when i watch old movies i’m constantly surprised by how much acting has improved. not that the acting in the classics is bad, it’s just often kind of artificial? it’s acting-y. it’s like stage acting.

it took some decades for the arts of acting and filmmaking to catch up to the potential that was in movies all along; stuff like microexpressions and silences and eyes, oh man people are SO much better at acting with their eyes than they were in the 40′s, or even the 70′s.

the performances we take for granted in adventure movies and comedies now would’ve blown the critics’ socks off in the days of ‘casablanca’.

i’m looking into it i think my attraction to andrew garfield is a mix of aesthetic and sensual. i like looking at him and i want to touch his hair.

hi, i watched and really enjoyed wandavision but i also acknowledge and speak up about the blatant whitewashing and racism in the show. is it problematic to still enjoy the show/make gifs and edits of it? i don't want to cause any harm

To be completely honest? Yes, I do think it’s “problematic.” In the past, I’ve said that you won’t directly harm Roma people by watching it, and you won’t directly aid Roma people by boycotting it, either. Right now, though, I’m not in a good mood and I don’t feel like being nice. Anon, please don’t take this as an attack on you, personally. I really do appreciate you for politely reaching out to me on this. But I gotta get real for a minute.

Let’s be very honest with each other-- WandaVision is racist. To engage with, promote, or celebrate WandaVision, is to make some sort of concession for that racism. Promoting WandaVision in any manner without clearly and verbally addressing that racism is holding space for other people to passively consume and excuse racist material. 

I can’t tell you what to do, and it would be hypocritical of me, as a Marvel blog, to ask you to boycott all problematic material, but I am begging all of you to understand that the erasure and misrepresentation of Romani have serious consequences. The way that we talk about this problem, even in pop culture, matters. This is a situation where you need to be our allies. 

I understand that it is difficult to enjoy a TV show while also being constantly and verbally anti-racist. If that is too tricky for you to keep up, maybe you should just drop the TV show. You’re not losing anything precious.

This MCU and X-Men film franchises participate directly in anti-Romani racism by erasing Roma people from real history and real parts of the world where they exist as severely marginalized communities. WandaVision itself features an entire, multigenerational family of Jewish and Romani characters who have all been whitewashed and made gentiles. It takes a character whose backstory is based on the lived experiences of poor, migrant, and marginalized Roma communities, and it warps that narrative and projects it onto their oppressors, namely white Europeans. There is no negotiating whether or not this is okay.
