Every day I try to love hockey in peace, and then almost every day, I’m reminded that the culture around this sport is so fucking toxic it makes me want to scream

I hate to break it to the white people who are all “wow I can’t believe there’s still racism in hockey. That’s bad” in response to Akim Aliu’s Players Tribune article, but there’s visibly been racism in the NHL the entire time, you’ve just been privileged enough to not notice it

About Last Night

I am truly appalled by the comments made in a group chat by Br*ndan L*ipsic and Florida Panthers prospect J*ck R*dewald. After reading 2 screenshots, I felt sick to my stomach. After finishing reading them all, I felt demoralized.

The NHL should ban Leipsic and Rodewald from the NHL, but I’m not holding my breath because I know how this story generally ends. In high school, I was sexually harassed and stalked by a male classmate who was a star basketball player. I reported him; he got off scot-free while I suffered the consequences for speaking up. The school didn’t care that I spent countless hours hiding in the bathroom and feared for my life. All they cared about was their chances of winning basketball championships. I don’t regret speaking up and never will, but I hate that every time I see a news story like this, I feel like I’m 16 and helpless again. It feels like no matter what they do, male athletes are protected. 

I will be taking a few days off from writing to take care of my mental health. Thanks for understanding!

As a Capitals fan I hope they do something. This kind of behavior needs to have consequences.

Sports are made to learn respect, leadership, friendship, equality and have fun. And someone who disrespect women, teammates and exteamates, the person who loves and people in general like that... Are not good to represent any number, any jersey, any sport, anything.

If someone needs to talk about this, please do it. Don't think it's stupid because it's only a hockey player you follow. Those things hurt, words hurt.

Honestly, my heart goes out to anyone who has had their favorite player exposed as a terrible person. We look up to these guys, we hope that they are decent, and sometimes we are forced to realize that they really are just humans who are too capable of making shitty decisions. There is no excuse for it, but it doesn’t make the realization any less painful.

“Oh no,” your best friend, Ethan, held up a hand. “You need a night out to relax and have fun. The Flyers have you working way too hard. I was never this stressed out while working with the Phantoms.”

You wavered. “That’s true, but it’ll be awkward seeing him here.”

“Who cares? It’s not like Nolan has a monopoly on this club. You have just as much of a right to be here as he does.”

You silently cursed in your head; Ethan made a good point. “You’re right, this is silly. Let’s just get in there before I change my mind.”

You and Ethan made your way to the bar and had just received your glasses of whiskey when Carter approached. “Y/N, you’re here!” he shouted in your ear while hugging you.

“Of course I am: you guys were gone for a week and clinched a playoff spot in the process! Welcome home, by the way!”

“Thanks! Seriously though, I’m glad you came: Nolan has been insufferable, moping around like a sad puppy. I just can’t take it anymore!” Carter complained.
