may be.

He smiles as he parts from you and turns to walk off into the night when he grabs his sword. And stares. And stares, and stares, and stares, and stares, and stares, and-

“Do you think your dad could sharpen this for me?”

You tell him to sleep on that decision not because you totally don’t want him to go, but that it’s a “big deal” or whatever that was supposed to mean. He agrees with you readily, as if he thought this was a “big deal” too. It’s late morning when Link comes to your father with his request. And because he’s not just Link now, he’s family, your father does more than just sharpen a sword or two for him. No, he teaches Link how to do it himself. Both professionally, and how to do it while living off the land.

It takes a week to learn the basics. And a few more days to hone his skill. So as he worked over the red hot fires, sharpening his blades, you asked about a bow you saw he was adamant on keeping in perfect condition, despite continuous use.

“The Great Eagle Bow,” He named the weapon over his shoulder, sweat dripping down his forehead. “It belonged to a friend.”

And one thing led to another, and suddenly, he’s telling you about the village that seems to float on rocks. The laughing children who brush by his legs when he climbs the winding bridges and the wise adults who helped him find warm clothes and braid feathers into his hair. He tells you what it was like to jump off one of those tall, tall cliffs and float along with the wind. He’ll reminisce about cute songs the Rito girls used to sing, and if you ask him nicely, he’ll whistle a tune or two. He tells you that it’s not too unlike Hateno being so close to the mountains, but it’s surely colder there. The Hebra Mountains is apparently his least favorite spot to camp out, but he’s addicted to the game he’s able to catch in the frostbitten conditions. And when you’re standing behind him, feeling inspired by one of his stories, you find yourself mock shooting arrow after arrow into the neck of ferocious monsters that only exist in Link’s stories.

He never caught you in the act until the night before he’s set out to leave again. He asks how much experience you have out in the wild- defending yourself, hunting, camping, the works. It’s obvious how much he doesn’t like your sheepish shrug and shy laugh. In fact, it’s so obvious that when your mother comes to bring some more goodies for his travel bag, she asks him about the twisted-up look on his face.

Four days later, you’re deeper in the East Necluda than you’ve ever been, learning the ropes from a seasoned traveler and certified Wild Child. With your parent’s approval, of course.

In between lessons about finding firewood and which berries to eat, he tells you of the hot, dry world that is Death Mountain. While showing you how to swing your borrowed Solider’s sword, he tells you about the Gorons and their thick skin that’s impossible to break. When you complain about how walking around all day has made you feel hot and sweaty and gross, he threatens to put you in the special armor he had to buy just so he didn’t burn up. You’re in awe as he points out constellations while the two of you lay down at night. And the offhanded comment of how the stars look best when you’re in the Death Mountain hot springs didn’t go over well with you until he promised to bring you there. But what you loved to hear most of all was probably what Link loved talking about the most- the kids and all their rolling around. Hearing all the antics they would get into always made you giggle, and you supposed your laughter reminded him of them too. Why else would he look at you like that when you laughed?

You’re beyond sad when the impromptu camping trip with Link starts to wrap up. But when he tells you that he’s proud of the progress you’ve made, you can’t help but feel a little more than pleased. Unfortunately, it’s during the trip back that an accident occurs.

It happens too fast for you to get a proper grasp of what happened. One minute you’re walking along, swinging your arms and following the trail. The next minute, you’re being pushed to the ground as something explodes over top of you. When everything settles, you see a fading orange light and Link hoving over your face. The look on his face is so serious yet so natural- it’s as if he was born to protect. Born to fight.

Nothing ever comes close to harming you when that happened. You did, however, land on your wrist wrong and ended up with a small sprain that kept you out of commission for a week or two. And Link, being the good boy he always is, insists that he stays until you’re better because “who is going take care of you?”

You were far too flustered to tell him that your parents would obviously help you out. And you’re parents were a little too excited with the fast rate they were gaining a son from all of this.

In your two weeks out of commission, the two of you got closer than ever before. You showed him how to clean the house during that time. The proper way. He complains and, complains about how it’s hard to learn without you there to show him how to hold a broom, but you distract him with more questions about his adventures. And if you know one thing about Link, it’s that he loves to tell you about his travels.

And you love to see the world through his words.

He tells you stories of the Wasteland and Gerudo desert. How it’s big and vast and never-ending. How the beasts of the desert live in the sand and survive the heat as like it was nothing. How he’s visited statues that reach up to the sky and fought fierce opponents who never knew when to back down from a challenge- especially in their own home. But most of all, he spoke of how the inside of Gerudo town is nothing if not beautiful. And he takes your playful scolding of dishonoring their age-old tradition of a female-only city, he tells you that he dressed the part and promised you that it was for a good reason.

He leaves it at that because suddenly, your time with him is up again. Your wrist is almost all better, and he keeps looking out the window as if he’s needed out there. Outside of Hateno. Outside of your life.

And while you’re not ready to think about the way he leaves tonight, you still pack some Fruit Pie for the road with a smile.

The hug you share with him this time is the longest the two of you have ever shared. His warmth surrounds you, and you find it harder and harder and even dream about letting go of him. The way he rocks you back and forth, the way his hand rubs your back, the way his hair tickles your neck- it’s all too much. You’ll miss him. You know you will. All these weeks with him- falling for something that will never stay still has been torture. It’s enough to make you cry.

But his departure isn’t about you. It’s about him and wishing him the best. So when he finally pulls away, you look at him and say;

“I guess I’m not much of a secret housekeeper anymore, huh?” The smile on your face is sad, but it’s a smile nonetheless. “But with all the work I’ve been doing, I might as well move in, don’t you think?”

It’s a joke. A small one that’s supposed to do nothing but inspire a soft chuckle and to lighten the somber mood that settled between the two of you.

That’s all it is. A joke.

“Okay. How about I stay until you’re all moved in?”

Until it isn’t.

Now, it’s just another story. Another story just waiting to be told.

CAR WASH

CAR WASH

Jason Todd x Reader

Summary: You looked at the dent on the bonnet and ran your nails over it before grabbing the nozzle of the hose off the floor, preparing to start cleaning the car, “You really hit him hard babe”. “I always go in hard”, Jason smirked cheekily and slapped your ass, enjoying the little shocked gasp that left your plump lips. You turned towards him, aiming the hose, threatening him with it, “Behave!”.
